Most overrated band ever...

Yes The Beatles, I have to agree. I mean, apart from being the biggest selling recording artists ever, having the most No. 1s ever, cracking open the American market for British artists, being the only recording act ever to have the top 5 places in the Billboard top 100 chart, being the only act to have more than 3 Christmas No. 1s in the UK (4), being the only band in which every member has had a solo US No. 1 and which has had 3 members achieve a UK solo No. 1, being responsible for reinventing the way that recording studios are used, introducing the concept of holding concerts in sports stadiums (and rooftops), being the first artists to turn an LP into a distinct concept - as opposed to simply a collection of songs, being the only artists to date to have a number 1 single three times with the same song (I stand to be corrected on this one), and to have written and recorded the song most covered by other recording artists (apart from Happy Birthday) in the world.
Apart from that - yeah, crap.
No one said they weren’t famous or popular just that they were and are massively overrated.

Its always a thorny topic as one mans classic is anothers drivel but for so called rated bands i will go for radiohead, and stone roses, just never really got any of them but i have to throw in anyone who disses the Beatles should be taken out and shot, im just saying.

There are quite a few bands I don't like but I can understand why other people do like them. However I have got to say Oasis are hugely derivative, ripping off tunes and riffs from other bands.
You don't have to be original to be good. As long as those debts are recognised then, fair play.

I think it's about a band who get a lot of critical praise and 10/10 reviews but don't seem that special on closer examination. They don't need to be *bad*, it's just they don't seem to justify the fawning. That's why I went for Radiohead - I actually really like some radiohead stuff and I *really* like the latest Thom Yorke album but when I hear a whole Radiohead record, I just don't get what is so special about it in comparison to similar stuff. It just seems I'm missing the point of most of the tracks somewhere.

I feel similar about say, REM - all their records seem to be 2 killer tracks and 9 fillers yet I can name records by similar bands that are all killer no filler, that have nothing like the critical acclaim or sales.

I think I'm probably doing Queen a disservice. I really actually dislike some of their stuff, but I kind of get why they're rated for what they are.

XTC are the most underrated not overrated !

The Police
U2
Queen
Any Prog Rock, ie Yes, Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

I think Wiz is winding us up with The Stones, surely.
They started well but by the early 70s they'd jumped the shark and have done nothing for nigh on 50 years while continuing to coin it in.

Here's a thing. I've nver 'got' the Stones, but oddly, I really like Exile on Main St.... but only that record.

That's a strange thing.

I can't think of any other band where I only like one record, but *really* like it, and have made little headway with any others...

That's me with Van Morrison. Astral Weeks superb, anything else, not that fussed.

Not having this td. The Bends is a perfect album - every song a work of art
Don't get me going on those Coldplay cockers though.....

Along the same lines of I can understand why others like them, Queen!
Just not for me, I appreciate the spectacle of their live aid performance, and Bohemian Rapsody is strangely entertaining in small doses but I would never play one of their albums.

Thank god for that someone has put the Sex Pistols down before me and throw the whole of Punk in the bin with it also.

But OK Computer is one of the finest albums ever made.
