Martin Tyler: is he the worlds worst human being?

I think it’s fair to say that a commentator, whose trade and living comes from words, is well past his sell by date if he can’t express his thoughts clearly in a pre-planned interview.

He is far from the worlds worst human being, but he is 76 and he is stopping other people getting opportunities.

He said this on the Today programme on Radio 4

Tyler, widely regarded as the voice of the world’s richest league, was reminiscing about how much the game had changed since 1992, when he said: "You’ve got to remember that football was in a bit of a crisis at that time. We weren’t that long after Hillsborough and other hooligan-related issues as well."

That can be taken two ways depending on how you link the words “hooligan related”. He could well have meant there was Hillsborough on the one hand and there were also other separate issues which were related to hooliganism.

It's right though isn't it? It was in a bit of a crisis... with Hillsborough - a horrible part of footballs history and there was lot of 'hooligan related' stuff going on at the same time. I don't read it as him saying Hillsborough was hooligan related?

'We weren’t that long after Hillsborough and other hooligan-related issues as well'

Pretty clear what he meant.

Maybe so…but is it a persecuting offence? I suppose it is to one part of the country.

Those who died were absolutely not at fault. Could the same be said of others - whether officials or not ?

I haven’t heard the interview so can’t really comment but if there was a pause ie. we weren’t that long after Hillsborough, pause, and other, hooligan related incidents as well. As I said I haven’t heard it, just speculating. I may be completely off the mark and he could be an absolute arsehole.

So the Prem saved football in 1992 did it Martin?

Prior to the prem coming in, crowds were up for a 6th successive season. Hooliganism was hugely on the decline. He knew what he was saying for a man who is paid to use words. If you actually listen to his commentary when Liverpool are on he sounds like a family member has died when they score. Loads of comments on that on Twitter too and it's very true.

Can't stand the bloke. Well past his sell by date. The sooner he fucks off the better and take the AND ITS LIIIVE thing with you.

Is he your version of our Ian Chisnall?

Nah, just one clumsy sentence in an interview, he obviously didn't mean any harm, doubt most Scousers will really care, it's hardly up there with The Sun.
A lot seem to care. He has a history of it with them. My closest mate is a Scouser and showed me some stuff from RAWK I think and another forum. Pretty clear what their feelings are.

He meant it

Appreciate SATWs post contained an element of the dramatic but whilst not a physical crime it was a dreadful vocal crime so the op was justified.
I genuinely have no idea what he has done or said, can you enlighten me ?

I read the article, I hope he meant there was Hillsborough and also (but in no way related) some hooligan stuff, rather that what he actually said... I must admit, I'd never considered him a controversial figure prior to this though, just any old commentator. Have I missed a heinous past?

Made a slip up whilst getting interviewed live who gives a fuck.
He's doing aa decent job now on the current game.

Yeah, sorry, it was supposed to be sarcastic 👍

I assume the MSM and the always offended will be looking to destroy him then 😄

That is exactly how I read it - that there was Hillsborough, then there were some other separate hooligan-related incidents. You'd expect a man of his experience to be more careful around such a sensitive topic. But I don't for one minute think he was claiming Hillsborough was hooligan-related.

Tyler is past it and 809 years old and someone else could be doing his shift etc

BUT I wouldn’t bury him for a few words he has said……I’m sure he didn’t mean Hillsborough was all down to hooliganism because he’s never said so before

PLUS if we were famous would our every utterance stand up to scrutiny?….I know I’d be locked up in The Tower of London for just what I’ve said in the last 3/4 hours

Just blame the BBC again they get blamed for everything else.
What he said is clumsy but you can see in the words that it came across wrong. I have a bit of sympathy for him but I'm sure the Scouse always the victim mentalities will jump on him and he'll be relieved of his post soon.
I actually like him, not that he's one of my favourite commentators but that he's still around and very sharp for his 76 years and doing his job. That's to be admired and the Sam Matterfaces of the world coming behind him do absolutely nothing for me.
