Lytham Festival Cancelled

We have talked about Shady who were brilliant!

BUT can I raise all to a better group ‘The Gutter Band’ who still remain one of the best bands I have ever seen - and I watched them a lot
already mentioned them Mike, they were great (They did do a lot of Gary Glitter songs though which is a bit unfortunate now). I loved the Star on a Saturday night back in the day.

Wow !!! Reasonable chance I was there that night, who remembers Mow the head doorman? Big West Ham fan and a very scary guy

I do remember there was a doorman who always wore a large overcoat, even in the summer. I recall visiting one night when he was greeting everyone with a large dog by his side; I think it was a Rottweiler.

That could have been Barry Eastwood the landlord. He always had a big thick long coat on, a character. Think he ran the Wheatsheaf on Talbot Road after his stint at the Star.
I always remember The Star opening it’s doors the very night after it had had a fire. There was almost still smoke in the rafters. God knows how the got away with it.

Fairly sure it was Mo no w and yes he was a cockney f**k but he must be dead by now otherwise I wouldn't say so. I did one maybe two gigs there as cover and tried to explain he was meant to protect me. not sure I got throug, he had that dead eye look.

No, it wasn't Barry, he was thin with a big Rod Stewart-type haircut and glasses. You're right, he did wear an overcoat to make himself look bigger, though. When Barry gave anyone bad news, he always made sure he had two bouncers with him.

No, this guy was about 6ft, quite stocky, and had the look of the gangster Dave Courtney about him. Must have been late 30s, early 40s.

I doubt it was him, Barry was a really skinny bloke, knew him well and often had a couple of beers with him after the place kicked out. Loads of Pool supporters went in there, I just remember it being super friendly.

My old mate Gary Samberg drummed for Shady. While we're talking old Gold Coast bands, what about the Smeggo Brothers? Quality.

Yeah he died years ago

Feel sorry for the organisers, artistes and fans but got absolutely no sympathy for those thieving robbing food and drink stall holders who charge extortionate prices!
The prices are set by the organisers. The vendors have to charge what they’re told to, to stop one undercutting another I guess. They’re restricted in what they’re allowed to sell too, only certain drinks etc.

Exactly this. I’ve a bit of experience with it and you’re set strict rules on pricing, what you sell etc. by the organisers, and they take a percentage of your takings too.

Just as an aside Spudbros reckon they lost 12k with the cancellation of Alanis Morissette - I know people on here won’t have much sympathy with them for obvious reasons and it won’t matter too much to them, but think of the other vendors who don’t have the social media pull they do. Tough gig.

I remember a guy on the door a few times called Pete Price?, I think he worked for Steve Hill. He once invited a guy to hit him on his rubber nose as he said he wouldn't feel it as he had no bones left there.

You only have two very small bones in the nose that start the nasal passage.
It's mostly made up of cartilage.

He had everyone in there in stitches when he showed what he meant by pushing his nose right in. No support there at all, he was a character but you wouldn't argue with him.

Wonder why Lytham Festival receives so little national coverage?
Decent acts and yet not seen any TV coverage or anything in the national press.

Went on Thursday and last night.
Surprised that there were mixed reviews on Stevie Wonder.
Yes it was a slow start and unfamiliar opening songs. No “Uptight” and several other classics but still has the voice and great backing band. I give it 8 out of 10.
Last night in full agreement with ansdellmania

Stevie was fantastic. 9/10. Opening songs unfamiliar? The first five were classics from his best albums.

Went last night , Simple Minds were good but Texas were absolute class . Sharleen Spiteri enjoyed herself just as much as the crowd did . Brilliant.
Can't disagree with that. I primarily went to see Simple Minds who I thought were very good. But Texas, who aren't really my cup of tea, stole the show. Sharleen Spiteri was absolutely brilliant.

You need to be a real Stevie Wonder fan to know some of them tracks.
I know he cannot perform all his hits however “Happy Birthday”, “Part time lover”, “Uptight” would have motivated the crowd.
He did little on his harmonica apart from ( Beatles) Love me do”
Several walked out as he did his opening speech and performed unfamiliar songs for many.
Still a good night and that’s why I gave it 8 out of 10.

I am a fan since the early 70s. A fan of Stevie Wonder knows those tracks, they are from his best albums. We all wanted other songs, he has so many. I would've liked Pastime Paradise and As, among others, from Songs in the Key of Life, at his peak. His 'classic period' was the first half of the 70s, that's widely accepted. People walked out early on? Clueless people, if so.

Stevie Wonder was good, but he probably did too many covers of Sly and the Family Stone, which most of the crowd didn't know, especially with the last song to finish.

The biggest problem I found was the end of the show. Most live acts build to a climax at the end of the show, but the choice of a Sly Stone cover
and the mass exodus of people trying to beat the rush ruined the ending for me. It's a shame if anyone had told me when I used to drink in the Queens pub in the 80s that Stevie Wonder would be playing outside on the Green, I would have thought them mad. Of course, I would have found them even crazier if they had suggested no one would be allowed to smoke as well.

He finished with Superstition and rolled it into thankyouforlettinme, the second Sly Stone song of the night, iirc. I thought it was a great finale, and Superstition is probably his biggest hit.

I just thought it would have been better to go into Another Star for the final song, which he has done before, as most of the crowd didn't know the
Sly Stone's song, which he was playing because of his recent death.

Could you hear Jim Kerrs singing clearly last night? Last 3 times I’ve seen them I’ve not heard a word he’s sung!
