Memories of Layton

We all know that Layton is the true beating heart of Blackpool don't we?

An absolute treat in today's Gazette for those old enough to remember, although I have to say I don't recall Bunnock Hall.

Thanks for posting this. When this photo was taken I was a kid living in South Shore, the bus takes me back...We moved to Layton in 1969.

I was looking at this last night, some great photos.
Anyone have any info on Bunnock Hall? I’ve never heard of it, looks like it could be Layton Rd/ Collingwood where Layton woodworkers is now?

Just to add, my Nana lived on Onslow Rd at the time that first pic was taken. What a treat it was making that long journey on the bus from SS up to Layton Institute most Saturdays.

I waited on at Leyton Institute for a while.
Got more money in tips that wages😂
Busy every night of the week and some decent (if not well known) acts as well.
Good memories.

Although I lived in Town Centre, one of my mates lived on Broughton Ave, and another on North Ave. So often in Layton.
Also, as a Telegram Boy, went to Layton and environs many times.

I thought top of Mansfield Rd, where the Windmill pub was.

Great thread and a superb observation and hopefully we'll be getting our own mayor soon-you could be in the running for that along with @20togo .

Just had an update from the BASIL (real) community committee, and they've updated the criteria for lifetime membership based on London's 'Bow Bells' principle.

Anyone born or grew up within the sound of the cellarman's keys at the Victory on Caunce St is a true Laytonian, which would include @Big bertha2 's mate who lives in Watford.

*this may also include anyone catching the no:9 bus to the shops in town too.

I was just guessing by the shape of the road. Is your answer based on prior knowledge, mate, I’ve never heard of it before and can’t find any info?
Funnily enough, I lived on the short stretch of Bispham Rd by the Windmill for a couple of years at the end of my schooling.

Not deffo, but it looks like it's there. There is a sign before what I think is Westcliffe. The road looks like it has spurs to it from tracks in the road. The Mansfield Rd (I think) one would be consistent with the lay out before they altered the junction (70s?). I can't think of anywhere else slightly elevated around that area which looks the same.

To be honest, I wasn't sure that the Victory was even in Layton but although not born near there, I grew up very nearby and am proud to accept my "Laytonism" or whatever it is you are offering.

I will be getting behind 20's in his quest to be the mayor and I will certainly be putting an "x" next to his name if I am still entitled to a vote after moving elsewhere in the town.

A couple of my old roads are on those pics. Onslow Road and Grange Road. Also lived off Torsway Avenue and near Devvy school so I've lived in a few places in Layton

Layton was fantastic as a kid. Used to knock about on Kingscoate Park and loved the place. Quite iffy in some parts of where I lived now which is a shame.

I lived on Onslow Road from 1958 - 1984 right at the very top where it runs parallel with St. Walburgas Road. In fact it used to be St. Walburgas before they built the main road.

I'd say bunnock Hall is the row of cottages on the other side of road just up from sarginsons. There were three together set back from the road as I used to deliver papers there. More or less opposite the top of Hollywood avenue.

Basically in between Bailey crescent and hillside.

I moved to Layton in October 87, bought the house with my other half before we were wed, the pair of us are still in the same house with our grown up kids . Happy time have been had, and hopefully many more to come !

I grew up around Torsway Ave.
It was a great area for kids - the Flashings, Stanley Park, Woodland Gardens and the Lakeway/Torsway allotments all within spitting distance.
I lived in Brockway Ave off Torsway Ave and went on my own by bus to Devi Rd school aged 4 while my twin sisters who were older went to Layton school.
Nowadays kids go nowhere without being dropped off by their parents.

My mate’s dad had the garage and petrol filling station in Westcliffe Drive. Occasionally I’d go with him with the takings to the bank in town in his red e type Jaguar, quite a bird pulling machine!

I grew up in Lyncroft Cresc from 57 until 76. Went to Layton Primary school. Used to play football most nights on the school playing fields. I drove round the old streets a few months ago and what a mess it looked. Weeds everywhere.

Been living in Layton for over thirty years now. It's still a busy thriving community whilst acknowledging you have to take the rough with the smooth.
Gave up on the gazette a long time ago though.
I lived above a shop on Westcliffe Drive for a couple of years in the early 80s. Handy for Maguire's chippy
I remember Maguires running the chippy. Their boy was the footballer wasn’t he?

there was a building matching the shape of the Bunnock Hall photo at the junction Bispham Rd/Poulton Rd back in the early 1900's

Frost was on Highbury Avenue I think
I think that’s probably right. I remember after coming round the corner at the windmill it’d either be the second or third on the left.

Funnily enough I’ve got a letter from Mrs Frost to my mum with her papers that I was reading just the other day. My parents ran the children’s home on Furness Avenue on Grange Park for about 8 years so got to know the Frosts quite well as they’d take all the kids there.
