Memory of a great footballer.

In 1957/8 I was working on the Counter at Manchester Post Offices. Lived with my sister at the time.
A lad I worked with had a motor scooter and we would often, in the evenings, go to a reachable match.
One evening Huddersfield were at home to Stoke City. We went along. Huddersfield were not that good,
however they had this thin slip of a lad with blonde hair. He covered every inch of the pitch, never stopped running.
Huddersfield lost 0-1.
The young lad was 17 years old.
Name? Denis Law.
From that day, to the end of his career I followed his progress.
One of the best players I ever saw.
BTW, my mate was a City fan.

Nice work Dave.

Probably one of the things I've 'missed out' on by being a Blackpool supporter from the early 80's onwards is seeing some of the worlds best up close and personal.

I've done a couple of England games and obviously we had the PL season too - and from those I saw how good players like Gary Lineker, Zola, Ashley Cole and Didier Drogba were in the flesh, but not too many others sadly. It's only when you see these players perform live that you truly see how they compare with their peers.
Same applies to other sports too. It was a (begrudged) privilege to watch Steve Smith bat at the Old Trafford Test last summer. You could see someone operating on a different level to everyone else and it's good to know I can say 'i saw him play and saw his genius'.

The odd thing is, as much as i love football and watching football players; I also really don't regret a thing. I'm just as happy having seen Briggsy throw a snidey elbow that the linesman missed, Tony Ellis bend another into the top corner or see Dave Bamber rise at the far post to nod in a David Eyres cross. You go with what you know....

He was sent off at Bloomfield road when United came and visited us on one occasion but we still lost but I remember him well, yes he was a great player, scored a few against us over the years unfortunately.

Yes remember that trio of Law, Best, Charlton all great players in their own right.
I remember reading when Law joined Huddersfield he was training with the first team
and he nutmegged the first team centre half, he was quickly advised that's not a wise thing to do.
A truly great player.

Bobby Charlton lashed in a pile driver at Bloomers in 1971. It was disallowed because Law was goal hanging, as usual. ☺

Remember going with my cousin to a Bury v United match around 94, United had this little ginger forward player who notched a couple. His name, Paul scholes.

it’s funny when Blackpool beat united 1-0 at Bloomfield Rd in the lancs cup mid 90’s United had beckham and the rest of the class of 92 playing...little at that time did we know.
