I think that’s because the plot and some of the script is very very poor, unfortunately.

Totally unrealistic like a lot of TV these days, but well acted.

Yes, strangely enough, I watched them all around Xmas and think it's brilliant. Series 2 is probably the best, I reckon.
I have to say that Keeley Hawes was also great in the follow up to Life on Mars (forget it's name)

The continuous scene from keeley in that final episode was stunning. I'd go as far to say I cannot recall anything better than that.
