Memories of Pool v Gillingham

Some high scoring games.
Think they have won on last two visits.

One of last games before lockdown when we equalised in 91st minute after being a goal up from early doors.
We gave a corner away in 95th minute and they scored a sickening winner.

Been some freak scores in past seasons.

Anyone have any memories?

Remember David eyres fighting with their goalkeeper and getting sent off.

Sorry wrong post.
We all thought Crewe, Wimbledon and Plymouth we’re home bankers.
We had doubts if we could grind out a result against Peterborough.

Funny old game!

Was it Gillingham when we didn't give the ball back after they kicked it out and we scored straight away?
Yep, it was John Murphy who scored. A couple of minutes later their centre half tried to elbow Murphy when challenging him for a high ball.
Fortunately he missed otherwise he would probably have seriously injured him . Worthington ,our Manager , was unrepentant later.

Gillingham away

Think it was 3.0 to us Steve Bushell scored a cracker

Stayed the night in Romford and sampled errr Essex night life

Went there once - one of the dullest places in the world - stuck in the middle of a dreary housing estate.
Can anyone name anything that has ever happened in Gillingham!

Mainly the 3 3 home draw in the late 80s(?). 0 0 at half time ,we scored 3 quick goals to lead 3 0 then it was their
turn and they scored 3 !
yep, Peter Taylor going mad deep into injury time when they put the ball out for an injury and we didn't give it back and crossed it straight into box to get an equaliser.

Last game of the season in 18/19 where we had returned after the boycott.

There was a big thing about preventing a pitch invasion, saying the players will come out at the end if everyone remained on the terraces. Gillingham were 3 nil up at half time so it certainly stopped anyone from pitch invading!

I think you're conflating two different games there 20s. The 3-3 I'm sure we were three up and they equalised late on.

The other game with the throw in incident was a 1-1 draw I think, and the goals were much earlier.

There were 2 X 3-3, one the last game of the season around 2005, the other when they came back from 3 down was late 80,s

maybe.I'm sure the incident with the throw in was an injury time incident from which we scored. Whether it was to make it 1-1 or 3-3 then perhaps that's where I'm not so sure.

Recall Gillingham at home (2005/6) Blinkhorn and Parker scored to keep us up on the last day of the season 3-3 draw. Fans on pitch with about 5 to go as Parker went through on goal- he wasn’t happy (as per!)

I remember the on loan keeper we had from Blackburn let a back pass bobble over his foot and into the net to make it 3-1 which was very late on, and then the cavalry came for the last 10 minutes and they got two last minute goals from successive corners to equalise. I came off that game never understanding how we let the 3 points slip away

It might have been the reverse fixture down at theirs we he came off unhappy too. I was sat in the corner of the scaffold stand by the players tunnel and Parker had just been red card for kicking lumps out of one of their players shins as the ball went out for a throw. He came off effin and jeffin. I was fuming at the time but makes me chuckle now about some of the characters we once had 😁

Anyone watch the Play Off final between Gills and Man City.
Gills were coasting to the Championship 3-1 up with a couple minutes left.

Talk about Karma!

Matt Dickins! I'm pretty sure that incident was a 3-1 home win against Leyton Orient. Unless, of course, he did it twice! 😂

I think Muggleton was the on loan keeper in the 3-3 game in ‘88 ish. And there was no back pass bobble goal in that game. I remember we were coasting at 3-0 and Ellis took MOTM Mike Davies off, and we then went to pieces in that all too familiar way.

That's right! Cheers.

yep, that's the game I'm remembering with Murphy scoring. Was it Simmo putting the long deep cross in? Must admit thought it was in injury time though. Obviously not.

It was Bardsley who crossed the ball for Murphy to score having received the ball from the throw in
about 20 mins or so before the end. Gillingham having scored their goal in the first half. The result a 1-1 draw

I was at the game in 1988. Absolutely coasting 3-0. There's high quality video footage on YouTube if anyone wants to re-live the moment 🙄

The Eamonn O'Keefe penalty incident at theirs. They banned the ref from their ground after that one. Ellis brought him on as sub to take it as we'd just missed one. He wasn't ready so took ages to remove his tracksuit. Banged it in of course. Think he was just back from injury.

Colin Greenall surprisingly joined Gillingham for a Decent fee..
He was expected to join a higher level club instead of another 3rd tier club.
When we played them (1987) he was continually booed by the Pool fans.
Think they beat us 1-0 and were involved in the first ever play offs.
They lost in the final to Swindon.

No doubt he will be next to Chissy on Tuesday.

Why ...what's happening on Tuesday?? ( Smiley Face)

This Easter is confusing. I was convinced it was Sunday when I woke up this morning.
Last night I was surprised when Corrie came on then realised it was Friday.
Well yes the game is on Monday however they play every Tuesday until end of season.

similar here, friday i thought was saturday and today woke up thinking it was sunday

That 3 3 still haunts me to this day....never liked them and never will....always been a horrible team and from all accounts a horrible place.

Played them on 20th October 1990. I got married that day and told the wedding car driver in London to get Radio Kent on route to the reception. We won 2 0.

1979 as a 16 year old, me and a pal mick Docherty went to the ground hoping to cadge a lift to Gillingham away. As luck would have it a coach arrived with some handy lads on board. We got on the coach and gave them £9 each return. An epic journey ensued where we were introduced to beer and ‘other substances’.
Got to the Priestfield Stadium and went to a local pub with the older guys. Ten minutes prior to kick off a plan was struck to go in the open away end with no colours.
Mick and myself went with the moment and before long there were 30-40 pool fans in the away end.
We were losing 1-0 with a few minutes to go when we were awarded a penalty. On mass we all jumped up in celebration and the crowd scattered around us. Police reacted quickly and formed a cordon around us.
The penalty was taken and Stan McKeown tucked it in the corner. 1-1 which prompted further celebrations. Final whistle sounded soon after.
A few missiles headed our way and it was scary for a while but we survived and headed back to our coach.
We lived to tell the tale and 9 hours later we were dumped on Bloomfield road.
Happy days!
Met Stan Mac after his playing days and reminded him of that penalty.

That 3-3 conceding 3 in about 8 minutes has scarred me.

I never, ever feel settled even when we are cruising.

Strange how a freak result can affect you.

Here’s a relic from the first time we played Gillingham in a league fixture, 1978 remember me and me mate muttering fuckin Gillingham! as we trundled up the South Stand steps to take our seats, at least we won 2-0 but little did we know 30 years of hurt awaited us before we were promoted again to the second division/championship!! 5DC2087B-ACCF-45E8-A7E9-297A6873BC6E.jpeg

I remember Colin Greenall playing in that game wearing a white headband ala Steve Foster style, and Tony Cascarino looking head and shoulders the best player on the pitch.

I remember going there on a Tuesday night, probably mid 80s and it was very foggy, think we lost. Looking at the results we lost 2-1 on Tues 4 Nov 1986 so I guess it was that one.

Yeah, I must be getting mixed up with another game of the same era, I’ve just watched the 3-3 on YouTube. It’s the old memory you see, it ain’t what it was 😆

Remember a league cup game around 1966 when we beat them 5-2.

We faced 4th division Darlington the next round and lost 2-1.
Top flight club then.
