Is Gary Neville a bit of a Charlatan?

Stuffed the rest of the non-league world by buying their way in to the Football League and getting their games on Sky when no one else ever featured?

I've no problem with people putting money into the game, especially when it filters through to the local community too. The issue is people taking money out of it and as is the case with the Glazers, neglecting the ground and the areas around it.

I think the above is Neville's gripe too so no, he isn't a hypocrite.

100% agree. As long as the liability isn't saddled onto the club people can do whatever they want with their own money.

There’s plenty of examples of financial muscle getting teams promoted from non league. Look at Wigan, Donny, Crawley Fleetwood et al.

Football would be incredibly boring with out of the investment and the chance every club has to progress up the pyramid.

GN was right on everything he said in my opinion, the ESL was an attempt at a closed shop, which would destroy the DNA of English football. 1992 has ultimately led to problems, but it still enshrined the ideal of competition and actually made it more likely for more teams as long as they could be run soundly by competent people. For every Sheff Wed, Leeds and Portsmouth there’s been a Bournemouth, Huddersfield and Fulham.

The problems the PL and it’s subsequent TV deals and monetary inflations have brought are solvable, the move to install the ESL would be fatal. GN and others realised that. I mean this isn’t to say people like him self and sky don’t have other vested interests in the ESL not happening but I felt everything he said came from a Manch lad who wanted to preserve the beautiful game.

The real battle or acid test is going to be in the next few years, can people like Neville and Sky bring about changes in their own ways and the game at large, to make it more of a competition for all 92 clubs whilst maintaining similar levels of finance. That’s difficult, but if football at large can’t do it after this then I don’t think we all deserve to have the game as we know it in perpetuity.

Simon Jordan just passionately outed Neville for being a hypocrite on TalkSport. Interesting watch

The Glazers have done the sort of deal to buy MUFC that IMO should be made illegal.
My understanding is this; The Glazers borrowed the money to buy the club and then have pushed the debt (i.e. the borrowed money) back onto the club as they have a controlling stake. So Man United have borrowed money to buy the club for the Glazer family. I am not surprised that the fans are a little bit upset about this.

Simon Jordan is paid to be contrary. He's very good at it, but don't lose sight of why he's saying what he's saying.

Massively irritates me that we have a whole subsection of media who will say things they don't believe so to "oppose" the narrative. Far enough if you believe it and you want to disagree but Talksport is disagreeing for disagreeings sake.

Think of them as buy to let landlords. The model is very similar.

Completely agree with you. Was merely pointing out what he said.

Simon Jordan needs to keep his mouth shut with his record in football business, buys a club but not the ground, then lies about buying the ground, then gets a loan that bankrupts the club.

Neville is a good spokesman for the reform agenda - energising.

Jordan is a good critic too - though a bit prissy at times and loves the sound of his own voice.

at least the debate is finally happening 👍😀🤞

I'd say Neville's more of a hypocrite not a charlatan.

I think it's fair to say that he knows what he's talking about but when it comes down to Sky/ESL and fairplay in football/Salford FC he looks after his won interests.

I'm amazed to see so many putting him up as some sort of saviour of football.

Was going to say something similar. Neville has a lot of good things to say about the current state of football but for there is the underlying fact that him and his Scouse pal are still preaching whilst on huge Sky salaries.

He should resign from Sky if he really cared about the way modern football is being handled.

This would be laughably counter productive. You can't seriously believe this. 🤣

"You there, using your platform to say a lot of good things, you should resign from that platform."
No different than Prince Harry preaching about the environment and global warming whilst jet setting all over the planet.

.I know he won't resign from his job however you don't seem to grasp the irony of where he is preaching the moral high ground from 🥺

If someone has to be completely immaculate reputation wise before they can comment, then the world will be a very quiet place.

By the way, "preaching from the moral high ground" are your, wonderfully emotive, words.

"Speaking from a position of experience" , would be as accurate, if not more so.

Simon Jordan is working on the assumption that all football business owners are cunts like him, and trying to drag Gary Neville down to his level. All of his arguments are laughable. "You can't say it's all about money, and then say it's not about money", well first of all you're the one who's said it, second of all how incredibly lazy to just unfairly lump all fans with a contradictory position and then say 'look they're contradicting themselves', third of all there is no contradiction - some things are about money, and some things aren't and shouldn't ever be. That simple.

He is the one contradicting himself, he also goes on to moan about 'where were they the last 8 years? Why are we only just seeing this now' well you've just answered your own ** question haven't you, clearly fans accept the general financial model of football albeit begrudgingly, but will not allow the institution itself to be stolen. Criticising them for protesting at the same time as criticising them for not having protested sooner.

I don't mind them being contrarian but at least get somebody who can string an argument together instead of just flapping.

Anyone who ever gave the Oystons any money is a hypocrite when commenting on football greed and governance.

It's dead easy this game.

Bollocks.

People should be able to use a platform without being blameless.

Of course. If you live your life in a moral vacuum. You never thought it odd listening to Neville's rants about the state of football and the working class bloke being priced out live from the Sky studios?

Let alone him and his chinless mate blasting a Hen Harrier out of the sky at Sandringham - FACT

We all live in a moral vacuum when it suits, let's ostracise anyone who takes cash from Sky, so the whole of English football.

While we're at it, let's completely banish any BFC player from 1988 until a couple of years ago, just shills for Oyston. I'll definitely not be watching the play offs on TV if there's no tickets, I'm not supporting Sky coverage, it's Radio Lancs for me, oh wait, they employ Chisnall who backed the Oystons, they can forget it as well. I'll just drive up to the grounds and listen outside, but only after I've found a supply of ethically sourced petrol.

Ah bollocks, I've just found out that Honda indirectly helped the Japanese war effort, I'll have to set fire to the car now (using my ethically sourced petrol) but definitely not Bryant and May matches, what with the whole sulphur poisoning of the Match Girls at the turn of the century.

Wait, I'm typing this using Virgin internet who's complicity in the back door privatisation of the NHS I'm massively opposed to on a keyboard probably made in China who's human rights abuses, climate wrecking and general disdain for decency is a blight on the future of this world.

Fuck it, I'm going to live in a cave, a natural one mind, not one created from the abuse of the working man in the coal and slate industries. I just hope I don't upset the natural eco system with my presence...

Not to mention sometimes it's good to contradict yourself. You know like if Jeffrey Dahmer said 'you know what actually folks, life is sacred, and murdering/making casserole out of your friends is not the way to go' and somebody at the back of the room shouted 'oh you big ** hypocrite!' I reckon they'd be missing the point a bit.

Or like that time Mussolini mentioned that getting the trains to run on time might not be that important in the scheme of things...

I dont mind Gary Neville. Hardworking player loves his club.

I cant help but think though that in the back of his mind he has the idea that he can buy the club with his very wealthy backer if the Glazers need to get out.

Gary Neville is one of the biggest hypocrites in football... he made that blatantly obvious when in his rant he claimed it was a problem that the clubs wanted to stream their games on their own platform, takes away his job - sky and BT have done more to kill football than these owners, it’s their money which has made the big clubs go chase more, always an agenda

Happy to be paid millions by the Glazers though wasn’t he. Said nowt then. Same with that other champagne socialist Sir Alex.

Yes, there are worse folk than Neville on this planet but I've just heard him talking about the greed of Liverpool and Man Utd re the ESL and that football should be fairer.

What's the difference between the proposed ESL and the Premier League breakaway broadcast by Sky.

OK, there's no relegation in the ESL and still is in the Prem but let's not kid ourselves that the breakaway Prem in 1992 wasn't about the bigger clubs having a greater share of revenues - personally I don't think there is anything wrong with that but that's for another time.

I'm sticking with hypocrite for Neville and that's without mentioning Salford.

All those calling Gary Neville a hypocrite on here ...I presume you didn't celebrate when we beat Cardiff at Wembley and I'm sure you boycotted the following season in the greed league?
No? Thought not.

You can hate everything about the moral vacuum and financial abyss that is the FA Premier League and still want your club to be as successful as possible.

I'd want us to go and win that League, but the powers that be have completely fixed in the odds in favour of the status quo. Doesn't mean that I don't want to see us try.

I think the Prem is as fair as leagues come with the way it distributes TV money and prize money. It's certainly the most meritocratic league of all the major European leagues.

Thry could do more for the lower tiers but Leicester won the PL not that long ago.

But we made a better job competing in the premier league than we did in 70/71 in the old first division.
