Men in the Box

Was it me, or was Yates always pulled out wide yesterday and when he was, did we over rely on Madine, who as Chis and Brett said in commentary, seems a bit far away from the likes of Hamilton? Are we almost back to a one man Gnanduillet situation in the box?

Was noticeable how Crewe (on the very few occasions they got forward) used their wide men far more effectively and actually were more potent that we were. I just feel we might need to mix up our style of play occasionally and go wide with a quick ball in to the box in which case we need both Madine and Yates in the box and not somewhere down the wing.

It would also help if Hamilton could produce a decent cross or pass. Unfortunately, we see little of that from him

i said yesterday that we play very narrow across the midfield and tend to play very wide across the front three. Brett on the commentary was talking about how disconnected the strikers are so they dont have many interchanges. if there were runners into the box that wouldnt be a problem, but there isnt so any final ball has to be pin point accurate to the one player in the box against three or four defenders. There are times when we need to get in a quick cross like Feeney was doing last year, but we dont really have that type of player anymore either but even if we did there aren't the players in the box who could capitalise. i think NC has a few quandries to answer, but im still more confident in this team and its capabilities as opposed to the previous few years.

Good post. At the moment it seems we are like three separate units, defence, midfield and attack. Certainly the latter two need to find some way of linking up with each other and posing more of a threat. Hopefully Critchley sees Woodburn as some-one who can be that creative player.

It may be that NC dropped a bollock in letting Feeney go on the terms he did ie we are paying most of his (v decent) wages anyway.

I’ve always seen Ben Woodburn as as someone who always seemed to play as if he had a squib up his a*se. Perhaps as a youth at Liverpool, he had to play like that to be noticed. I hope that he hasn’t changed, because right now, Pool could use an injection of that all action enthusiasm.

Do we still think we’re playing with Gnando in the side as I’ve not seen many examples of where crosses, corners or free kicks have found anyone in a tangerine shirt! Re-think needed?!

Agree completely, hopefully Wodburn will partially address this problem, but I would also like to see Robson getting into the box more, particulalrly when the defence is shored up with Ballard and the Viking.
