Macron or Le Penn?

Apparently the French are regarding the election as a vote between cholera and the plague.
Not exactly a great endorsement of the candidates.
Don't know which candidate is which though
Good point about Le Penn, if she wins I wonder if rumours of Russian tampering starts?
“Cholera or plague”. A very appropriate choice but a sad one.

The time will come when this populist nonsense will go back into the sewer it emerged from. In the past it has taken a war to see them off. It might come to that once again.

There hasn't been much good news on the politics from lately. The projected result seems like a decent outcome though. Hopefully MLP will crawl back under her rock.
The truly sad element to this is that France has (for most people) little choice BUT to re-elect a very average President who has done precious little in his first term. Not dissimilar to the Boris/Corbyn or Trump/Clinton situations where it really was Hobson’s Choice.

I couldn't agree more. It seems spectacularly mediocrity is not the exclusive preserve of British politicians.

What makes Le Pen a fascist? Genuine question as I don't watch the news any more...

Well they dont have a lying , egotistical , uncaring,
hooray henry , slob in charge
I like the idea that Macron isn't egotistical. 😂

Predictable result that was obvious from the the first round vote split. The choice was right or far-right which excludes a lot of voters and doesn't say much for the state of French politics.

I suppose it’s a term some have become used to saying these days because any party having right wing views is now deemed a fascist party, I agree though first time I’ve heard someone call her a fascist.
Just been watching the BBC news 24 and even at this early stage of the election results they are saying Le Pens vote has gone up somewhere between 8-9% from the 2017 election results.
So are we now saying the fascist party is growing in popularity in France?

She's way further to the right than the likes of Farage here. More EDL.

Supported Putin over the invasion of Ukraine, and would stop the sanctions of Russia if she gets in. Nothing to do with her party being funded by Russian loans...

Johnson vs Corbyn or Biden vs Trump all over again
Not sure how it’s possible that all across the world, absolute muppets vie for the top jobs.
It’s like a choice between scabies or herpes.
Who is going to do the least damage?
Something needs to drastically change. Not so much the cream rising to the top as the effluence in a septic tank.

It's interesting to note that facism has been rife in France since the early 20th Century, pre WW1 to be correct.

Once again it seems to be going down the road of a divided country, again as it did pre WW1 and WW2.

People go on about Le Pen being a fan of Putin etc but I read an article only yesterday that France and Germany have both been selling arms to Russia even after the invasion of the Crimea.

Total shambles.

Nobody on here will want to acknowledge that Jaffa.

One of the ongoing dilemmas for France is that most people agree that considerable structural change is required within the system, pensions, tax, etc yet when it comes to their turn to bear the cost they put on a yellow vest and close the roads. It was every thus.

My mother in law, French, retired from teaching at 50 and has been drawing her significant pension now for more years than she worked, she is ninety-seven. Her head agrees that this is unsustainable, 14% of French GDP goes to paying pensions, yet her heart and her yellow vest think otherwise.

Macron is slowly turning this around, a more entrepreneurial, less union controlled country is emerging but slowly. He needs to pick up the pace over the next five years and offer more hope to the left behind if he himself is not to become one of those.
