Jordan Gabriel is not a Full Back. Discuss

He’s a better wing back for sure. Same goes for Garbutt and James. Always suprised and slightly irritated me Critchley nearly always insisted on 2 CDM as opposed to 3 CB’s which would have given Gabriel and Garbutt chance to play to their strengths.

I've no problem with his ability as a RB. Of course he makes mistakes defensively but show me a modern FB that doesn't.
His pace allows him to get himself and his team mates out of trouble and it's not unusual for him to be the first man back.when the opposition counterattack
Good FBs do of course contribute significantly to a teams attacking options and if you look at match stats the FBs tend to have the most touches in a game that's why it's important that you have 2 good ones. For my money Jordan is developing nicely.

The game has definitely changed since I started watching it where your LB/RB rarely got past the half way line now there the busiest person on the field.

MA prefers a 4-3-3 system so your width will come from your two in that role so will suit Gabriel.
Just when did you start watching?
In the fifties and sixties we had the pioneer of attacking full backs in Sir Jimmy Armfield.

We always seemed to have more attacking intent.. and were better to watch when Gabriel played last season. Yes he got caught out of position occasionally but I’d forgive him for that for what he offers in driving the team forwards. He’d be a regular starter in most games if I was picking the side.

I'd like to see him improve his quality on the ball in the final third but, like you say, his energy is infectious and he often drives us forward when we're struggling to get out of our own half.

I remember sweepers. Does anyone care to define what one actually is?
A centre back that can read the game well, intercept danger, drop a bit deeper to pick up the ball, start attacks with incisive passing or a box to box midfielder over 32 whos legs have gone but wants to continue playing!!

So these days they are known as CDM’s But they were never previously centre backs, perhaps?

Sweeper used to be a centre back that could play a bit but the game is always evolving. I thought a CDM was a centre mid that can't score!

It’s sounding more and more like a description of my footballing career :)

Think it’s a myth his defending is that bad tbh. Generally didn’t have a winger to help him either.
Agree with Kurt. I think he actually made less defensive mistakes last season than the one before, and we’d gone up a division. Don’t think he’s as bad defensively as people make out.

He had a couple of bad games when he first arrived, since then has improved leaps and bounds. Modern full backs have to be able to get forward which he does and works well with winger in front of him. I can't remember last season any of the opposition wide players getting the better of him for a whole game, and defensively his covering work is very good.
