Jake Beesley - not an expensive punt after all

What a performance from the team but special praise for Jake who deserved man of the match IMO.

There were so many highlights but for me it was

Beesley’s combative heading
CJ’s decision making
Charlie Kirk’s deliveries
Keshi and Kenny being strong and more attach minded in CM
Lavery roughing up their defenders and setting up the move for Beesley’s first

It was great to get six and Connolly deserves credit for that excellent free kick.

Pleased for Jerry but I thought we lost something when Lavery went off and I think Jerry needed the goal but he didn’t make much impression against a beaten team.

Keogh and Marv were excellent again and Maxi did well despite the dropsies.

Hubby did ok too.

Disagree with your Jerry comment, I thought he did well for the amount of time he had to get into the game.

Today's performance from Beesley makes it so much more frustrating that he hasn't been used earlier 😖
You don't know... maybe he wasn't ready physically/mentally... the championship might have engulfed him coming in too soon from such a lower level... maybe it took him time to gel and work with partnerships in the team... maybe critch has worked wonders with him behind the scenes to be able to get him to this level and today was the perfect time to blood him... and what a return! I don't think anybody expected him to have such an impact! Seen him score goals like that for Rochdale so glad to see him doing the same for us!

As good as he was the formation and team set up today was amazing, along with their desire for forward thinking passes that more often that not reached their man, and decision making and desire to harass every one of their players was absolutely spot on.

Best performance of the critchley/saddler era! I think today we saw how critch wants us to play in the long run. Why he hasn't done it sooner we will never know!

(I think Birmingham being absolutely dogshit also had something to do with it 😅)

Agree with all of this except Husband, just not championship standard.

He showed some great touches and made two cracking runs which went unseen by our players in possession.

When we signed Beesley, Critch said he wasn't one for now, he was one for the future.
And on Radio Lancs before the game, Thommo observed that when a player comes in from a lower league he often needs time to adapt to higher standards of fitness and technique.
So he's a work in progress - but judging by his touch and instinct today, one that's coming along nicely.

Well maybe the management got it right by giving the fringe and new players a chance

We got 2 early goals which really helps settle everyone

Offensively, they weren't the worst side to visit BR, just picked the wrong game to arrive here - 10goals they have shipped in 4 days. Stats wise, they come oput fairly well and better than their fans !

Jerry was brilliant when he came on. He’s got so much skill on the ball. Hope we keep him and don’t sell him for some reason.
I like Jerry, but he takes too much time to get a shot away & that seems to be the problem against better defences (not today) & he loses it a little too often due to hanging on to it rather than passing. Cut those things out & he seems to have enough about him to be a success in this league. I want him to be a success for us.

Insy is normally bang on on his assessment of players but possibly wrong on Beesley. Their defence was awful though.
Whilst one swallow doesn't make a summer here's what I said on the match thread.

"I'm not apologising for saying Beesley didn't have a good game against Liverpool because he didn't.
To be fair though I wasn't quite so critical as some.
What I will say though, and I've said this many times, if you play all the "second choice" players together they play like a "second choice" team.
Put them with the first team and more often than not they play like a "first choice'.
What Beesley had over Gary Goals today was that desperate desire to prove to his manager that he wants his chance, a desire to get in the box and find that goal scoring position and a little bit more pace to get there .
Well done Jake."

I see on Insta Harry Maguire was sending him congratulations .. wonder how they know each other?

Jake played with Maguire’s brother at Chesterfield and they’re all from Sheffield.

Beesley was excellent but let's be clear, he barely won a ball in the air. It was his movement that stood out.

And to think he was getting slated after that Lancs Senior Cup game - made out to be a failed signing.

A week later he gets his first start and bags a brace.

We were knocking it round nicely on the left side between Husband, Kirk, Yates and Keshi. It was great to watch
