Hartlepool bye election

Some papers are saying the Tories have a 17% lead with two days to go. Can that be right? We live in strange times alright.

Living here, I'm not sure it's as high as that BUT

Labour chose the wrong candidate; far too much baggage. Locally they are in absolute disarray and have had years of infighting!
Labour Left; will support the woman who should have been standing for the Northern Independent Party, which will probably take 2500 off Labour.
Renew, (Brexit Party, UKip) aren't getting the traction they had at the 2019 election for obvious reasons.
The rest aren't going to win
Conservatives are in powe nationally, have lots of money to spend in the constituencies that vote the right way (Darlington and Redcar locally doing very well). Ben Houchen, Tees Valley Mayor, has done what he said he would.

On reflection, this area started the move from Labour back in 2002, when Stuart Dummond was elected Mayor, won that 3 times so they changed the constitution to remove the position and back to Leader and Cabinet.

The fight to implement the result of the 2016 referendum just kept sticking nails into the coffin (see the first point) the fact that lots of historically voting Labour voters moved to the Brexit Party, means the next step to Conservatives is easier.

File under, not how to run a political party if you want power.

They only way the Tories could lose this election is if Boris was caught with his pants down, he wished thousands would die in the pandemic or he was caught taking a back hander from a donor for some frilly cushions.......OH!!!....... 🙄......Your right, we live in strange times alright.

There are constituencies where people just feel that the incumbent party is not listening and needs to be taught a lesson. Mark this down as one of them.

Nadine Dorries MP claims the Tories have created 180,000 well paid jobs in Hartlepool, population 92,000 - no wonder the voters have gone over to them, two jobs each eh!

In 2019 @55% of votes were for Tory or Brexit Party in Hartlepool and only @35% for Labour - as Tory and Brexit Party are more or less the same thing, it does look bleak for Labour!

IF - that says IF, they have certainly not lost yet - Labour lose a mid term by election in Hartlepool to the Conservatives then I'd suggest that they should be taking a closer look at their own actions rather than worrying about Nadine Dorries.

Sorry 2020 - updated my post since to say that 👍

No problem Bottle, I shouldn't have referred to your post, I'm amazed that it looks like the Conservatives will win - if they don't win they will get a large share of the vote - and my point is just that Labour can go on and on about what the Conservatives have or haven't done but they are clearly not performing themselves and certainly not in the eyes of the voters.

Is it all about who is the least chite ????????????????????????

People in Hartlepool aren't interested in wallpapergate and other frivolous media nonsense. They want job security, decent wages, a future for their kids and a way out of the pandemic. The leader of the Hartlepool Council (Independent) said "Boris Johnson has, bizarrely, managed to speak more to the working class and Hartlepudlian than Labour have managed to do." Having voted 70% to leave the EU, the last thing the voters there wanted was a remainer/rejoiner Labour candidate. It's like Labour have no idea in which direction they want to go.

Oh, don't get me wrong....The labour party are about as much use, as buying the pope a condom...or having an argument with 20's.
You know it's bad when a classic working class town like Hartlepool see more confidence in an old Etonian bellend than a whole political party.

Sad times, but agree the Labour party have no idea who or what they are anymore...I bet Keir Hardie must be turning in his grave.

Some really good points have been made. The Labour party have turned their back on many of their traditional voters and they now unsurprisingly are paying the price. A wonderful example of that has been given, endorsing the Eu when many traditional labour party supporters voted leave. It is this lack of understanding, this lack of empathy and an arrogance that the labour party knows best. Until the party starts to listen it looks like the party will continue to lose support among the electorate and that is just bad for democracy.

They voted to leave the EU so what do Labour do, put a pro EU candidate up. Just to rub salt in the wound Emily Thornberry turns up to canvass after Starmer who tried to overturn the vote. Starmer also against the Treasury moving jobs to the NE. All Labour have is scare tactics over the NHS.

But even that fails here.

The Labour candidate was in the panel that removed services (including A&E) from the towns, then award winning, Hospital.

Now he wants to "bring services back"

Honestly, I don't believe in conspiracy theories, but if they could pick a candidate to lose a by election in Hartlepool, Dr Paul Williams is it.

The Labour candidates have supposedly wheeled out Peter Mandelson to support them. That is bound to make a difference!

Starmer is a tit but it's hardly scare tactics over the NHS, just tactics.

At minimum wage in part time jobs, yes they'll need 2 each.

I'm not interested in debating whether brexit is good or bad, most people on here know my stance. If the Tories win its a direct result of the Hartlepool brexit vote, they think its right for them and they see the tory party as the saviour to deliver and implement brexit. Fair play to the tory leadership for selling brexit to these communities, its worked wonders in getting deprived areas to vote for them.

Interesting point but the Tories have been in power for 10 years. What is it about the tory party that appeals to these areas? I'd hazard a guess at recent displays of nationalism such as the tory ministers displaying flags and the let's get tough on immigration mantra is high on the appeal.

It's far more than that, but it does include being patriotic and proud of this country's achievements.

It does include why, if this country is such a racist and xenophobic place, is it one of the most popular destinations in Europe for people seeking asylum. People who are prepared to pay a kings ransom and risk their lives to get here.

They don’t care about his curtains it’s actions that matter. The working classes are waking up at last which is thankfully why we got Brexit done.

Nothing strange here. For one they voted Brexit but Labour did a U turn on their stance. Labour are finished now. People are waking up to what is happening. Fewer people rely on the MSM to get drip fed the lies of the BBC, C4 etc left wing propaganda.

Nothing at all to do with the brexit vote. If it had been, the tories would have won the seat at the last Election. If the tories win, it's because Labour have deserted Hartlepool and the North of England. Hell, nobody even knows what Labour stand for. They change policies every few weeks and even they themselves don't know what they represent now.

Not true. The only reason the Tories didn’t win in 2019 was because of the presence of the Brexit Party (who took 26% of the vote).

Correct. It has everything to do with brexit. For one of the most deprived areas to vote for a tory MP is a staggering proposition, particularly under a govt with this much sleaze. It says a lot about social media influence, the education system and a worry how far the country will descend into cuts and further austerity.

It says a lot more about the impotence of the Labour party
