Knee pain starting in your 40s

Any one else had this, perfectly healthy go swimming and to the gym 5 times a week.

All of a sudden my knee is killing me. Something feels wrong.

GP advised it is a age thing, in my 40s

I remember really hurting my knee playing football and I could not walk for a few days about 8 years ago then I riced it rest ice elevation and support.

Half thinking about getting some scans done, second opinion or a physio. Don’t want to burn money. Any guidance would be appreciated.

I’am not perfectly healthy i don’t go swimming nor do I go to the gym.

But both my knees are still perfect, oh I’am in my 60’s. 😉

Had several ops on knees years ago
I’ve been taking fairly high daily dose of glucosamine with chondroitin since then. I get the odd twinge and a bit of aching but my knees generally feel really good
Also regular exercise in the gym to keep the leg muscles strong

I had similar issue and despite a number of scans, etc nothing was found. Went to the physio and she suspected muscle damage from an old injury when I was in my twenties and that my kneecap was floating. Gave me some simple exercises to build up damaged muscle and a couple of months later the pain was gone.

Worth going to the physio as first call.
Agree Physios are under rated, and I would rather have an initial diagnosis of a possible muscle problem from a Physio than a locum doctor.
I am with Holroyds and the physio with the group costs nothing and is an ex Pool player. He can refer you to a specialist if he suspects you need more than physio

I've had 'knee pain' since I was 19 y.o.
Crash in Daimler Dingo Scout Car did both my knees in, stitches under both knee caps.
Hasn't really stopped me doing anything, football etc. but always there..
Getting worse in my old age, always use a walking stick now.
That's life.😒

Seems everyone has a different story, neither right or wrong. I played football & squash upto 45, then had an arthroscopy on my right knee and was told by the surgeon no more football, squash or running. Bought a bike & started cycling a 30 mile round trip to work most days. 2009, saw an advert for the Fleetwood triathlon and thought I'd give it a go. Never looked back, realistic expectations, I'm never going to win a race, but still competing at 59 and still generally top 25% in races and still cycle everywhere. I take glucosamine and turmeric & ginger supplements and remain convinced that cycling is the key to relieving knee pain, but hey, we're all different:)

Will be more to do with spending time on knees at swinger parties.

Had a few knee problems recently and can't recommend JAM physio enuff
You wont regret going to see them

Going back to my post Mrs Insider had an MRI scan (£250+) and saw a consultant (£200) but only after advice from the physio. Both those things have had to be paid for privately.
In my case he didnt think that course of action was necessary so I haven't gone down that route , yet.
So I still think £40+ to see a physio is an economically more sensible first thing to do
I suppose every case is different. I on the other hand spent hundreds of pounds on a physio to treat my back. Only months later I had a scan which indicated that the physio was making the problem worse and I ended up having surgery to fix the back. I then had the physio to get me mobile again after surgery.
I agree it gets expensive if you have to go private to get something done quickly but when the pain becomes insufferable what do you do!

Did my ACL back in 2010 playing Sunday League. Had to pack that in so switched to gym work. Just wear and tear and old age I reckon! Hope you get sorted pal 👍

63yr old here; I developed pain in my left knee in my 40’s, not long after my right knee followed suit.
I was extremely into my health and fitness, still am, swim, run, cycle, gym, circuits, fell walking, climbing mtb … “you name it I did it” (don’t name parachuting 🪂😱) after 6yrs with the RM I was in “the mode”
Tried most of the methods suggested here to keep me active. Cycling became my main activity as running became too painful.
I guess they carried me quite well, however 10 yrs ago I had a HTOsteotomy on my left leg to ease the bone on bone impact and resultant pain.
Last Monday I was back under the knife for a partial right knee replacement and removal of the HTO plate on my left leg, ready for a partial or full knee replacement later in 2022.
Do what you have to to keep active 👍 Mrs NFF and I have a 10 day cycle tour planned for Easter in Dalriada 😃👍

Remember listening to David Eyres once talk about the fact that when he past 40, he'd struggle to climb the stairs most nights!
