Can we please get off his back. He’s a clever player and we have provided zero quality to him.

Watch his goals online, not just his finishing but his movement and positioning. Not a one trick pony either, as he has the ability to score from different positions / situations. Watch also the service he got.

So many moaners, just don’t understand the game. People moaning about Yates, but thinking that Williams is what we need. You couldn’t make it up.

Every player we buy the expectation is ridiculous. If you want good football you need players like Yates. NC needs to get his head up and play Kaikai just behind in a central role, as he’s the only player we’ve got that is capable of playing a clever / defence splitting pass.

We have players that might give 100%, great, but they create absolutely nothing of value. Yates works his socks off and has the ability to be a great striker for us. He needs service and he needs fans behind him.

With the exception of one season in league2, Yates who is 24 in December, has no goalscoring record to speak of. I agree service has been poor but I'm afraid Yates is ordinary, a workhorse rather than a prolific goalscorer.

During the game, a number of people picked up on the incident before half time, where we got clear on the right played a ball to the near post to try and cut out the goalie and CB, and Yates didn’t make the near post run. As if the goalie and CB were both going to miss the ball. Thats a concern because either he doesn’t know that’s the run to make, or he doesn’t want to make the run because he is afraid of missing a chance. Maybe I am missing something?

The thread is about Yates, but the answer to your question is neither, although Madine holds it up and wins it in the air. Having moved Hardie and Nuttall out Critchley failed to bring in a striker with a goalscoring pedigree.
So you say, I look forward to your analysis of the missed opportunities we have created for him.

He's missed the few he's had in over 10 competitive games this season. From what I've seen he lacks a goalscorer's instincts. Madine has a goal in much less game time. As I said neither are the answer to our goalscoring problems.

I was going to say let's get messi in but he has gone 6 games without a goal.. so Sadler can't even go after him... we best stick with Yates or use our liverpool connections and get one of their main boys in :)

I think the O/P makes some fair points.
People tend to look for scapegoats and Yates is getting stick at the moment.
He has not had much service no doubt. His decision making at times has looked poor though.
However looking at goals online which is the modern thing is certainly not the best way to judge a player.
Pretty much any footballer looks like a 'worldie' on youtube if you only view his highlight reel.

Hopefully he will come good & be an asset. 🤞
He is still youngish. He may prove to be a good LG1 player or he might be a bang average LG2 player?
There is no hiding the facts that none of our forwards have a high numbers per games played figures.

Sure he will score fairly soon and we will see with some confidence how he does. Its very early days.

Im tempted to say though it could be file under the new Keigan Parker?

24 yrs old in Dec.

So would you rather have Madine?
As a no 9 and in the short term, yes.
It's stating the obvious that we are not creating chances and that our balls into the box are terrible but it does to a degree cut both ways. At this point in time, Yates movement in and around the box is terrible. He looks scared to get into a position where the ball might fall to him. He seemingly doesn't want to be on the end of anything in case he misses. His confidence looks shot. Not saying he's a bad player but he needs a piece of luck or something to turn his season around.
I also find it a bit rich you talking about moaners and not understanding the game and then tell us about watching his goals on line as if that's the only deciding factor. If there was a feature on Youtube just showing all his misses would you say that was relevant? No of course not, so don't simply judge a player by his best bits either.

It was going to be Turton, but he hasn't actually done that bad.
Then Nottingham, but he was sold.
So they moved on to Williams, but he's shut the majority of them up.

So now it is Yates who has been compared to the last player who was pretty much hounded out of club.

Constructive criticism is one thing, writing players off simply because someone has to be in the firing line is pathetic.

Well you know best 20’s, on every subject.

Rather than take a cheap shot, tell me what you disagree with about what i've said with regards to Yates.
Not a cheap shot, more a statement of fact, your ‘bit rich’ was the superior give away comment.

To answer your question, short-termism is not what we need, as it doesn’t allow for confidence and development. Good coaches can see what they want to achieve, and it takes time. I’d rather NC was strong, than panic from one game to the next, under the weight of expectation.

Madine is one-dimensional and it encourages a way of playing that for me, is anti-football. Fine if that’s what you want, but it’s not for me. Not long ago Larry was getting pelters for hoof-ball to Gnando.

We all want the same outcome, I’d just rather we support players our owner has paid good money for. My view changes if players don’t give it their all, but Yates has worked his socks off. Often, good clever players are not noticed for their off the ball work.

"statement of fact" Well that's a lie for a start. Pretty much all I talk about is football and mainly BFC. So not really a fact at all is it?
Firstly, at this point in time, we do need a short term fix. We needed to stop a run of defeats.
Now I suggest you go and do a bit of research regarding previous posts of mine. Or maybe you'll recall my many posts stating that imo Yates is not a no 9. He's not the player down the middle. He ain't big enough or physical enough and he's easy meat for a centre half. Yates is player who needs to be facing goal not a player with his back to it, which Critchley for most games this season has asked him to be. So that's why I say in the short term if Critchley is gonna persist playing that way then Madine is more suited to the role. And if you don't want to check on my posts you might recall that i've said a good few times that long term Madine is not the answer because he's not good enough. I've also said there's plenty of no 9's even in this division who are a lot better than Madine. But hey, Critchley thought Yates was the answer and I guess he hoped that Madine would be his back up. But it's not turned out that way because Yates ain't a genuine no 9. Fans of Swindon and their manager will tell you that, so it's not just about my "expert" view is it?

Right your next one. "Anti -football" is not what I want at all, so god knows where you come up with that nonsense from, but at this point in time we need results and if that means winning ugly then so be it. Winning ugly will restore confidence in the players that they can go out and win matches. Confidence will come back and hopefully better football will follow. And trust me, even though we won ugly on saturday, there was nothing much about a lot of previous performances that was fast flowing free football. Playing crab like football isn't particularly great football either.

Right, your next one. You'll not find one post from me where I've criticised our owner. I back him to the hilt and that's whatever decision he makes with regards to everything. So I back him, the manager and the players. But i see nothing wrong with constructive criticism of the players and managers if I feel it's warranted. you won't find a post from me that says this or that player is "shit" full stop. I justify all my comments on the players and manager with constructive criticism. I've also recently referenced the fact that I've not seen enough of so many of the players to even form an opinion on yet. Players like, Lubala, Anderson, Williams, Gabriel, Garbutt, Mitchell, Kemp and no doubt re two others I've missed. Yep Sarkic is another.

Nothing "superior" in there at all. Just good old honest opinion.

To be fair i do actually agree with 20s

2 or 3 times yesterday he could have made runs to the near post to get on the end of things

Instead it looked like he was just standing there hoping it didn't come to him

Work rate is great coming deep and pressing but his confidence in the box looks shot

Still time for him as i like the way he works but needs a goal asap ..

As I recall, most of Yates's goals last year were when he played as a no9. I remember reading that on the Swindon forum at the time that when he filled in for Doyle he pretty much bagged every time.

Not sure that will be the case in this division though. He looks anything but a natural goalscorer. Can't fault his effort and commitment though. But that alone doesn't get you goals.

He is absolutely not doing the business in the box. It's odd. He closes down all over the place but wasn't putting pressure on when balls crossed at all. He's on his heels in the box and toes outside it.

It's confidence.

And instinct. Or lack of.

I read on here pretty much the opposite to that. That the Swindon manager and fans said the best of him was in the wide role of a front 3

He might have been more effective for them out wide. But I'm pretty certain that most of his goals for Swindon came as a CF. I was one of the losers checking their message board prior to his arrival.

It's not important now anyway. Different league and right now he looks low on confidence. The worrying thing for me is the lack of goalscoring opportunities.

And instinct. Or lack of.

To an extent. I watched some highlights of last season and it's remarkable how Armand nearly scores in just about every game. Cos he just puts himself there, over and over again.

But, instinct or not, the near post run seems to be a perfectly coachable thing to do. You've got a good few seconds whilst the winger faffs with it to think "ah, run towards it!"

It's not like it's a lack of effort from him. I think it's more that he's looking for space pulling deep but we're not putting those balls in and he's not adjusting to what happens. So possibly, yeah, it's instinct I suppose.

Of any of you on here have played the game a5 any level (Sunday league also) you will know that sometimes it just doesn’t happen no matter how hard you try. All of a sudden it clicks and your off and running. That’s football, even the best struggle at times.

Yep.

Agreed. The advantage that Armand had was his height. You could put the ball in at pretty much any height to him and he would have a chance of scoring. Yates isn't the tallest. The aerial route isn't really an option for him. Feeney also had better delivery than our current widemen.

I agree with you about the coaching side too. You can get players on the same wavelength by coaching timings and directions of runs and crosses etc. Critch will need time to do this.

I don't think Yates is a lost cause. It's just hard to ignore this barron run without a goal. Then add into the mix his goal record above League 2 and it causes you to naturally doubt him.

I want him to succeed more than anybody. Just as I want Critch to succeed also.

in fairness to him, most of the low balls across the box this season from us have been slightly cut back. CJ does this a lot if he isnt going to drive past their full back he checks back and seems to take him an age to get the ball in the box and when he does its usually cut back low to the penalty spot so I can understand Yates reluctance to make the run.Ive also noticed some criticise his first touch but if you look at the first few friendlies possibly Plymouth aswell his first touch was one of the stand out things for me especially long from Maxwell.Get some early low balls whipped into the six yard box for him and for Gary Madine and these two could both start scoring goals imo.

I agree with this.

I do think it is likely that once it all clicks and the understanding appears, we will have a lot of players capable of tearing the opposition apart. The main reason for thinking is this is at that at the moment so many of our players are simply doing the basics wrong, and it is likely down to a lack of confidence in the roles they're being asked to play and in the system itself.

Unless our scouts are crap, there is no way they have seen them playing the way they have been for us so far and thought they look decent; they haven't become poor players overnight. Yates scored 14 goals for a promotion winning side last season, crap players don't score that many goals or even play significant roles in teams that go up; he clearly has ability. At the moment it appears to be a combination of luck and belief he is lacking. Garbutt is another. I will hold my hand up and admit I have seen nothing from him to warrant the praise he has received from fans of his previous clubs, but the talent must be there somewhere.

Once a familiarity with each other and the system builds, I genuinely think we will see totally different players. Like I keep saying, constructive criticism is fine, it keeps us all arguing, but calling players shit serves no purpose. We've all seen some really shit players here over the years, I'm confident when I say none of this current crop come close to being as bad as some of them.

Yep, as a decent goalscorer too in the early 70's. Once got 50 in a season. Second division of Sunday Alliance.
If I could have put together some of my best goals on You tube, I'd be signed up for a League club. Football doesn't work like that though.

We can sign Messi or any top goal scorer but I dont know what it it ,when they arrive at Blackpool bang goes the goal scoring ability, and its always virtually been that way.

That the Swindon manager and fans said the best of him was in the wide role of a front 3
Further, it has been said that if you don't play him wide you are never going to see the best of him.

Also, I'd suggest that at ST he played a more fluid role across the front. Here its a left, right and centre, rigid, unless otherwise directed (CJ going from right to left later 2nd half).

Can we please get off his back. He’s a clever player and we have provided zero quality to him.

So many moaners, just don’t understand the game. People moaning about Yates, but thinking that Williams is what we need. You couldn’t make it up.
I was thinking quite the opposite over the last few months. Not an intelligent player at all.

And your second sentence is hugely patronising an eminently incorrect. What a know it all you come across as.

Keepers are judged by clean sheets and centre forwards by their goals, it’s always been the same. In that regard Yates is struggling big time, the lack of goals puts huge pressure on the team to keep a clean sheet as we know we’re unlikely to win if the opposition score first. Yates needs to be left out, lack of goals means he should be, otherwise the message sent to the rest of the players is it doesn’t matter if you don’t perform you’ll get picked anyway.

I remember that season well 20s but your figures are slightly inflated when you scored 10 in 1 match against the Harold Hoyle blind home.
Also remember you getting sent off 4 times...1 for arguing with the opposition, 1 for arguing with the ref and the the other 2 times for arguing with yourself.....😀

That’s fine Mac, i can only be right by something positive happening - Yates getting goals. You and others can only be right if he doesn’t. I’ll stick with the positivity thanks.

You also said we all want the same outcome which is true. You said we should support the players, again which we do. How else do you suggest we support them? I think every time a player crosses that white line I want him to have a great game. I want to see free flowing football involving all the players where we score plenty of goals. But we're not at that point yet are we? Sure, we need patience and have to hope that it comes and that is being positive not negative. But equally so, most of us are not blind to what we are seeing or more to the point what we are not seeing. So debate and constructive criticism is all part and parcel of what being a football fan is about. Especially on a football message board.
It's really got nothing to do with you being right and others being wrong at all when as you said we all want the same..
