Jordan Thorniley

He is a good player, but does his face fit ? Some managers/coaches just have to have all their own players and when they’ve made up their mind , there is no changing it , no matter what !

It's definitely a contrast as it's his attitude which is supposed to be why he hasn't been in favour and was told he could leave by Critchley in January. And has a left back ahead of him in the pecking order when there's a choice.

He's been part of the squad that got clean sheets against:
- Charlton (0 - 3 win)
- Rochdale (1 - 0 win)
- Northampton (2 - 0 win)
- Wigan (0 - 5 win)

Since having to slot in he's only been involved in two defeats
- Brighton (2 - 1 loss)
- Ipswich (2 - 0 loss)

Not bad for a lad who was told he was free to leave last month, I feel bad for him in a way as he's been stepping up when its been asked of him - can't blame him for the Brighton defeat and we were shite all round against Ipswich. Yet he's still not favoured clearly as Critchley has been starting Husband ahead of him, he only played yesterday because Husband picked up a knock - I can't complain too much though if the wins keep coming!

Does anyone have the actual “he can leave” quote from Critchley about Thorniley.

“If an offer came in for them to go and play somewhere else on a regular basis ,then I think it’s something we’d be open to and they’d want to do because they’re not playing football at the moment.
“All footballers will tell you they want to play at 3pm on a Saturday. They want to have that chance to compete for three points, which they’re not doing at the moment.
“If that situation arose and everyone was happy with it, then we would be.”

Standard fare then....putting them in the shop window/right offer. He’s trusted a bit more by Critch now I think but the situation is probably still the same.

Think it's something where for whatever reason first impressions counted and NC didn't like what he saw from Thorniley (and Howe) in a reserve game against Huddersfield in his first week here, a year ago. And there's been no way back until the last month and the centre half problems have forced it. Even up to the West Brom FA Cup game when Gretarsson did the splits and had to go off, they brought Mitchell on and shifted Husband into the middle. Whilst Thorniley had to sit and watch from the bench. And only made that bench because it was nine subs.

Personality clashes aside, I think he is being treated a little unfairly. Ok, he had a sticky start with us, but so did Gabriel and Ekpiteta. When called upon he hasn’t let anyone down, his attitude has also been excellent. He hasn’t thrown his toys out of the Oran, he has kept his head down and tried his best. A very good back up, we could do a lot worse.

Pool are currently blessed with four CH’s, two of whom are injured. Of the four, two are left sided, which balances the back line.
When Ballard and Marvin played together, it was always a tad disjointed as one of them always struggled to get the ball into their favorited foot. Husband’s early season experiences are not that easy to forget, but he too balances the line. If the problem is indeed wages, then Jordan may well be using his chance to shine in order to get a move to where he can earn what he feels he’s worth. On the evidence we’ve seen latterly, he may be right.

I think he already has.
After reading posts this morning I understand it was more to do with wages rather than ability.
Hopefully something can be sorted👍🏻
The wage cap has gone. He is certainly a decent player but is weaker in the air. Never really tested in the last couple of games in that respect.

We have certainly had an upturn of results with him in the team and shouldn't really be dropped if he is playing and we keep winning

He's done really well.

We are so strong at centre half, even without 3 of the 5 players Critch thinks can play there...

Came in at short notice yesterday and did a decent job. He may not be the quickest or best in the air, but for 5th choice he has done well.
A good squad player, and goes about his business with little fuss.
I have seen mention that he is second only to Madine, on the wages front, coining over £4,100 PW but not sure how true that is.
If so, it could be why they want to move him on.

Critch can't have changed his mind too much about him, let's not forget there was a left back ahead of him in the starting XI initially yesterday.

Worrying that NC is unwilling to change his mind. Personally I don't believe that but if it were true then those are not qualities for good football management. Thornily has exceeded my expectations but ultimately it will depend on the quality of other defenders in the squad as to whether he is kept on next season.

Well we will know in the next few games, if Husband is fit and starts ahead of Thorniley. I only see Husband as an emergency CB and Thorniley is certainly a better CB and has also shown he can pass the ball. If the wage cap has gone, then that can no longer be a prime issue. Personally, for next season, I would have Gretarson and Thorniley covering the LCB position and Ekpiteta and another (such as Ballard) covering the RCB position
