Matty Virtue

I fairness, Virtues role in this formation is exactly that, work hard, break play and give the ball to the 2 loanees. As much as some prefer Spearing in that position, I think he's been poor this season and maybe the rest will do him good for the run in.

Virtue had two belting efforts last night and beautiful cross that Madine made the wrong run for. He's not perfect but he's not a problem. I like him a lot. Lots of effort, very little ego.

Agree that virtue was good last night.
I felt a bit sorry for him in the first half hour of the second half.
Renan was pulled out to play wide left to protect McDonald which left virtue and DH in the middle against 3Bolton players meaning that they dominated possession.
It was that way until Spearing came on and Fonz was shifted to the left, we then got a grip of midfield when it was 3 v 3 in the middle.

I think he is a good player for us.He drives forwards with the ball,he spreads the play,he reads things well and will go in and win the ball. You often find that with long legged midfielders especially they have this ability to drive past players.

Virtue strikes me as the type who is a down to earth lad and a proper pro. Trains hard and always trying to improve. He has impressed me when I have seen him. I. Missed last night but a few seem keen on the Ronan, Virtue, Dewsbury-Hall combo in midfield

I've got a mate who works for LFC TV and used to cover their kids. He says Virtue was kept on at Liverpool for a while simply because he was such a good pro. They knew he wasn't going to be the next Gerrard but they wanted his attitude to influence other kids. He says he's a lovely down to earth lad.

I think he could be a real asset if he's given time, and a set role to grow in to.
I'd start him over the pedestrian Spearing from now on every week.

I'm a huge fan of Virtue and after only 1 season as a senior player he'll get better. However, I disagree with those bashing Spearing. When we're playing well I agree we're fine without him, but when we're under pressure, I think he's vital. I think in those games our shape falls apart without him and we look completely headless. I think Spearing puts pressure on the opposition which others fail to do, and breaks up their plans better than anyone we have.

Agree about Virtue, I think he has great potential. Where Spearing is concerned, I think generally you're right but I do think he's been in poor form recently. Maybe the break from playing will have done him good.

With a few good meals inside him, I think there’s a great player here who we can really work with and mould over the next few seasons. Thought he was excellent last night and as much as the loanees are getting the plaudits, he was the stand out for me.
I agree. He was my MoM. I like the Keith Southern analogy too. He drove through their midfield at times and gave us other options of attack. One for the future - yes, but also one for right now.
