Jerry Yates

With the exception of one season in league2, Yates who is 24 in December, has no goalscoring record to speak of. I agree service has been poor but I'm afraid Yates is ordinary, a workhorse rather than a prolific goalscorer.
I love how many people say ‘besides one season in league two’ as though it wasnt last season and he didnt win the league. It definitely counts as a goal scoring record, sorry mate!

We could have Harry Kane upfront and he’d struggle to score for us at the moment.

Yates should have shot yesterday on his left side, 2nd half but turned back inside, confidence is obviously low but I think there is a player in there.

To an extent. I watched some highlights of last season and it's remarkable how Armand nearly scores in just about every game. Cos he just puts himself there, over and over again.

But, instinct or not, the near post run seems to be a perfectly coachable thing to do. You've got a good few seconds whilst the winger faffs with it to think "ah, run towards it!"

It's not like it's a lack of effort from him. I think it's more that he's looking for space pulling deep but we're not putting those balls in and he's not adjusting to what happens. So possibly, yeah, it's instinct I suppose.
It's rare we manage to cross deep. Time and time we try and play it in low and it gets cut out.

1 goal in 29 championship appearances
1 goal in 18 league1 appearances before signing for Pool and 0 goals in 8 here.
And look at the teams his been on loan at Harrogate town and Harrogate Railway Athletic 3 appearances previous to the Swindon loan

Don't🤔 sell him short also
Harrogate Railway Athletic
3 Appearances 2 goals
And Harrogate Town
8 appearances 4 goals 😂😉

There may be a very good reason why his confidence is low. Like the other striker we signed for even more of Sadler`s hard earned money last season,he`s no f..king good and never will be and Rotherham couldn`t believe their luck when they cashed our generous contribution to their clearout sale. That`s not far off a million pounds flushed straight down the pan plus no doubt plenty on Grayson`s terminated contract and with Nuttall high salary it`s ongoing too.

Who`d be a football club owner.

Some of these signings are bizarre
Don't you think ??
Before signing players the first thing you'd think they would do is look at there stats goals for games ratio in this case Yates one half decent season in L1 strange.

Correction L2

Who should we have signed them?

The thread is about Yates, but the answer to your question is neither, although Madine holds it up and wins it in the air. Having moved Hardie and Nuttall out Critchley failed to bring in a striker with a goalscoring pedigree.
A striker with a goal scoring pedigree when we have a wage cap of £2k a week .

Can you please tell us where you find these ?

Isnt it the case that with a wage cap you have to rely on potentials ?

Mark Cullen ran around a lot (from the little I saw of him) and put in a real shift. Scored a fair few in League 2 but struggled to step up

I certainly don't think there would be any clamour for him to be leading our line if he was still here.

But here's the thing... I'm not convinced Yates does anything Cullen didn't do, based on the first ten games of viewing.

I'd love Yates to come good but just can't see it- even holding the thing up and linking play would be a big improvement on where he's been thus far. Movement lacking in and around the box and the ball just seems to bounce off him.

He is struggling and my fear is it isn't just a confidence thing- it's instinct + technical ability + confidence

Other clubs mange fine

Its how you distribute the money

I'm sure Clarke - Harris is on more that 2k at Peterborough

Other clubs manage to find them. I'm not sure our recruitment team has even looked beyond Yates.

Actually Mark Cullen was our leading scorer in his first season with us in League 1 with 9 goals and then after relegation was again leading scorer in League 2 the following season with 13 goals and scored crucial goals in our play off successes, then 2 serious injuries pretty much put paid to his career here. Not fantastic but a hell of a lot better than Yates ever looks likely to be.

I think Yates has good movement and energy. On the extremely limited occasions he has had sight of goal he has perhaps been unlucky. Give him proper service and the goals will follow.

Playing devils advocate to myself we paid £166,000 for Tony Ellis many moons ago. He could create goals on his own. How much would he cost today?

I agree it's about potential for us. For instance Phil refs Clarke Harris who Peterboro signed from Bristol Rovers for big money. But the key is where they got him from and for how much. It's about finding those players before their first and later second big money moves. Other examples. Peterboro scouted a young Ivan Toney at Newcastle and moved him. Now they are quids in on selling him to Brentford meaning they can go and poach the likes of Clarke Harris and still be in profit. Ollie Watkins is another. I'm sure that even under the Oystons we had the wherewithal to try and get him from Exeter. And look at him now. a 33 million pound player. There will be loads more examples and of course not everyone works out. Let's look at Blackpool. We scouted Ryan Hardie at Rangers but the truth is Grayson just never gave him a chance. Perhaps because the transfer was already close to being done when he joined. And fact is Critchley hasn't given him a chance either. That said, I daresay that Hardie probably thought he was very shabbily treated by us and knowing he had done well on loan at Plymouth was happy to go back by making it clear he was unhappy here.
But Hardie is an example of the type of player we should be looking for. Either a youngster at a big club who is a long way from their first team or a youngster at a lower league club who is playing in their first team but as such a team we have more clout over with regards to wages etc.
The players are out there, we just have to find them.

Yates will have a better career than Cullen. The service he's had has been shite. And the limited chances he's had he's lost his confidence over.
Totally disagree.Yates`s goal scoring record as a striker at League 1 or above level is, not putting too fine a point on it, appalling ,2 in 47 for Rotherham and he hasn`t looked likely to score in 8 games for us this season. Cullen did quite well for us until an operation on a constantly injured hamstring and then a broken bone in his leg put him out for a season and stopped him in his tracks here.

Yates can't see him scoring to many for us at L1 level maybe L2 is his level some players just can't make the step up there's a big difference
Tony Ellis was top notch at L1 level.

Most football supporters are not in nearly as strong a position to cast the net wide in order to identify players that would improve their team and are affordable unlike professional football clubs who may employ scouts and certainly have contacts. We can though examine the records of signings and potential signings who have been identified and of course subsequently assess those who have started playing for our club. That is what most of us do.

So someone like Woodburn then?

Good points

For me it all goes back to the scouting like you say and at the moment I'm not convinced we have a proper scouting network

Takes time and money to build up, Peterborough have been doing it for years, its their business model

We still look a bit like we know a couple of agents through Mansford and they tell us who may be available

Do we actually scout players properly and go out to sign who we want or is it the other way round?

I know Poolfc2011 on the other site was big on this and had a theory

Not every player we sign will be about the goals they score. I imagine Woodburn has been signed more for his supposed creativity. Something we are sadly lacking in.
I agree we need some of that. Fingers crossed he produces and hopefully someone can finish things off.

Re Woodburn, Blades fans were very underwhelmed with his spell at Sheffield Utd a couple of years ago,in the end he did get injured and was sent back early. Let`s hope he`s improved. Any reports from his loan last season at Oxford ?

You want me to randomly name strikers this needs studying at some lengths but first i would look at the players previous stats.
Something that doesn't not seem to have been done by those making the decisions at the club.
No, I asked you who we should’ve signed instead of Yates, CJ, Lubala. You say they’re out there, so who are they?

I didn't have anyone persific in mind all im saying is why sign strikers with no record of scoring goals on a regular basis.
They won't all of a sudden score 20 goal a season men take a look at our striker/midfielders stats on Wikipedia
I'm sure there must have better options.

‘I’m sure’

But you don’t have a clue. If they’re scoring 20 goals a season in this league they’re either getting promoted or going to a top club in the league above, aren’t they?

He was a lot younger and playing higher up the league pyramid while at Sheffield.
I think many people have stated he played against us for Oxford and stood out

He is averaging about 1 in 27 games at this level or above so I don`t think he`s due for a while yet.Even an assist would be an improvement on what he has so far contributed. Is that asking too much in return for the £200k fee plus wages that SS has so far invested?

There's always players with a proven goalscoring record available who for one reason or another want a move we have signed plenty of those types over the years.
Hardie/Nuttal/Yates who have no record of scoring goals were a risk and it hasn't worked.
In my opinion we should have used the funds on players the type Ollie brought in who careers have fallen but had previously scored goals or played at championship or higher level and want to regenerate there careers.
Maybe bring in a couple of lower league player's but not base our whole squad around them.

Delighted for Jerry Yates, he’s a grafter and deserved that goal!! Let’s hope this is just the start for him now and he scores plenty for us!! 👍🏻
