So I've gone back and made a table of our highest goalscorer's going back 20 years. It makes for grim viewing for a few years in the 2010s, but we had some brilliant goalscorer's in the 00s. Here is the table (quite amazing how in two seasons, two players scored the same amount of goals in both the league and all comps):

Now lets break it down, Jerry currently has the 3rd highest amount of goals, making him the joint fourth highest scorer in the League with TEN GAMES to go (13 if we get in the play-offs). Surely then this means Jerry will become our highest goalscorer in the league since the turn of the millennium - only needing 2 more goals to match Ince and Murphy!

He has some serious competition to get close to our goalscorer's in all comps though since the turn of the millennium, with no cup competitions left Jerry is left to his league goals. He has the joint 5th highest amount of goals, making him the joint 8th highest scorer - Scott Taylor leading the pack with an unbelievable 27.

So from the tables, we can see Jerry Yates is en route to be our first player to score 20 goals in all competitions since Andy Morrell in our 06/07 campaign, the last time we got promoted from League One incidentally.

With no cup competitions left however, Yates could be en route to hit 20 LEAGUE GOALS. Who knows the last player for Blackpool to hit 20 goals in the League? I had to go further back than the millennium to find out!

Good research, nicely done 👍

I was surprised by the Murphs stats. One of my favourite players but didn’t remember him being prolific.
Scotty Taylor - when he burst through their defence you just knew he would score. Lethal

So with 24 hours gone the people of AVFTT in overwhelming numbers reckon Yates will achieve a goal tally of between 21 - 25. Wouldn't be a shabby haul as the last player to achieve 20 league goals for Blackpool FC was Andy Watson in the 1993/94 season.

- 2 more goals for Yates and he will match Andy Morrell's 20 goals in all comps that hasn't been matched since 06/07
- 4 more goals for Yates and he will match Andy Watson's 20 goals in the league that hasn't been matched since 93/94 (this really surprised me that for 27 years we haven't had a player hit 20 goals in the league)

The fact he is even in with a shout of doing that after not scoring for as many games as he did at the start of the season is quite special to be honest. Not a bad signing!

I tend to think penalties skew the figures. How many of Jerry's goals are penalties, and which if the other players in the table took penalties, and which didn't?

Perhaps I'm being unreasonable, but taking penalties gives a player a big advantage.

I had this exact debate with my old man last night actually. I agree penalties should come into the discussion, my old man used the example of Morrell and said he didn't think Morrell took pens so it is more impressive if they both end up on 20. Which I agreed with, as a penalty is easier to score than an outfield goal.

HOWEVER, the fact a player didn't take penalties in their season is proof that there is a skill to taking penalties - if penalties were essentially a free goal why didn't Morrell take them? Because it is exactly that, a skill to score one - someone was better at taking penalties than him for whatever reason.

It takes bottle and ability to put one away as they are super pressurised. So as much as I agree penalties should come into the equation I don't think it detracts too much because as a player you are gaining the advantage in your goal tallies due to the fact you have the skillset which enables you to take penalties. But as I said earlier, I would definitely agree if two players have the same goal tally but one took penalties and the other didn't, the latter is definitely more impressive!

Here's a table of top scorers in League 1.

Yates is 5th, averaging 0.52 goals per 90 (rather than goals per game which would be 0.46). If he keeps scoring at that rate he'll reach 21, but if we ignore his barren start it will be a few more, say 23.

It's interesting that the players above him have a lower conversion rate but take more shots. So a hint for Jerry - shoot more! 😉

I think he feels the need to skin a player 3 times before he gets a shot away to be honest!

Now the season is over, well done to everyone who voted in the 21 - 25 category, Jerry hit 21 so just snuck into the bracket that secured the most votes.

Let's have a gander at how Yates shapes up now over the last 20 years..

LEAGUE:

ALL COMPS:

So over the last twenty years:
- Our highest goalscorer in the league
- Our joint 2nd highest goalscorer in all competitions

Some season for Jerry, if he can have half the season he's had in the Championship it'll be fine by me!

Didn't realise Phillips was that prolific for us - didn't seem to have any affinity for us in Quest's coverage?
