Is Sumo still a thing?

Left the TV on after watching Boreham Wood, and You Only Live Twice is on with a Sumo scene.

Got me thinking when Channel 4 used to show it along with that other minority (in the UK) sport Kabbadi ?

Anyway, is Sumo still going strong in Japan or has it faded away - any one seen it live etc?

Yes, Sumo is a very strong old tradition. It’s more ceremonial than a sport it seems, and run by a load of posh old fuddy-duddies. It’s a bit like cricket or horsey events for us, limited crowds in arenas, a few major tournaments etc. But it’s only a 30-second wrestling bout, though the tournament goes on for a week. While the popularity of our football is probably mirrored by baseball in Japan which is more accessible and affordable with the public. Anyway, that’s my impression.

I was watching it on a Japanese Satellite channel a few weeks ago. In one bout they clashed heads and had blood streaming down. Big fat blokes in nappies bleeding wasn't a pleasant sight just before i was about to have my evening dinner.

Sumo was pretty big in the South Paddock in the 80’s and 90’s - he even had his own chant 😜

Watch the highlights of the 15 day events on sky 507 NHK World about 5.30 pm. The last one , Emperor's Cup, recently finished in January. Most win by push outs but spectacular throws still happen. These 200 kilo guys take it seriously.
