Is it just me?

After watching the WBA v Watford game last night and some of the Championship highlights, we seem light years away from some of the sides in this division.

Anyone else get the same vibe?
We have to remember we have some key players out injured, Gabriel, Husband, Anderson etc. when we get them back, we’ll look different. Plus of course we’ve only just got Fiorini and Patino in and they will improve with training and game time.

Agree but they are some of the big boys in the division, we still have our marquee signing to make and possible funds from Lavery/Bowler etc to bolster up the squad. It’ll be a tough season but I think we have enough to stay up

I honestly think there's a cloud of delusion engulfing some of our fans at the moment. Watford and WBA and a number of other sides have much more expensive squads and set ups than us. Competing with them is a big ask. Finding players who can. Finding a system that gives us a way to win matches. Last season was pragmatic but it needed to be and it worked. Players stepped up a level and had the confidence and the system to go head to head with Fulham etc. It gave us a base to build on. It won't be easy to push on, with our budget, and a change of coaching staff.

It's very early to be drawing any conclusions about our own side, let alone how we might measure up against others. There's no question that we have a tiny budget when compared to certain sides in the division, but if last season told us anything it's that there's a lot of sides in the Championship who can be great on the day, but are largely inconsistent.... In fact it doesn't take a great deal in terms of consistency to make the difference between 16th / 17th position and right up there in the Play Off Spots.

Don't forget our performances against Fulham in particular. They have just gone toe to toe with Liverpool.

Bully,

it's the Championship. There'll be 1 or 2 sides that are miles better than everyone else (and last season we took 4 points off them...), 1 or 2 that are comfortably weaker than everyone else and then a bunch in the middle where anyone can beat anyone. We're not going to be the 1 or 2 who are miles better, the current task is to make sure we're not the 1 or 2 that are comfortably weaker. Based on (only) the first 2 games, we've won the game we need to be winning and lost the game that Stoke will think they need to be winning.

Of course, it never follows a smooth course; we'll drop points when we think we should be winning and we'll pick them up in surprising situations, but a win, a draw and a loss over 3 games averages out at 61 points for the season. We need to see how things move on from here. It will be mid-October before we can truly get a feel of where we are.

It's been a tricky summer with Quitchly upping sticks suddenly and it'll take time to settle down. The players will have been affected to some extent and it creates an uncertainty. Make a things a bit difficult for Appleton who has to win players over to some extent. The individual players will vary. There's work to do to rebuild the midfield and attack and it'll take time. Appleton is a determined character who will give it his best shot and the club is relatively stable compared to some other clubs and compared with pre Sadler.

Patience required.

Think the whole squad is adapting to the new system. That takes time unfortunately. We didn't look sharp at all on Saturday, a lot of it down to decision making and chemistry between the players in the new system. This will come and we'll look better, but it will be a tough season regardless I think.

you are right RB, I have watched other games plus highlights, and its as though most other teams ( even the ones getting beaten) have hit the ground running, and are really going for it, but we seem to be still in late pre season malaise

And also our performances against Peterborough and Hartlepool remember those as well. Opposite ends of our level of play and perfect example of inconsistency.

The championship is a dificult league wth some good teams. If the Blackpool team we have now played the Blackpool team of 2010 I would think we would be soundly beaten such is the gulf we have to bridge. It really is going to be a long season.

yes thought the same watching that, these clubs have earned 100s millions with visits to the Prem

If it is like the January window, this signing is not going to happen. How many knockbacks have we had already?

Sorry - don't see any of them as key to us improving to be honest. We've gone down the line of bring kids in and bar one Man United season it's negligible to have such a young squad/team.
