Is there anyone on this site currently living the keto lifestyle Who may be able to advise me ? Due to some health issues, my GP has advised me to go on a low carb regime , so I need some advice on the best low carb bread, preferably rich in protein and fibre. Any advice would be most welcome. Thanks !

Make your own bread with Almond flour.
Coconut flour is OK too.
The cheapest is from Aldi/ Lidl.
Cost £5 a bag from major supermarkets or Holland and Barrett.

Carbs are fine if you are exercising hard - to sweat level. Otherwise it’s deposited as fat

Best option you can take outside of living a hell is become friends with Eggs, Chicken and Greek Yoghurt.

You can have as much veg or salad as you like. Avoid, Avoid Avoid Fruit..... seriously fruit is so high in sugars and genetic testing shows that the majority of us cannot process fruit very well (unless you are a distance runner and even then it’s an inflammatory food)
Avoid pasta, bread, rice. Switch potatoes to sweet potatoes

Breakfast - Greek unflavoured yoghurt or Fage / Skyrr. High protein and filling. If you need flavour buy a small tub of flavoured protein powder and put one scoop in. Tastes like a desert but will keep you full up for hours and hours and very little Carbs.

Lunch. Eggs, chicken, fish. Salad of course.

Dinner as above - plenty of veg or salad (become friends with Spinach!)

Obviously beer and sweets/crisps need to be massively cut back as they are high sugar/salt

It won’t take you too long to get your health where you want it bud. Don’t go starvation diet as it will be hell to do. Scrambled eggs or omelette are my go to when I’m lazy and want fast food - Chuck in the chillies as they speed up your metabolism

Cheers for that 👍

This!

Also remember you shouldn't cut carbs out altogether, 50g a day is fine but it soon adds up.

Gutted to read the fruit comment, I have blueberries, raspberries and Greek yoghurt for breakfast, I’m a wrong ? If so what should I have, don’t have time for making scrambled eggs in the morning.

We don't have much bread nowadays and so no longer tend to get the onset of love handles anymore. ☺

We have generally replaced bread at lunchtimes with salads. Something like mackerel or salmon makes the salads a bit more interesting.

Top advice this Chunky

My wife can't eat normal bread it bags her up so she has low carb bread not the cheapest but only having a couple of slices a day it ain't bad. 👍

I do scrambled eggs in the microwave, takes 2 mins max.

Keto diets are usually prescribed to help people with diabetes moderate their blood sugar and insulin levels. I've got other gut issues and have been round the houses with various so-called specialists.

Suggest you move in with Chunky - his diet would do you well. And if he's got a gym where you can lift weights even better. Cardio is better than nothing but weight bearing exercises so much better for many things as you get older.

You could add unsalted nuts ( though I avoid peanuts/cashews), coconut yogurt (Tesco) and little glass of red wine and a few pieces of dark chocolate are nice treats. Personally I don't do a lot of dairy - a protein called Casein A-1 which is found in Northern European cows has been linked to diabetes. But southern French/Italian dairy are free of A-1 such as mozzarella, brie, roquefort. Careful with sweeteners - stevia and xylitol are ok (at Holland & Barrett).

If you can keep off refined carbs (pasta/rice/potatoes/bread) for a month or two then you may be able to re-introduce them in smaller portions without too many problems. You will probably get cravings for the first few days but that should ease. It's easier to stay off carbs in better weather (salads don't seem quite so unappealing) so it's a good time to start.

Tip - my go-too if I have to go to McDs with family is a Big Mac and a Cheeseburger (chuck the buns away), small fries and a cup of tea. Works for me.

So true about the fruit advice, although many of the berries are superfoods and have other health benefits. Government slipped up there. When they were doing the 5-a-day advice, it should have been referring to veg (which have negligible trace sugar).
Bananas - high sugar, especially if left to go over ripe.
One apple is like 1/2 can of Coke in sugar.

We have a similar lifestyle diet to Chunkylad, plus I’d add 6 to 8 glasses of water a day to it, surprising how many benefits it contains. Also ditch what we term the ‘brown stuff’ burgers, chicken nuggets, chips anything deep fried, also would recommend leaving convenience foods, processed food etc. out of your shopping trolley. Try Oatbran mixed with chia seeds to make a porridge for breakfast plus yogurt stirred in. We also have ryvita instead of bread most days, once you get cracking you’ll soon feel the benefits. Good luck.

Fruit is the hidden danger. It’s got good vitamins but massively high sugar content and also toxins.

Dr Michael Barnish (Bispham lad) is an expert geneticist and nutritionist and adviser to many athletes and celebs. The fruit bit is his big eureka moment when you see at a cellular level it’s impact.

The Greek yoghurt with a scoop of flavoured protein powder (Whey - companies like Ultimate nutrition do great flavours) gives you loads of protein, keeps you full, has good amino acids to keep you well and doesn’t need cooking 😁👍

Great advice again. I use Stevia (Truvia)

Im fortunate to have a good gym at home - you don’t need much if you start from scratch. A bench with a barbell holder and dumbbells you can do so much. Even just start off with doing press ups whilst your knees are on the ground until you build up strength.

As the good doctor says resistance work as you get older will be a god send. It slows your body breaking down and this will keep you active well into yourself 80s for most.
My father has now got into this in his mid 70s along with Yoga. His bad back of 30 years is now improving and he’s cut down on the pain killers too.

Sorry to bleat on but I’m kind of passionate about it, in the same way 62 is to hating every win we have

I hate to say this to some people but, I eat anything and everything and never put weight on.
It worries me sometimes, but I'll accept it. 😜
P.S. Breakfast of Crunchy Nut Cornflakes and a Weetabix.

My Mrs is doing the Keto diet and swears by these products as you asked specifically about low carb bread substitutes, but they are expensive for what they are.IMG_3147.jpgIMG_3146.jpg

Agree most of what Chunky and Dr H have said. To start cut out refined carbs bread/pasta/rice and potatoes, also anything with refined sugar. Limit calorie intake to whatever you burn off during the day unless you want to lose weight in which case you need a calorie deficit. Avoid processed foods. For me meat, fish, dairy for protein with plenty of fresh veg. I consume fresh fruit most days, usually with extra thick double cream. Greek yoghurt, kefir, honey all good but again limit your intake each day. Changed my diet two years ago, lost a stone straight away and it has stayed off. My aim was to stay healthy into old age. Also agree with the increased strength/resistance training to preserve or increase muscle as you get older.

Genetics Dave. Some people have such genes that they can process sugars very quickly but struggle to build muscle mass and stay skinny (pipe cleaner arms and legs)

Some are actually genetically blessed (like Arnie and many athletes) that can build muscle and stay lean too.
Majority of people unfortunately have to be really choosy with their diet.

Interestingly there are genes also that manage your capacity to deal with and process smoke. It’s why for some smoking has little medical detriment in their lives and live to ripe old age smoking like chimneys and eating smoked foods.

Try 90000 steps a week and you won’t need to diet,iv tried dieting and never lost weight, only way for me is to do a lot more exercise, only it’s a bit time consuming if your pushed for time .

I generally do about 10000 steps per day, but if the golf course is open I can do another 30 odd thousand over a Saturday and Sunday.

Keto and Intermittent Fasting have proven health benefits, including weight loss. Dr Jason Fung is a good man to listen to re the science behind it. Loads of his stuff on YouTube and his books are available on Amazon.

The trouble with me is I know the theory and stick to it during the week, but I like a beer at weekend. That and the associated snacking on crap undoes the good work from the weekdays and I'm back to square one on a Monday. I'll learn one day!

Maybe...

I’m a week into the ‘Noom’ weight loss programme and finding it easy to follow. All done on your phone.

If you're out exercising, you're not filling your face.

If the golf course was open, I'd only need to play a hole a day, by the time I've finished zigzagging from tee to green

Being diagnosed last year with T2D I now always have to watch my carbs (carbs are the one thing that turns into sugar in your body). Bread wise, always stick to a decent grain/seeded bakery bread and NO processed bread; this will ensure a lower GI. Weetabix and Greek Yoghurt (I do use a few blueberries on top too despite misgivings on fruit) for breakfast. Small lunch (maybe a Greek salad) and lean protein for dinner (usually based around chicken, turkey or fish). There are a number of 'lower carb' potatoes on the market now and in small quantities are OK. Avoid pasta and white rice like the plague (substitute for cauliflower rice - home made)....

Just put an order into these for the first time they do everything bread, wraps, pitta etc will see what the stuff is like. 👍

Carbs are the ‘killer’ for sure. Lost 2.5 stone in 4 years after watch a BBC programme “The truth about carbs“ Been a bit slack this last lockdown and put about 4lbs on due to reduced exercise and dare I say it eating the no no foods ...... bread-pasta-rice-potato. Used the (free/basic) My FitnessPal app religiously for 2 years which gave me good knowledge and awareness of portion size. I cut my alcohol right down but consumed it only on Friday and Saturday - stuck to this during lock downs as well.

The link will take you to the BBC programme which isn’t available anymore on iPlayer.

Eat foods as close to their natural state as possible, read the packet if its got more than 4 different ingredients in it don't buy it.
