New variant in South Africa

Don’t need to dust off mine, I’ve kept wearing one all through. Looking after number one and my small way of protecting others. Can’t see the problem myself. If doing that saves one life and avoids tougher restrictions, then it’s worth it.
“Small way of protecting others”.

Couple of points on this.

Do you honestly think a fabric mask is going to protect others but the vaccine and the booster won’t stop spread?

Have you considered that wearing a mask when there’s nothing wrong with you isn’t saving any lives, because (drum roll)… there’s nothing wrong with you ?

Yes, I’ve considered all of that and no, none of us know we aren’t carrying the virus unless we test almost daily. Do you?

WHO said yesterday that if 95% of people wear masks, that would save 150,000 lives in Europe between now and the spring.

as I said, I can’t see the problem, it’s better than lockdown.

Ok so on your points. Do we just constantly wear mask now then on the off chance we are carrying a virus for the rest of our lives? That is not rational and an unhealthy logic.

Re: the WHO? Why have Germany’s cases spiralled when they have had a strict mask mandate?

There’s numerous vids of Whitty and Van Tam and Fauci and co, all saying masks don’t do anything… they are just pure theatre.

This shit never ends with your outlook and philosophy. Every time a variant comes we get restrictions again on the off chance we might have something wrong with us.

It’s turned into a cult this nonsense especially when people are double and triple jabbed too 🤣

No problem, you crack on, I’ll do my thing.

That'll probably be the final nail in the high street.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who just won't go shopping - everything can be bought online and / or click n collect.

I'm still off to Mexico next week thankfully. 👍

Spot on

The clown show have no idea what they are doing. They keep telling us to do the same thing over and over again. We have the highest death rate and highest number of daily cases per head of capita in the world.
Vaccines, mask wearing and lockdowns have made no difference at all except to destroy small businesses and line the pockets of the corporates and MPs.
It’s already been stated that the best form of defence against it is to catch it so let the thing rip through society and get it done with. Trying to keep people sterile from it clearly doesn’t work.

So we don’t know if the vaccines are any good against this variant, but we really need to get our 3rd vaccination as soon as possible?!

I’m not an anti-vaxxer or conspiracy theorist but that doesn’t add up.
I think the ‘as soon as possible‘ is incase the vaccine does offer protection from this strain.

Obviously if the transmission of this mutation is high then that will help.

We have almost double the highest tests per head of population than any other country, which explains why we have the highest cases per head. As for deaths, there are at least 25 countries with higher deaths per head of population than us.

i don’t necessarily disagree with herd immunity, but two things; first we have to know how serious this new variant is, second, I doubt those who have lost loved ones would agree with, let it rip.

“On Saturday, health officials confirmed that a case of the Omicron variant had been detected in Italy.
The business traveller had flown from Mozambique, landing in Rome on 11 November and returning to his home in Naples.

Five of his family members, including two children, have also tested positive. All are now isolating and have light symptoms.”

Light symptoms …… let’s hope 🙏🏻

This is only going one way, another lockdown.

Scare tactics by the mainstream media will ensure enough public backing.

TTV for home games here we come. 👎

The media’s questions last night were horrific.

Why aren’t we locking down?? Why aren’t we going harder and faster with restrictions?? We don’t even know much about the fucker yet?? Apart from the actual place it’s come from telling us it’s nothing to worry about it.

Scum of the earth they are. If we miss out on going games it will be a a fuckin joke.

If we do this shit never ever ends and weirdly some people are all for it. I won’t be following any nonsensical rules where possible.

Too many will comply, they have been brainwashed into believing everything that’s been said regarding covid but many don't see that they've lied about literally every single political promise they made.

Lot's of toddlers in adult bodies in our modern society.

I don’t think we will lock down at all.

I think it’s only the uncertainty regarding the vaccine response that is causing concern.

In my opinion it’s highly likely the vaccine will do a good enough job. None of the experts are saying it definitely wont. It’s mild precautionary measures for now. And lets face it, if Johnson did absolutely nothing at this juncture then there will be many accusing him of having ‘ blood on his hands ‘ should the absolute worst scenario pan out and we have no protection so far against this strain.

I’m not overly concerned at all, and there is no point in being so right now.

Exactly this!

Let me just add a bit of info about masks to the mix and the theatre of it....

'Standard face coverings are just "comfort blankets" that do little to reduce the spread of Covid particles, a scientist has said.

Dr Colin Axon, who has advised the government on minimising the risk of cross-infection in supermarkets, accused medics of presenting a "cartoonish" view of how how tiny particles travel through the air.
He warned some cloth masks have gaps which are invisible to the naked eye, but are 5,000 times the size of viral Covid particles.
"The small sizes are not easily understood but an imperfect analogy would be to imagine marbles fired at builders' scaffolding, some might hit a pole and rebound, but obviously most will fly through," he told The Telegraph.

Dr Axon said the public need to be offered a wider view of the science behind face masks, rather than the "partial view" of information being pushed by medics over their effectiveness.

"Medics have this cartoonised view of how particles move through the air - it's not their fault, it's not their domain - they've got a cartoonish view of how the world is," he said.
"Once a particle is not on a biological surface it is no longer a biomedical issue, it is simply about physics. The public has only a partial view of the story if information only comes from one type of source. Medics have some of the answers but not a whole view."
Dr Axon, Brunel University's senior lecturer in engineering, said that the true mechanisms involved are best evaluated through science.
"When the particle enters another body it returns to a biomedical issue but the mask debate is about the particle journey," he said.
"Masks can catch droplets and sputum from a cough but what is important is that SARS CoV-2 is predominantly distributed by tiny aerosols."

Dr Axon said that medics were "unable to comprehend" the miniscule elements at play, adding: "A Covid viral particle is around 100 nanometres, material gaps in blue surgical masks are up to 1,000 times that size, cloth mask gaps can be 5,000 times the size."

So masks are largely theatre to make people feel safe and so the government can be seen to be doing something.

Pretty much everything you have said is incorrect and finished off by a ridiculous statement.

Yup we had it again this morning on BBC.
Expert from Cambridge Uni talking about the new variant being even more spikey and even more contagious.

BBC pushing the fear buttons and deliberately trying to get the expert to say let’s lockdown.

Expert was basically pushing for the non vaccinated to get jabbed and stated vaccine will reduce any symptoms.

BBC then once again asked about Lockdown….

What’s the obsession with closing down the economy and making peoples life hell? Destroying businesses, increasing debt, unemployment and misery?

The country is vaccinated. The over 50s are triple vaccinated. The under 50s have a good % that have already contracted Covid and the majority are vaccinated too.

Yeah and although it was mentioned in passing by whitty, why not the focus by the media on the evidence I provided in this thread.

That yes the spike protein changes and people can be infected but the protection is long lived due to b cells, t cells and whatever else, these cells recognise proteins inside covid itself not just on the outside and are on alert to multiply rapidly upon infection.

So protection from serious disease etc is a lot harder to escape from and would mean significantly changing itself away from being covid which apparently is really unlikely.

So the reality seems to be that real protection is long lived if not forever.

So masks are largely theatre to make people feel safe and so the government can be seen to be doing something.
This is it. Germany imposed ‘medical masks’ and ‘cases’ still spiralled.

We’ve got people making their own from Marvel and Disney t-shirts and it’s been labelled by some as “saving lives” & for the “greater good”.

I agree with this, I think the worst thing is the media campaign & their language regarding this new “horrific… “worst yet”… “deadliest”.. variant.

Many people have been through the mill, financially & mentally. They’ve done their bit and are ready to crack on with life and accept it’s risks. Constantly banging the drum to lockdown and using headlines, stories & deliberately utilising negative guests, as the BBC did yesterday with Susan Michie, is disgusting for the nation’s mental health.

The irony is, in a couple of months they will be showcasing a ‘Be kind’ and ‘Mental Health Matters’ campaign after they’ve deliberately done the above to people when many really don’t need that worry.

Complete and utter wankers, but the worst thing is, it’s deliberate.

If anyone doubts the above, just remember why and what caused the petrol ‘crisis’.

So the BBC should only interview people who you agree with?

Finally, someone else actually agrees that the media are a massive part of the problem here.

So the BBC should only interview people who you agree with?
*sighs

No they shouldn’t, but if you think Michie is the go to person after stating it was ‘careless and reckless’ to open back up in July, when we’ve all enjoyed normal lives for the past 4 months, then I give up. She didn’t want life to return to normal. She didn’t want large crowds so the football we’ve enjoyed since August was a no-go. You ok with that?

It’s no shock she thinks we should go “harder and faster” with restrictions, she probably doesn’t celebrate Christmas or never has, which if you look into her background is well known.

The point is, let’s have people trying to assure the nation and use language to calm them till they clearly know what’s happening.

Rather than make half of it shit themselves as highlighted on this thread.

South Shore

I wasn't referring to anybody on here.

In my opinion there are far too many people who are not willing to move on and are happy for everything to be closed down while they sit at home and still get paid - be it 80% or full pay.

I am not suggesting that the virus doesn't exist but it seriously effects the old and the vulnerable and let's not pretend otherwise.

** AVFTT caveat head switched on **

I do know of at least one person who doesn't fall in to the old or vulnerable category who lost his life but unfortunately people are taken from us too soon because of all sorts of reason.

When somebody loses their life in a road traffic accident, should we close the road down and get everybody to walk to work the next day ?

I just feel that it is time to move on.

Apologies for my generalisation in my original post and if there are not a lot of folk out there who are happy for us to lockdown then I was wrong.

Yes, exactly this but there are far too many who can't wait to lockdown.

Come on then, name some of these people? I don’t know anyone who wants a lockdown. I know plenty who are doing their best to be sensible and do what they think is the right thing to do. I know people who are worried about the virus but want to live life as normally as they can. I also know people who are blasé, won’t get vaccinated, won’t follow any rules, because…… well I don’t really know why because! No one wants lockdown again though.

The petrol crisis was down to Brexit.

Are you ok?

Ok let’s roll out the communist Susan Michie.

She’ll help everyone mentally & her track record on calling for more restrictions has been brilliant so far.

Merry Christmas.
I'm fine thank you. So to sum up, you want the BBC to only interview people who agree with you??.

I refer you to my response to South Shore (above).

I was generalising but if you wan't a specific name, I will give you Susan Michie - thanks Kebab.

I am of the opinion that there are far too many people who are perfectly happy to sit at home and get paid - be it 80% or their full whack if they are lucky enough.

I am not stating anybody specifically on here and getting personal but in my opinion there are plenty - both in and out of AVFTT world - that don't want to move on.

If I am wrong, I am wrong but I don't think I'm on my own in holding such an opinion ?

They’ll always be academics and so called experts who will call for a lockdown, but the average person like you and me don’t want lockdowns, we’re not even talking about lockdowns, that’s what the media are calling it, and we all know the media love a headline, it’s wearing masks in shops and on public transport and putting some countries on the travel red list. I can’t see a problem with any of those things and I have never stopped wearing a mask in the shops or on public transport.

If we go into lockdown again, full lockdown, which I just can’t see happening, then the Covid shit will have had to have truly hit the fan and the vaccines don’t work and people are dying like they were in the winter or worse and hospitals are full. If that happens we’re fucked.

Well you and me can certainly agree that we don't want lockdowns.

Personally, I think that there are plenty happy enough to lockdown and while some may be influenced by the media I don't think they all are.

I'm thinking we just disagree on how many who would be happy enough to lockdown.

Sorry but just to add - maybe I shouldn't ? - I don't think wearing silly masks makes any great difference and the 'experts' can't even agree on that.

** AVFTT caveat head switched on **

I always wear a mask whenever the Government advises me to do so and I have no problem with anybody wearing one all the time.
