Memories of Layton

Had a great childhood in Layton. Lived in Gisburn Grove (near LaLa 😊)
Played kick-can in the back alley. Alleys were made for games like that
Walked to Christ The King school Grange Park from 5 years old
The Layton gang built a bonfire each year on the grass at Kingscote and then raided Grange Park at night and set fire to theirs
Went to the chippy on Onslow Road for chips and scraps
Old building where the health centre now is was owned by Chadwicks. Grange Park gang booby trapped it so that a stack of bricks fell on my head when I opened the door. Ended up in hospital, but could have been fatal.
Was paper boy for the newsagent on Layton Road and was the first to get the new Queenstown Flats round. Delivered papers to Pool winger Les Lea and used to chat football with him.
Also went to Birtwistle dentist on Westcliffe Drive. Really nice man, but he died in the explosion at the water treatment plant at Abbeystead.
I played football for Layton Institute and on the Flashings for Symbol
Played snooker for the Institute and for RAOB club on Lyncroft Crescent.
I've lived in many places since but my heart's still in Layton

I lived on Onslow Road from 1958 - 1984 right at the very top where it runs parallel with St. Walburgas Road. In fact it used to be St. Walburgas before they built the main road.
I remember a very steep hill at St Walburgas ? where they used to take poor souls to do a hill start on their driving test

I was born on Leaford ave off Mansfield road in 63. Went to Layton primary remember the old windmill pub and the dentists, he used to give kids a bar of chocolate.

Yep, been playing in the league for RAOB at fives and threes for about ten years now. Bit of a strange place but love it in there.

I was born in the house next to the cemetery then when I was 5 moved onto North Ave moved up to Claremont when I was 8
A proper Laytonian given there were no maternity units in the area, and to my knowledge there wasnt at Devvy Road hospital.

Not often we get someone with royal blood on here

My mate’s dad had the garage and petrol filling station in Westcliffe Drive. Occasionally I’d go with him with the takings to the bank in town in his red e type Jaguar, quite a bird pulling machine!
I remember the old chap who owned it having a Rolls Royce, was on the corner of Lynwood and Westcliffe Drive. He had a son who brought Lada's to Layton! Anyone remember that...

Layton had a great community spirit. Brought up near Layton Institute and went to Layton Primary. I remember Mr Partridge headmaster and his white line. Mr Padmore using a hard corky cricket ball playing lunchtime cricket in playground.Health and Safety what was that pish?
Mr Hibbert who assaulted 1 girl in particular.
Dentist Frost who gave you a bar of thin Cadbury chocolate. Having extractions using gas what a horrible experience.
Playing in the brickworks at back of Mansfield rd and putting coins on the railway line there.
Leaving bike all day unlocked at papershop on corner of Onslow rd/Westcliffe and picking it up untouched.
Willoughby chippy 10 penny worth of chips.
Playing football at the Flashings/Kingscote Park. The worst pitches ever.
Layton Institute terrible pub singers blaring out of open club windows in summer...drunkards pissing in our garden.
Still got my 1970 World Cup coins collected from Esso garage on Westcliffe drive.
Music teachers Miss Spafford Mansfield rd and Miss Williamson.
St Marks Whit walk and cubs and scouts Mrs Holmes and Arnold Latham.
Some happy days...

Blimey that’s virtually identical to my childhood except the music teachers. I was in the church choir where Padmore was organist and choirmaster and in the Scouts although I was in the 5th Blackpool Cubs who met in that little hut at the junction of Newton Drive and St. Walburgas. I’ve always thought that Hibbert wouldn’t have got away with his “behaviour “ today

Do you remember at Layton primary school they used to let us sing Onward Christian soldiers as a treat at assembly

Any of you Torsway lads remember Ronnie Talbot?
Or Mr & Mrs Hopwood? Mr Hopwood worked at the hospital for about 40 years.

Yep, bought my first house in Layton, and was there early to late 90’s.
Great little hub with a lovely community vibe. Thriving around that time.
Both my girls attended Layton Primary and I really couldn’t fault it at all, excellent school.
Brilliant pictures 👍

I do I think he passed away a good few years ago as did his wife Pat. They had 2 children Steven and Karen. I left Layton for Thornton in 1972 but Pat was good friends with my Mum
Yep.Was a regular at the Tyldesley club and snooker. Worked on the planes for BAE. Pat worked in shoe shops. Passed away only a couple of years ago. Lovely folks.

Old Laytonian I think you are Stewart...I was the one with the Polish name.... unfortunately not related to Robert....

Mr and Mrs Murphy had the post office on Torsway up to the early to mid-eighties, I had a paper round there along with the Grinsteads.
I didn’t move round here until October 87, and the Hunters were there by then, although I haven’t a clue when they took over .

Dave and Linda had Torsway chippy, then they move to somewhere in South Shore (Highfield Road possibly) to run another chippy I think. We lost contact with them after that so it could possibly be them. They had 2 kids, a boy and a girl. Think the lad was called Stephen but I'm not too sure now

Dave and Linda Hunter had the post office, then moved to Highcross, where I fitted a Velux roof light for them. Rex and his wife, I think she was called Anita had the chippy when I moved there, when he sold up they moved into their house near the Highfield.

I played for RAOB Rangers back in the '70s.
Later became FC Rangers. Loved the Inter Milan kit. Even did a tour to Bottrop in '77. Coach departed from Layton Cemetery at midnight.
Was a member of the Layton Institute but strangely never set a foot inside the RAOB club.
Remember outside toilets at the old windmill before it was demolished & rebuilt. Now a Tesco.
