For those of a certain age and who liked live music, a trip to Lancaster Uni in the 70's and 80's was a regular feature.

A new book has been re-published - When Rock Went To College

Its a 384 page softback book with loads of concert reviews, posters, flyers and lots of other interesting stuff.

Mine arrived today, looking forward to reminiscing.

Its £30 and postage took about 2 weeks. Link below

WHEN ROCK WENT TO COLLEGE

Brilliant. Looking back on my Uni days, every week there was a gig on and I can't remember any that wouldn't resonate even today. Cheap as chips to get in too.

Yeah, I know I've probably said this before but I remember my first gig at Lancaster Uni was to see 10cc in about 73. Always remember the tickets said 'the Great Hall' and when I entered I couldn't believe how small it actually was.

WHEN ROCK WENT TO COLLEGE
I bet that's a quality read👍🏻

the undertones and stranglers for me as well - we were the last ones left at the undertones and had a kickabout with them in the hall!

First gig there was Thin Lizzy what a night!
From memory Peter Gabriel when he went solo
Lynard Skynard (pre-mountainside encounter)
Bad Company
Teardrop Explode
Backstreet Crawler (with wonderful Paul Kossof on guitar)
AC/DC
The Great Hall was a fantastic venue and also responsible for the persistent ringing in my ears thanks to being indoors and compact yet still using speaker bins that would deafen Wembley Stadium!

Happy happy days

Yeah, great venue and memories. Saw Eric Clapton, Albert Lee on guitar and Gary Brooker on keyboards! Chas and Dave were warm up band. Also saw Bad Company.

Uni concert gigs in the 70s were both quality and affordable. Saw the Stranglers, Genesis and Black Sabbath at Lancaster and many more at Leeds Uni

Some great memories of Lancy Uni gigs, Bad Company, Clapton, bonkers barmy John Otway & Wild Willy Barrett, Buzzcocks,Stiffs tour,Two Tone tour, Steele Pulse, and loads more, but The Jam were amazing, how just 3 guys could deliver such energy and sound was unbelievable,we were sweating our cojones off! as Bottle mentioned re deafening,my ears were ringing for days after that gig! Great times!

Alex Harvey Band 1972..

I took my younger 16 year old brother when I was 19..trip from Fleetwood via buses...arrived and everyone was sat on the floor like a hippy event..As soon as the band came on stage, I along with a few others stood up ( of course ) ..while people at the back were shouting sit down?!..The stage wasn't that low !..When all of a sudden a Newcastle Brown Ale bottle was thrown from the back and hit me on the side of the head...I halfed blacked out in pain and fell to the floor..while my brother looked terrified and trying to get me back on my feet..I do remember coming around to the start of Faith Healer I think. What a show! and managed to pat Zal on the back as they exited stage on my right...We then got to the bus station but had missed the last bus....call to Dad didn't go down well..

Lancaster Uni Great Hall was a top venue in the 1970s and 80s.

Wishbone Ash
Dr Feelgood
Hawkwind (Stacia never mind the music)
The Who
Pink Floyd.

How Barry Lucas managed to get those bands on for a couple of quid a ticket .....l will never know.

Even the Student Union meetings and Student Union Strikes/fights were entertaining.

Then there were the discos at St Martins.

Life was never the same after college.

I got the first edition of the book and it brought back some great memories

I saw a few there, but sadly towards the end of the period covered by the book.. I managed to see Costello, Altered Images, Teardrop Explodes, Boomtown Rats, U2, Slade (the Christmas party gig where Noddy dressed up as Santa for the finale) and the like.. was a great venue and not too far to drive.. luckily I had a mate who didn't mind driving, so it was usually a good giggle!

Only saw a handful early eighties, had to wag school to get the bus up. The Jam setting sons tour was by far the best for me. Still had loads of concert t shirts and posters from back then, moved house and went to get them from my Mothers, only to be told "Ive thrown them out" devastated I was.

One of my biggest regrets in life was not going to the Lynyrd Skynyrd gig.
Brilliant gig, was it one of their last in the UK prior to that tragic accident? Watched a great documentary on Sky Arts a month or so ago about LS and showed a clip from Knebworth in 76 when they blew the Stones off the stage, great concert with a decent line up!

I am no good at doing links, but there was an article in the Lancaster Guardian on 15 May 2020, noting 50 years since the Who had appeared and featuring other groups and photos from the book.

My mate blagged us both into the Dressing room for autographs after the Blondie gig there late 70s. He took a photo of me with a very sweaty Debbie which I have to this day.
I blagged me and four others into the 1st Slade gig I went to there.
One of the roadies let us in as I missed out on the tickets when there were released.
I showed him my Slade tattoos to prove I hadn't just jumped on the bandwagon after the had taken Reading by storm.

Just for you 😍

I graduated from Lancaster in the summer of 1970. The Great Hall accommodated the end of year examinations beginning in 1970 as well as acting as a concert venue. Before then concerts took place in the Bowland College refectory and the atmosphere was electric to say the least with very close proximity to the bands who were performing.

I saw the Thompson twins there. First concert for me out of Blackpool and couldn’t fault the venue. Brilliant atmosphere
