Jimmy Armfield Mural Update šŸ§”šŸ§”šŸ§”šŸ§”

You can appreciate someoneā€™s time and effort and simultaneously recognise that the job isnā€™t quite hitting the mark at the same timeā€¦

Weā€™ve all contributed to the fund for this mural and it needs to be right.

The badge isnā€™t right palā€¦ simple asā€¦ the blokeā€™s being paid Ā£10 grand of the fans hard earned money..

If youā€™re happy to settle for a half cocked BFC badge and a mug that looks like Clarence the Cross eyed Clown then fair play šŸ‘
It's the skin colour that puzzles me and I didn't know Sir Jim was Asian šŸ™„

Unfortunately as it stands it looks nothing at all like Jimmy, the artist has tried to put detail in the painting which isn't in the photo? Instead of trying to show his eyes he should have left them in shadow, same with the teeth, the lighting now looks all wrong. The Ian Curtis pic is different class altogether.

I would hope he's realised it isn't a good likeness and tried again today....

Any idea?

Apart from the cauliflower ear, which might need a bit of corrective surgery šŸ˜‰
Didnā€™t want to mention the ear, as that would be overly picky. šŸ˜„ But you are right. šŸ˜‚

Artists should take comments on board. Iā€™ve done commissions - you listen to the client.

I also commissioned an artist to do a figure painting once, and he painted blƶƶdy fairy wings on.
Thatā€™s currently on eBay, not on my wall as I expected. šŸ˜…

When the artist was announced I checked his portfolio on instagram and instantly thought this might not be the job for him. I'm not trying to put him down as he's obviously got talent but it's a massive undertaking and it just didn't seem the right fit based on his previous work so I did wonder back then why he was chosen.

I'm a huge street art fan and so I know a lot of graff artists here in Brum - really good ones that get invited to paint at Upfest and all the other big paint festivals and jams plus people who are involved in organising paint festivals here. I don't know who the best fit locally in Blackpool would have been for this but I'm sure I know people who would know as it's a tight-knit community. Unfortunately I'm pretty sure it wasn't the chosen artist (who, as I say, is a talented guy but just maybe not for this project).

Also with the mock-up presented as it was it did imply a much more photo-realistic approach - might have been an idea to get the artist to have shown his own mockup in his own style as part of the campaign so people aren't expecting something it's never going to me.

I'm sure the artist himself wouldn't be offended by people passing comment and there's nothing you've said or in the way that you've said it @tangerine_neil, that is at all unreasonable.

Joking apart, the bloke is producing this image in the public glare, whereas a Canvas might be subject to numerous tweaks and changes before the artist is happy and ready to let someone else take a look... It's a huge undertaking and it will no doubt all get sorted...

What we didn't need is some bloke trying to tell us it was OK as it is.. šŸ¤£

I mentioned 'seca one' at the time, as had seen some of his work around the town.

Tbf this guy looks great too and if you see his work on his fb he did a Tyson fury and Churchill with a good likeness. So I'm not writing him off yet.

But yeah you'd think you'd get a sketch or an idea of style before the job was given.

Had a look at Seca One and he seems decent. Here's a few bits from around where I am from the likes of Void One and N4T4, but we have a lot of really good artists painting around Digbeth.

Black Sabbath and the others are more photorealistic. I thought that's what we were getting TBH.
Jimmy looks slightly comical but its a bad original to start with as you can't see his eyes. It requires the artist to guess how the eyes would be.
Mouth and teeth also look out of proportion, more guess work.

Exactlyā€¦ youā€™re defending the indefensibleā€¦

If you were saying ā€œfair play it needs some adjustment, but it will be fine in the endā€ then fine, but trying to suggest that people ought to just be happy with it as it is, is ridiculousā€¦

Thereā€™s nothing shallow about itā€¦. It currently looks fuck all like Jimmy Armfieldā€¦ Amd you can bet your life if that weā€™re a Celtic badge it wouldnā€™t be skew wiff šŸ˜‰
Like trying to talk to a loyd, looks fuck all like Jimmy are you mad ,? as for Celtic badge no idea what you are on about wtf as a Celtic badge got to do with anything. What an absolute weapon , BFC BFC BFC whats that stand for brain dead chancer x 3. You are beyond belief take a closer look and you use the word ridiculous sums you up as a Blackpool fan in fact couldnt be further from the truth.

After reading your post I've just gone and had a gander at the artists previous work and I have to agree with you from his other stuff I'd have to say it isn't a suitable art style for this specific project and I'm surprised they were chosen. I did imagine it'd be more photorealistic like the Ian Curtis and other ones posted.

It was said on twitter he had 10 more hours to work on the face today, but his art style in general is on the cartoonish side so I can't see it improving to the extent people will be expecting. The end product isn't going to be drastically different to what we're seeing now I reckon.

and your not! Part time tree hugger
Not at allā€¦ Do you think thatā€™s a suitable image to honour the memory of a Blackpool Legend?

Itā€™s a joke

As others have said, when you look at sone of the stuff produced by other Street Artists, weā€™ve clearly gone for the wrong manā€¦ itā€™s effectively a cartoon.

Iā€™m not mad, but you are obviously blindā€¦

Why would BFC stand for ā€œBrain Dead Chancerā€ ? - that would be BDCā€¦

Another for the list:
The face is several shades of monochrome too dark and is tonally flat - half the face should be in the light and a should be closer in tone of the ball. Oh, and the base colour of the road sign should be nearly pure white to really stand out and because itā€™s grey, it doesnā€™t.

There should be another collection to pay for a cherry picker and painter to whitewash the whole wall, preferably before tomorrow. We will be a total laughing stock when the understanding Rangers fans see it.

Why not go over and say something, instead of trying to be Clever bollox on here??

It reminds me of the kind of stuff kids were producing for GCSE level art exams in my schooldays.

And youā€™re right (at least in its current form) it that bad, Iā€™d be whitewashing it and getting someone else in to sort it properly.

say something to who?

Iā€™m 200 miles away in South Wales at the minute, but when home I spend most weekends in the Armfield drinking with everyoneā€¦. Itā€™s not like nobody knows who I am ffs.

We know who you are Daz, did you drive there in ya gas guzzler whilst trying to save the planet?

Maybe, just maybe the artist knows what heā€™s doing, and had to add eyes etc for scale, so he can then refocus and reflect for the next day?, add shade, touch up etcšŸ˜„

Maybe due to the hot weather, Armfield is squinting into the sun?

Although this guy who has been commissioned to immortalise our Jimmy is obviously a talented fella in 'his field' , he's probably not the artist who should have been given the task. With such a large commitment from supporters, who would naturally expect a first class body of work, this would represent a disappointment I'd expect. More research and due diligence should have been undertaken beforehand to source the right person for the job. There are many fantastic murals in various parts of the country which are outstanding, like the recent Pete Shelley one. I really hope this comes good eventually and the artist comes out with a lot of credit for his hard work, but as it currently stands, I'd agree with a lot of people on here that in its current form the mural doesn't do the great man justice.

The ā€œguyā€ doesnā€™t work in realism, if you want that then you get a digitally printed bill board on the gable end.
He works in subjective realms to try and replicate the personality and character of an individual, for respect we can let him finish his work and then pass judgement.
To do so before the finished product is just down right disrespectful.
Heā€™s more than capable to deliver a photo picture, this isnā€™t what this is.šŸ‘

It's a nice touch that the mural sleeps at night.

So he has changed it, in the pic its sunny so he's squinting so makes sense you don't see his eyes.

Need to see a better pic from straight on in better light, but looks a bit better to me.

I dont mind a little bit of a caricature look as long as it resembles him, thats what most street art does.
