How much do you normally spend on a bottle of wine

A solicitor for the prosecution team once was heard saying the defendant had paid over £1000 for a bottle for his two guests. One of the guests identities was kept secret to protect ‘her reputation’. But the prosecution team knew what she was and how old. A very different era for our club!

What sort of idiot pays £1000 for a bottle of wine?
There are plenty of good, reasonably priced wines.

Prefer ruby port. £7 from Sainsburys. Lovely sweet full bodied taste.Drink half the bottle then use rest another day.

I don't mind spending a bit more for a really nice bottle of Amarone (for e.g.) at Xmas - £15 possibly, but usually pay £3.99 for a bottle of Portuguese Vinho Verde from Aldi. It is the DBs. Unbelievable value.
As KtV suggests, that works out at about £2 each, per half hour.

About a tenner. Twenty max. I do like a good offer though. 😁
I have my favourites. 🍷
Makes me laugh that some wines in Spain are cheaper than bottled water. And they taste like it. 😬😂😖

£4-£5 usually for a Shiraz, Rioja or similar…
I’ve had £7, £10, £15 bottles, can’t really tell much diff personally…
It’s like buying really expensive steak from a butchers or £4 sirloin from Aldi or asda..virtually no difference but people like to think there Keith floyd..🤣

Usually between £7 and £10 a bottle at home. Might treat myself at Christmas upto £25 for a nice bottle with Christmas dinner

When we lived in France I used to buy 5 litre boxed Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon.
About 9/10 Euros. And it was good stuff. Lovely. Lasted at least a week. That is, if MrsDp didn't have any. 😉
MrsDP doesn't agree with me but there were also 10 Litre boxes at about 16/17 Euros. Much better value.

From memory in the U.K. for a £5 bottle you’re getting about 30 pence worth of wine - the ratio of wine spend to total cost increases sharply between £5 and £10.

Really, there are no "bad" wines. Obviously some are better than others but, the main criteria is just don't drink wines that you can't afford, just to impress. If a wine is expensive, it doesn't mean you'll enjoy it more than a less expensive option.

Given your user name. You don’t perchance live on Thasos?
Unfortunately no we don't. Been there many times and should have been on the first flight to Kavala today but decided against it. Would love to live there but with having 2 daughters and 3 grand kids it's a no no for both of us. We retired 6 yrs ago and took language lessons which we did for 4 yrs and so we now speak Greek to a good standard. 👍

Been told that between 15 and 100 not really any discernible difference, and I'm never going to taste a 1000 pound bottle so probably keep it between 7 and 15 on the rare occasions I buy it.

I'm not a red wine man myself so wouldn't have a clue.

A hypothetical question for the connoisseurs though:

If we did a blind Tizer like test with a £3 bottle, £30 bottle and £300 bottle do we think we could all tell the difference ?

Im pretty sure I can tell the difference between 3 and 30. Even 10 and 30. The step up to 300 though? Probably not.

I was once given a glass of red wine from a bottle that cost nearly 200... no better than a 30 quid bottle in my (uneducated scumbags) opinion!

Every credit. I believe it’s not an easy language to learn?

The ferry trip from Keramoti to Thasos, is really enjoyable.

It’s even better when one of the coaches tries to leave the ferry, before it’s fully docked,
at Thasos. The upshot being, the driver rips the sump off his coach!

Watching Greeks arguing is a brilliant spectator sport!😄

Went through a phase of drinking red wine for a year or so, kind of enjoyed it but it all started with customers giving me it as a thank you for doing a good job, googled some of it and it was pretty expensive stuff, once it was finished I’d go to places like Aldi and found through the taste test that quite often the £4.50 bottles tasted better than a £35 bottle- I’m obviously not a connoisseur, anyway I just go route one now and eat grapes with a special brew chaser

Remember watching Tales of the Unexpected in the 70's. Wife detests husband.
During a snobby dinner party he's bragging to friends about his expensive wine collection. Wife exhibits his most expensive chateau dogs bollocks at a million quid. Opens it & pours it on the floor.
He has a heart attack, job done. Queue music.

Try 19 crimes wine from Australia, varies in price depending on which one you buy and its ABV starting at around £7 a bottle or a two bottle box for £14 at ASDA, surprisingly good. They also do a white and a Rose but haven't tried them.

It's not an easy language to learn but if you persevere you get there in the end. The trip over from Keramoti is very entertaining when people hold their hand outstretched to feed the gulls that follow the boat. I would hazard a guess that we have been to Thassos in excess of 20 times and it is a great spectacle to see a full blown Greek argument that never comes to blows. The biggest insult you can give to a Greek is to raise your hand and stick your palm in their face. Another great spectator sport is watching a Greek family entering and demolishing a taverna by moving all the tables and chairs. Getting back to the subject of wine, a visit to Lazaridis wine factory at Drama on the mainland is a trip not to be missed.

Nothing now 😇
From my recollection though there were some really bad wines at the cheaper end of the market.
Used to enjoy a Fitou back in the day, quite a smooth red. Any wine would make me heave now, it’s been a while 👍
