My take on today (longish post)

Much improved, but with plenty to work on is how I'd describe our performance today.

Firstly, the work rate of the team was far better in my view than it has been. Against Wycombe in particular there was very little desire or determination and it was pleasing to see that today was entirely different. There is only one way to get out of a very poor run, and that is to work bloody hard. I think we did that today.

I'm one of Gnanduillet biggest critics, and I still think we should be looking for a more mobile striker to replace him in summer. However, I thought today he played as well as he has done all season. His control touch seemed to be much better for some reason, and mostly he was more decisive and released the ball faster. He seemed to enjoy the different style we were playing.

I thought Taylor Moore was very good in the heart of defence, not only commanding in the air, but great reading of situations, once or twice his positioning was excellent when it needed to be, and he has a bit of pace. I actually think based on today (granted one game isn't enough) that he's an improvement on Tilt. It just goes to show that we should never panic if we sell a good player - I recall Peter Clarke being sold to our opponents today, and we replaced him with a certain Ian Evatt. The worry of course is that Moore is only on loan, but the point is that good players are available if we have decent scouts, and ambition of course.

On to the two new boys in midfield. Both were superb and it's extremely difficult to choose who was better. If pushed I'd say Dewsbury Hall as I think he covered more ground, but both had skill, great first touch, good off ball movement and could pick a pass. Those questioning us selling Guy need to look at these two and admit that they are quite a big step up in class, and today showed the level you need in midfield to compete at the top end of league one and beyond. Guy is a decent player, but Ronan and DH would give him the run around. Again it's a shame they're both on loan as they're exactly what we need.

Couple of negatives. Heneghan worries me. He's had a serious loss of form and it's hard to understand. I suspect once the team gains confidence, these mistakes will stop but they need to quickly as they're game-changing howlers. Similarly, Spearing has been in poor form. Southend nearly opened the scoring today from him losing the ball in a terrible position. I hope he turns it around in the remaining games as we need him.

Overall today was encouraging in two respects. Firstly, it showed me that Grayson wants us to play better football and I think the players we've had just haven't had the required ability. This is not necessarily an endorsement of the manager, just that with better players there is the intent there to play more positive, passing football it seems.

Secondly, our scouting team seem to have done a decent job in January as the players we've brought in are undoubtedly a significant improvement. It bodes well for this summer when hopefully we'll be trying to source players of a similar ability but on permanent contracts. I'd be worried if we'd just brought in players to make up the numbers but these new lads are exactly the level we should be aspiring to. Hopefully this has demonstrated to SS what is required in this league.

A few final thoughts - the flags look excellent, the pitch looks great especially at this stage of the season, and the southend goal was brilliant and deserved the applause that it got.

It's amazing what a win does for confidence, and I think we're very capable of climbing the table again during the remainder of the season. UTMP!

Very good summary and agree wholeheartedly although I cant remember Heneghan making errors. Got a bit tense last 15mins but that's understandable when there is a losing streak situation going on.

Hardly anything that I disagree with in that post save the comment about Guy who I think is league two level at best. I would add that it was Turton that nearly cost us the game with another howler...not sure what’s wrong with him generally as you can tell he is actually a decent player.

Ah I may have mistaken Heneghan for Turton for the bad mistake today, although both have been in poor form I think. That said, so has the team but the trouble is if there is anything negative to take from today, it's that we are constantly making some terrible individual errors. The one today would 100% have seen us one nil down if we were playing one of the better sides in the league. Hopefully as we gain confidence, we can cut them out.

The comment about Guy, you're basically agreeing with me in that he wasn't good enough for us if we have ambitions of competing at the top end. It was absolutely the right decision to let him go.

It was the right decision to let Guy go as I don’t see him as a decent player. I’m guessing you rate him more highly than I do?

with time to gel what I saw today would be a match for every single team in this division and as you say it will probably be our individual errors that will stop us going on a significant run.

Great post OP mate👍

Yes I think he was decent, for example I remember him playing well at Gillingham earlier in the season. But he doesn't have the quick feet of our two new guys, or the movement off the ball, and I think selling him will prove a good decision. I do reckon he'll be quite successful in league 2 though.

To give Larry a bit of praise, I think history will show he made good judgement selling Guy and Thompson, and keeping Virtue.

Agree 100% with the O/P. Ronan and KDH are both class and in a way make Spearing look a bit laboured in comparison.....not sure if he's carrying an injury or not. If Spearing is injured then Virtue should be given the opportunity to start alongside the two loanees. Also agree about Heneghan and Turton. Heneghan was commanding in the air but seems to have developed a bad habit of lunging into a tackle often with the wrong foot. Turton looked nervy and hopefully Howe will take his chance when it arrives.

Presumably Howe missed out cos of the limit on loan players in your match day squad. If he had played, the entire back four would have been borrowed, with a keeper on a contract til the end of the season. Two Borrowers in midfield. Very few of the starting XI are likely to be with us next season. Spearing and Madine, anyone else? Feeney?

A good summary and I hope that a win, at last, will give the team the confidence they have been lacking. It was a shame that Madine came off injured, as he had caused havoc with Gnands, who showed his skills beautifully in the game and then fluffed his chance of a hat trick, showing the enigma he is. I just hope the injury to Madine is nothing serious.

Onwards and Upwards.

Very good match summary BFC 53 particularly about the scouting team. They will already be looking at replacing the loanees (and possibly others) with permanents in the summer at a similar if not better quality in keeping with SSs ambitions.

Good stuff 53. I did think Heneghan was a lot better yesterday but what formation do you think we played? I don't think anyone responded on the other thread.
Voy: Howe is not a loan player. He's on 2 & half year deal + 1 year option.

Of course. Temporary early Sunday morning lapse thing.

So where the hell was he?!

A good OP and replies.

I'd forgotten about the limit on the number of loan players in a team. It is, clubs are allowed to sign up to eight players on loan but can only select a maximum of five loanees in a match squad. Since Heneghan, Moore, Ronan and KDH are likely to be the first names on the team sheet, it means a choice between Marc Bola and Teddy Howe** for the final spot. It's a shame really, but the rule is fair to stop teams of loanees being fielded.

** Edited to add - I'm talking rubbish about Howe. He's ours on contract. 😳 Howe in for Turton, every time.

Agreed, however I feel spearing needs replacing with the younger more mobile Virtue and Turton offers nothing going forward and nothing going back for me, I don’t get the love in with him.

Very good OP. I disagree with you about Henaghan - I thought he was very solid yesterday on the defensive side of things. His distribution needs to improve though. The kid playing alongside him set him a very good benchmark in that regard.

The one where Larry and most on here seem to think he’s an automatic pick

Yes I think I confused Heneghan for Turton when thinking about that terrible mistake in the first half that nearly saw us concede. So in that case Heneghan was ok, although the defence really needs to cut out these individual errors, because we have been really getting punished for them in recent weeks.

Voy, Teddy Howe was brought in on a two and a half year contract !

Good OP thought we looked a bit more fluid, helped by a better midfield. Regarding Gnads he was an asset in his own box heading away corners which they seemed to have a lot of. Will be interesting team selection Tuesday.

OK, I know Gnanduillet did some good defensive headers, however, why doesn't someone stay on the halfway line (should be Gnanders job) when opposition have a corner?
10 men back means the ball comes straight back in
Stupid.

Somebody really quick who can round the keeper!

Good summary, though wasnt it shaun Barker who replaced Clarke? Disagree re Turton, I have only seen him play one decent game, cant pass the ball to save his life. Hoping the new lad from Reading will replace him Tuesday

We sold Clarke in Summer 2006, and signed Ian Evatt on loan initially on 1st Aug 2006. We signed Shaun Barker on 2nd August 2006. So you could say we signed both or either to replace Clarke!

youve forgot Fonz never leaves!!

great summary, Turton did have a mare , Henaghan should be trained not to pass a ball further than 10 yards and he should be ok.
I also thought the goalie added a new dimension, maybe he,ll get sussed but played like a sweeper, modern tactics eh SG?
