Keogh to Ipswich

Dougall = Southern. Complete lack of what he brings to this side. A bit of bite and not being bullied. Bet players hate playing against him.

Dougall should be going no where and it was very clear from Reading and also Stoke what he brought to this side. Appleton hasn't said he doesn't rate Dougall, he said he was behind.

Scrafton said we rejected their first two bids, indicating that they'll pay a fee.

He was certainly in our plans this season, at least as a squad player, so we weren't desperate to get rid of him like those other players you mentioned.

It won't be a huge fee, but something is better than nothing.
Definitely. He's in his option year so they will be haggling to make sure they're covered in full for what they'd have to pay him anyway as they're already committed to doing that up front.

I've no problem with this move. Wasn't he staying in the hotel? Can't blame him for wanting to be close to family. It's the recruitment team which are giving me major concerns.

He's done the job he was brought in to do when maybe Critchley looked at the recruitment team as well and thought I need to sort something here. I wanted a Dan Ballard, they've given me an Olly Casey etc

The average age of the squad will start to drop not just in this window but definitely after contracts finish next summer. A group recruited under his watch who he has more confidence will listen to him and how he wants to play will be his focus. His voice has to be the loudest or he can't work.

One of his first comments about the squad when he met everyone was about some of the characters he was inheriting and he got stuck in about the youth embarrassing the older players after that Leeds pre-season game at York. He's not backwards in coming forwards until he gets it like he wants it.

Good at lowering wage bills too.
You make it sound like he's uncomfortable managing experienced pros. Which isn't a strength.

I think this is more of a case of not being guaranteed game time here and being closer to his family in the south east. I wouldn’t look into it anymore than that to be honest, he’ll go with the best wishes of everyone at the club.

As much as he’s a fan favourite it isn’t a disaster from a football perspective.

Only going off what he's done previously and how he talks about jobs he's had. Went from 30yo ave squad age to less than 22 within one full transfer window at Lincoln. Motivated by a need to cost cut but also by how he wanted to run it. Liam Bridcutt only really stood out as their main experienced older player but too injury prone which is why they could afford him.

Did similar at Oxford I think in league two by picking up lads like John Lundstram.

Its probably not the first rebuild its the second one when the loans go back that is the struggle.

I can see why a move to Ipswich would be attractive to him, going back to his roots in what is probably his last season then maybe into a coaching role. The way he converted the boo boys into his No.1 fans is testament to his personality and character.

The way he converted his own teammates into believers was more important. Him pointing at what everyone else should be doing who were pointing at what he should be doing in those early games.

No pre-season and a patched up defence and midfield looked like a license to print disaster.

Abel off here who seems to be reverred as a football expert called him a fraud early on.

I had hoped that he would be getting some sort of managerial position with us because of those qualities

Will all go towards it if that's what he wants to do. Working with Critchley for a year and his prep for games you'd think he'll have taken something from it because of his emphasis on coaching.

He may have been offered exactly that at Ipswich, plus his first club and within travelling distance of home. No brainer for him.
Could be. They look like they need some help from the goal they just conceded.

Certainly no stand-out reason for him to stay here now Critchley has moved on from his point of view if he's got a choice. A little bit like Kevin Phillips being in limbo when Appleton came in for Holloway first time around.

Couldn't he learn some stuff off Appleton?

Yeah just hoped we’d be the beneficiaries but maybe it’s not on the cards or he wants to be further south for understandable reasons. Good luck anyway.

Would be a good move for mad Uncle Richard. I'd be pleased for him (and he won't be up against us this season).
He's 36 this week, and I don't think he'd be able to repeat his high standards of last season, both in terms of injuries and keeping pace at this level.

He's already picked up an injury. The Rhys Williams loan is already starting to look like a very good one.

I think he's been excellent for us, wish him well especially if he prefers to be nearer to his family, which is fair enough
Picking up a fee is a bit of a bonus as well.

From thinking to he was too old and slow when he first arrived to seeing him do a good job during his stay and a bit of an entertaining character ‘to boot’. Thanks and good luck for the future.
