Just watched the documentary on Jimmy Greaves on BT sports. If you havnt seen it then I can heartily recommend it.

Its educated me on him as a player. Always affectionaly knew him from Saint and Greavsy but wow what a footballer he was!!!

The other thing that struck me was how horrible the pitches were back then in the 60s/70s... like mud baths! And Jimmy was able to glide across them and score as many as he did - incredible player

I think that, had Jimmy Greaves been playing today, with the type of training and fitness levels there are, he would have been at least on a par with Aguerro for scoring goals

He made his debut for Spurs against us in 1961.... and scored a hat-trick.
He did and I remember being horrified as a schoolboy when he made that debut but there`s no denying what a great player he was and it was tragic for him that Ramsey did not pick him for the`66 final.I think Ramsey did not want to change the side that had done so well against Portugal and actually preferred the hard working types,Greaves was more of an artist.

On the documentary it covered this and Jimmy had picked up an ankle injury earlier in the tournament that needed a couple of stitches Ramsey didnt want to risk playing him as back then no subs allowed. It was the last tournament that had this format - if subs allowed then he probably would of been used and who knows how extra time would of gone

Watched it last night and it's superb, what a player. I didn't know about the death of his baby son due to a cot death and how that affected him mentally and how he was playing again a few weeks later. One of the games legends.
