Just back

These Bowler should have scored comments. At the game I wasn't sure if he should have or not. Seen it back on the highlights and if he'd tried to tuck it just a bit more inside the post then the keeper would have saved it. He was only a fingertip away from getting to it anyway. If he got a touch to it, we'd be saying great save so think it's a bit harsh to say he should have scored.
As my mate said to me… he’ll have been putting them away week in week out since he was a kid. A touch more bend in the ball and it was inside the post.

We probably should have done better with the follow up. I’d have to see it again, but it might have been better left to a player running on.

Just unfortunate in my view…

His dribbling was sublime yesterday and he looked a threat pretty much every time he got the ball in a good position… until
Corbeanu kept trying to trip him up….

A few crosses / final balls were a bit frustrating, but again that’s to be expected…

Do you still want to sell Bowley so the club can count money 💰

New left back did a good job, Fiorini started well, Corbeanu didn't seem to know where he was meant to be playing.
Yates and Lavery didn't offer much, Madine wasn't great but we would've struggled without him.
Hamilton can be good occasionally but today he was a liability.
Ekpiteta played like he had blinkers on.
Virtue and Carey didn't really impose themselves.
Bowler, Connelly and Williams did their jobs well.
Grimshaw didn't have much to do.
We need 3 or 4 players of better quality to comfortably stay up.
I like the way Appleton is trying to play but not sure he has the players to do it particularly in the front 3.
I agree with much of that except for Jerry who I thought played in a fairly unaccustomed role excellently.

If I read Phil's post without knowing who he was, I'd expect him to be about 6ft 4 and built like a brick shit house. You'd have to be that big to back up that gob.

I said yesterday that on leaving the ground I said to my partner in crime that if I was Sadler, I’d probably think “Fuck It” after yesterday and throw the kitchen sink at signing him on a 3 year deal.

How realist that is I’m not sure Phil and I might feel differently if he reverts back to his form from early last season…. I’d like to think we’ve already tried to sign him longer term and in fairness I’ve consistently said that if we could do that I’d be happy…

My issue is that with offers at £3M and above, I’m not convinced any one player is worth that over a single season….Not unless we have money to burn.

Bowler was outstanding yesterday particularly in the first half. Today's Nixon rumours have it that Forest and Bournemouth are still interested and he certainly played to impress.
If he has to go, and its looking increasingly likely, we could certainly do with a bidding war.

I think I can trump Phil's day. Due to the announcement of the rail strike, which didn't occur on Northern, I had booked the national Express Coach from Bradford, leaving at 08.15 to Blackpool arriving 10.30. I had decided to walk the 3miles to Bradford Interchange if the weather was OK estimated time on Google maps 1 hour 5 minutes. Now at my age, I thought I'd better leave a bit extra time so set off at 06.15 arriving at the Interchange at 07.05. I must admit it was a route march pace. after about half a mile the rain started and got heavier so I was completely soaked when I arrived at the Interchange. Time for a coffee and a bacon butty. I noted that the bus came along central drive to the bus station opposite the Castle Pub, due to the closure of the seaside way. A note was made as my return journey left at 17.15.

So it was a 5 star Breakfast in the Continental Cafe on Topping Street, well worth the money, and then a short walk to the Brew Room for a quick pint. Two or three more were enjoyed in the Cask & Tap and then a leisurely walk to the game.

I met my brother in law and his son and grandson at the ground, it was the grandson's first ever game and was nearly his last when he said man Utd were the best team, and i was old and ugly!!! Probably true though 😵‍💫

I enjoyed the game and what a fantastic goal it was by Connolly, following on from an excellent save by their keeper, Lumley, it appeared early on that it was going to be a massacre , but ended up rather 50/50, with both Lumley and Grimshaw making excellent saves.

Now, I've always classed David Webb as one of the better refs, but, IMHO he had a rather bizarre match, yesterday. An example being after a tackle that nearly took our man's head off, studs up and high, no card was given, and it seemed to be that Reading received the majority of free kicks for.so called, unfair tackles, but that's enough about the man in Black.

After 7 minutes of extra time, yes he played an extra two on the mandatory five, it was a case of escaping from a slow moving crowd both inside and outside the ground for a dash along Central Drive to get my bus home. I arrived after a short run from the King Edward to the castle where the driver was closing the luggage compartment ready for departure. I just made it. Believe me rushing and running when you've already done over 15000 steps is no fun at my age.

A good result with some good performances and some not so good, but, it was first outing and 3 points to start with i will take.

FOOT NOTE: I have two very large blisters on my feet, which are rather uncomfortable this morning. UTMP.
You walk 3 miles but can't stand up at an away game

Mmmm......

Ahh so you have changed your mind

Well done 👏

I’m proud to say that, I change my mind all the time… 👍

Although on this, no I haven’t…

My thoughts have always been the same that if we can’t sign him on a longer term contract, then unfortunately we have to take the money.

Yes… there’s a value to having him for a single season.

As has already been said, with £3M we can make improvements across the whole team and those improvements would be here beyond next season.
We won't get 3 million for him with Bullshit Ben leading the negotiations and even if we did its still too cheap for someone who is our sole creative spark

Relegation costs us around 7 million

Stop calling him Bullshit Ben or else I’m not speaking to you. You’re just trying to wind me up !

He’s not going to be the difference between us and relegation and if he is, then to be frank, that’s far too much risk to have in one player (who might get injured) so it’s a cast iron argument to take the money and replace him.

To my mind it’s very simple…

We try to sign him for 2 - 3 years .., And I’d pay him a decent wage to sign a proper contract…

If we can’t make a deal work then we are open to offers…

And £3M or more and he’s got to be let go and we try to do what we can to strengthen what’s left.

But there is a price on his worth to this team currently and its certainly more than a couple of million
It's a really tough call this. If we got yesterday's Bowler for the season (and we don't always get that level from him, which without question yesterday was outstanding) and a couple more top clsss players, striker and attacking mid-fielder, so we could compete at the top end of the table he'd definitely be worth keeping.
The reality is though we probably can't get 2 top class additions without selling Bowler to fund them.
That's not being small minded its just where we are financially at BFC at this point in time.
PS.
The public toilets in Stanley Park by the cafe are an absolute disgrace. You did well to avoid them. 👍

Bowler will put bums on seats at this club. Who else makes you stand up and take notice like that.

He petered out a bit in the second half of last season when we played teams the second time around. They put 2 or 3 men on him - which tells you everything.

Throw the boat out SS and use the compo from Critch to nail him down AND go for someone else as well. The Critch money was an unexpected bonus.

I'd agree with you and Phil here.

Obviously, the team will benefit on the pitch from having him available all season and the club would benefit from the monies received from his sale.

The $64m question is at what price do we agree to sell him, I'd be with you re anything over £3m.

Bottom line is if Bowler gets tapped up (I'm sure he has been) then he'll force a move anyway. Personally I can't see him staying.

If you could get £3m then I don't think there's a choice. He has to be sold. The £3m + £1.25 should bring in 3 very good players. That is of course if the money IS reinvested and we don't sell him to a rival (BR for example).

That said I bet he signs a 3 year deal with us now😂

The problem being that even if we do get 3 million and the club wants to spend it (and that's a big iff) there is no guarantee that Bullshit Ben would be able to get the deals done given our recent record in fcuking up deals

Let’s face it… nobody is going to complain if that happens ( well someone probably will, but you het the point)

If you don’t stop calling him bullshit Ben I’m going to hire the fake FY4 Mike to beat you up.👎

Yeah I was probably a little bit harsh on Yates but I have said elsewhere he gets 10 out of 10 for effort and commitment from me and hopefully the moments of quality will come if he adapts to the role over time.

not gonna get involved in how much we should get for Bowler but there is no guarantee that even if we spent every penny of it on other players that it would improve the team. It would still be a gamble. There is no guarantee that spending whatever amount brings you a good enough player. Nuttall tells you that. And whatever fee we paid for Hamilton, and maybe even Lubala.

Of course there’s no guarantee… There’s no guarantee he won’t break his leg next week either…

Yo have to make a balanced decision and that’s always going to be the case in life, in business and in football.

If it was an exact science then it would be boring 👍

On the new players.

Thought Fiorini was great 1st half, but got brushed off it a couple of times easily which better teams will punish.

Williams was excellent, cool and dominant.

Liked Thompson, upgrade on Garbutt without doubt so that’s decent.

Think the guy on loan from Wolves was wearing Heeley’s but hopefully he’ll get better once he wears football boots.

Made up Connolly got the goal, model pro, always gives everything.

I would like us to get a dominating midfielder, tall and physical and a mobile centre forward to add into the mix now and keep Bowler but I get that 3 million is a lot given his contract. He was unplayable for parts yesterday and if he was to go it would take away so much of our attacking threat, to the point of me thinking is that worth 3 million.

Sampled the new North Stand ‘fan zone’ and thought it was excellent bar for it pissing down. Maximising income for the Club too. Is that for us every game or just when away fans have half the East?

On that, Reading are a dogshit club in my eyes, a few of their fans waving notes on the way out, which I find so strange bearing in mind they looked like they dressed in Matalan or Primark. Shit following 1st game and a shit virtue signalling kit.
When we get a right back maybe Connolly can be added to the midfield 3, would save us a few quid because if Bowler goes we are going to have to invest a lot of money in that front 3!!

Never any guarantees. Bowler might break his leg tomorrow, do a CL.....

The equation I think is something like this-

Does Bowler = Rodgers + Brannagan + Lyons + the SW lad? Obviously the names have been changed to protect the guilty, but the point is an equation does exist.

Why didn't MA take Thompson off much earlier?
early into th 2ndhalf he was struggling with what looked like cramp, but might be more serious.
Did more harm than good keeping him om until nearly the end.

IF we were to sell Bowler, then we would have to have a replacement lined up and ready to go, without any screw ups. No excuses. Failing to close deals after his sale would be a serious failure of the club in my view and would be jeopardising our Championship status, and consequently making the incoming transfer money meaningless.
All hypothetical at this stage, but we simply cannot afford to fail to land our targets before the end of August - if we sell him.
If it was up to me, I'd be looking to use some of the Critchley compensation to persuade him to sign a new deal with a minimum fee release clause if it were possible, like we've done with Grimmy. We'd certainly get a good return on that investment eventually. I'd like to assume we'd already tried that, but with the way we've conducted our negotiations this summer who knows...

Yep I agree with that 👍

I'm pretty sure Morgan Rogers is lined up to replace him.

But if neither Bowler or Rogers are done deals are there other clubs showing an interest in the latter. You'd expect so. So why should City or Rogers himself hang around waiting to see if we sell Bowler?
Of course I don't know that but Nixon tweeted a couple of weeks back we are still interested in Rogers as it seems we were last January. Maybe Rogers fancies us and is prepared to hang on before committing himself to other suitors. It might be transfer deadline before all these things pan out.

Yep probably a bit lightweight in midfield shame we didn't get Brannagan

It was good that Appleton recognised if though

Dougall came on and the first thing he did was foul someone
Yes, it was Ince. One of the very few times the ref actually called it right. I sometimes wish our lads were as adept at conning the ref as most other teams seem to be.

Rogers would be a top tier loan we only shop middle tier

Sorry but them the facts

We'd made 5 subs and Reading none at one point.
Yep, have to admit I was a bit unsure of the three at once in the 85th minute. Thought with added time that's ten minutes so I'd have probably held one back just in case. That was certainly what I was thinking at the time. All turned out right in the end though.

You need to stick with it Mac leaving early is giving up

It's worth it in the long run

Btw Freddie my 3 year old spent the entire second half whacking me on the head with an empty drinks bottle
At 30 mins, our 5 year old grandson repeatedly said "I want to go home now" and pulled funny faces at anyone who'd laugh at him 🤣
I tod him he wasn't coming again, to which he insisted he was.
Our 🍊future is in safe hands with these kids 😖

Can't top Phil or Curryman's tales but I wasn't supposed to be at BR because of umpiring commitments. (Who -plays football in July??!!). However, the weather intervened and at 2pm my match at Broughton was called off. A sprint down the M55 back home, pick up my ST and having the wife dropped me at the tram stop got me to the game 15 minutes in. Pity I missed the goal, but still enjoyed what I watched even though the 2nd half was squeaky bum time.
