New What we all watching / recommendations thread?

A shout out for 'Camping', Julia Davis' dark comedy on YouTube. She is delightfully saucy and evil at the same time and the neurotic woman who treats her husband like a scabby dog with leprosy is ace. All hell breaks loose when the score disco biscuits at the local pub. Really good, 6 episodes.
Just watched the first episode Jesus that bloody woman she’s enough to make you go celibate, the one Steve Pemberton is with I’ll add.

It’s similar to Detectorists in the sense that it’s generally mild & funny with a few cracking one liners as you say. We watched 3 episodes last night & I’ve only just stopped chuckling at the Brazil nuts. 😂
There are definitely similar threads and relationship dynamics between the two that's for sure.

Disneyland Handcrafted 2026.
Documentary using previously unseen 16mm film footage and original audio recordings from the 1950’s. It’s a fascinating watch, charting Walt Disney’s vision to build Disneyland completely from scratch in the middle of Californian orange groves. The film covers the year long build, highlighting the enormous financial risk and the incredible craftsmanship of the hundreds of people involved. Highly recommend!

Just finished Coldwater which i'd recorded a while back. Enjoyed it but it built to a tense finish and then imo let you down with a sort of "Is that it moment?"

Couple of decent war films for those who are into that type of thing - Warfare on Netflix and Kajaki on Prime. Both based on true stories in Iraq and Afghanistan respectively. Typically brutal but realistic.
I keep meaning to watch Warfare and I'll add Kajaki to my list, missed that one completely.

I watched The Rip last week, cop drama which was really good and nothing like I expected it to be as the Trailer was really misleading. Matt Damon & Ben Affleck

Yeh The Rip was great - kept me guessing.

Saw really nice gentle comedy called A Little White Lie last week. Reviews did it a disservice imo. Another film that keeps you guessing. Think it was on Prime.

Started watching McKenzie Crooks new comedy last night; Small Prophets, as expected it's another delightful, whimsical comedy int eh vein of the Detectorists, funny and sad, lovely characters including Michael Palin as the elderly dad who is in a nursing home suffering with dementia. McKenzie Crook can do no wrong as far as I am concerned.

Finally starting watching this. I don't think it has as strong a character dynamic as The Detectorists thus far, but I'm enjoying it for sure. He's good at bottling that British eccentricity isn't he, Mackenzie Crook. And getting that good balance of funny/sad as you say.

Just finished watching Seasons 1 and 2 of "Silo" on Apple TV. Amazing series with a great cast highly recommended. Can't wait for Season 3. Best thing I have seen for years. Check it out.

EPIC: Elvis Presley In Concert. Baz Luhrmann has done his thing with restored footage from early 1970s Elvis Vegas residency to give you a flavour of what it was like to be there at the time. Catch it on IMAX. Epic

Started watching The Rip, but there was just too much swearing for no real need. They overplayed that to the extent we just looked at each other and said 'fcuk this' and turned something else on.

Shame.

I'm going to finish off How to get to heaven in Belfast, which has been great and will start Dirty Business on CH4 about the pollution in our rivers, looks like it could stir a reaction.

Into the third episode of Dirty Business.

This could be bigger than the Post Office scandal and so it should be.

For fans of the FBI series following the cancellation of international & Most Wanted last year CIA has started.
Its a spin off from FBI.

Season 2 of Paradise has also dropped the first 3 episodes.

Highly recommend Mr Inbetween (Disney+). I’d never heard of it until Ricky Gervais was asked his favourite all time series/fim. That’s easy he said…. Mr Inbetween. With The Office and Afterlife a couple of my favorite series this was good enough for me. Binged it in 2 days. It’s about an Aussie hit man called Ray. Dark humour, sad, gripping. 3 seasons

Looking forward to Gone, 6 part psychological thriller starting on ITVX tonight. David Morrissey stars, fingers crossed it’s not a dud.

Three gems to watch. Firstly ' Small Prophets' on BBC I player. A gentle, humourous mini series.
Next one ' How to get to Heaven from Belfast'
This is on Netflix, a funny, quirky and clever murder mystery from the writer of Derry Girls.
Last but not least 'Young Sherlock' on Prime.
Directed by Guy Ritchie so you know what to expect. If you liked 'The Gentlemen' then I'm sure you will enjoy this

Saipan......The story of Roy Kean walking out on the Ireland team at the word cup.
None of the Irish FA or the players come out of this with much dignity and Jason McAteer is portrayed as a complete dick
Steve Coogan plays Mick McCarthy to a T....He comes across as a complete knob
Great scene where he's taking to Roy Kean and explaining that he (McCarthy) is as Irish as him......?....In a Yorkshire accent.

Beauty with Ashton Kutcher has also been very good
It's told out of sequence and with different episode lengths and changing actors in the same part
it's only later episodes that everything starts to make sense and it really takes a weird turn when the lead actor becomes......something strange.

66 mode on

one mistake fine but two! It's Kean with an "e". Keane.

66 mode off.

Don't faint, but started watching Broadchurch last night. Brilliant and the scenery is amazing as well.

I think I thought it a Dr Who spin off for some reason? God knows why.
David Tennant and Olivia Colman together would always make a winner 👍
So I’ve started Mr Inbetween, as recommended by a poster above, as Ricky Gervais called it out as his favourite series of all time.
It’s a strange one. Australian, dark comedy, crime drama.
Centred around the life of an Australian hit man, but the hit man plot line makes up for probably only about 40% of the story.
I’m not a fan of Australian TV productions, or programmes with a heavy dose of violence, but I am finding it strangely addictive viewing, and most of the thousands of reviews absolutely rave about it.
Disney plus, all 3 series available. Probably more of a favourite amongst males, but I’m liking it enough to stick with it.

We enjoyed a couple of Australian series. Mr In-between was better than we expected, combining the life of a father separated from his daughter, whilst working as a hit man. Some pretty funny moments too.

The other was Rake, a comedy/drama about a lazy barrister played by Richard Roxburgh.

Back to the Uk. We have just finished Young Sherlock (Amazon Prime), a very entertaining series directed by Guy Ritchie. A very good watch

Young Sherlock sounds a bit odd to me, but will try I think.

On Aussie stuff. The last one I (not we) enjoyed was Shannon's Mob where the obligatory pretty girl would take her top off in the first 10 minutes. All very pervvy.....seriously it was Friday night post pub fodder and terrible.
