They've announced that they won't start their season without fans. So unless the "elite stadiums" designation is removed the clubs will lose furlough support soon and presumably will have to lay staff off.

It's possible dozens could go to the wall, and soon, I would have thought. Hopefully there can be some kind of re-think, but it's not currently looking likely.

So how does that work if say fans are allowed back in around March time? Will they bother, could they cram a whole season in from March-July maybe or will they just scrap this season. Suppose the only salvation is now Macc have gone under that no EFL clubs will have been left with that challenge. A few big clubs down there though you have to feel sorry for.

What is the elite stadiums designation, and why have they decided not to start without fans?

And couldn't they stream games and charge fans to watch it? Better than nowt surely.

I assume some have massive overheads, buying/paying players above their means, I think the whole pyramid may be about to collapse

If they do have have massive overheads above their means then their problems aren't really Covid related - as with Bury and Macc.

Absolutely, it's been coming for some time, Covid has just added to the inevitable demise

Maybe but I'm not sure? We haven't seen National League clubs going under so far. maybe the dam was about to burst, I really don't know.

There’s bound to be extreme cases, but also clubs that have behaved responsibly and are going to suffer. As I mentioned on a thread yesterday, it’s as though these clubs are being treated as some sort of amateur leisure activity rather than the fully functioning businesses they are. They need help from the govt and they simply aren’t getting it.

They have been holding on with the prospect of re-starting in October. I think we will see the whole football pyramid collapsing before Christmas.

Sadly everyone is asking for help from the Govmnt, (that's us by the way). From concert venues to butty bars, everyone wants some help, I'm no financial guru, but I think the magic money tree is dead....

Ps I don't blame Bale for taking £600k a week, I blame the muppet that offered it...

I don't see why they need help.

Let the fans in and put measures in place to manage the minimal CV risk of those numbers being in an outdoor stadium. Ensure the clubs stick to this and get on with it.

Getting back one topic, I know that some individual cubs are making counter-representations and want to make a start on the season behind closed doors. It is possible that the NL may have a re-think, and I will be surprised if they aren't coming under immense pressure (or being bribed) to do so. We'll soon know either way.

I think people are under-estimating how many clubs might not be able to get through the next six months sans furlough, if that is what happens. Even without this, I can think of at least three clubs in the EPL who might not make it as far as Christmas.

I know it's people's livelihoods at stake and sympathy has to be shown for them. But I find it obscene to think of elite sports clubs being given any sort of tax payers money to bail them out of any sort of financial crisis. Listening to the guy on the radio moaning about how Gloucester Rugby club needs funds and how all the Premiere rugby clubs ran at a loss even before the pandemic.
If all those clubs including football lose money year after year pandemic or no pandemic then surely they going to end up out of business one day anyway. Sports as with any business has to be sustainable the last 6 months has just shown how the games we love and enjoy have been built on sand without any proper regulation.
I think this is the beginning of the end of them sports as we know it and a return to the days of the 50's,60's and 70's..

EXACTLY!!! so the way forward is to live within your means, which means not over paying players/managers/agents etc, this may bring the whole "elite" sports down to the real world...

Makes me shudder to see that Gareth Bale earns "?" 600k a week, which is of course subject to deductions poor chap. ☹

Some discussion in the corridors of power around financial assistance for sports institutions including elite sport. What's the betting that the Premier League ask for a large percentage saying the trickle down benefits will reach lower league football.

All together now, "Always look on the bright side of life!"

I think that's an extreme view.

No club should run at a loss (unless they have some rich benefactor who can invest but even then I think there should be limits so they can't walk away).
