Nick Kyrgios - entertainer or nutcase?

Today, as in Stuttgart, Kyrgios has been calling out racist abuse from the crowd where none existed, abusing the umpire and a line judge and smashing the ball out of court. The guy seems to continually walk a narrow line between playing great tennis and completely losing his bottle. It's as if he can only play when he's lost control. Certainly, false racism claims is a dodgy thing to be doing in this day and age. Is he good for the sport or a nutter who should be banned?

I agree with you that he only seems to play well when completely riled up. Just rude, plus there's an element of being off putting for the opponent.

It's a tactic against lower ranked players, watch him against the top four or five and he never does it.

He's a bellend when playing but quite like the fella off the court.

A right spoilt brat at times but in what can sometimes be quite an earnest, pure sport, you almost need characters like him to add a bit of flavour.

Christ, I hadn't read the article attached to the OP! Edited now to avoid a furore
Boooo it was kind of funny because let’s be honest he’s made it up hasn’t he.

The guy is a grade A prick. Would anyone talk about him if he didn’t carry on this way. No because he’s just so so at Tennis.

Entertainer and a character. Love him or loathe him, he makes the sport more interesting. Would be a boring world without such characters.

Sadly he's both.

As with other geniuses in a variety of genres, there's a tortured soul in there somewhere, and probably a decent bloke too. Unfortunately he lets himself down a lot.

He'll probably end up as the modern Mansour Bahrami, if he wants to last that long.

Just like when Nastase and Johnny Mac were playing ... so many people appalled by their behaviour, but never an empty seat in the stands. Going Thursday - hope to see him, along with Draper or Emma.

I don't go up to their face in their 9-5 and start clapping when they're scanning s*** at a supermarket. They have no right to do that so why does it keep happening?" - that’s not entertaining that’s vile. These people pay his wages.
Also he’s admitted to spitting towards a spectator. How can that be entertaining.

Entertainment comes in many forms.

He wasn’t trying to be entertaining though he was being obnoxious and I’m sure the person he spat at wasnt amused.
C'mon, firstly he didn't spit at him, he spat on the court towards him, as if to say 'fuck you' - & rightly so in my opinion, as the guy (or gal) was obviously slagging him off throughout the match. I play tennis, It isn't quite as genteel as you may think (maybe you're a player too?) .. it's v competitive, and full of emotion. Embrace it ... by way of amusement, a mate of mine who loved the footy banter (a Chelsea Headhunter actually) suggested they should have ends at tennis - like at football - he had a point. He also loved folk music by the way ;).

Love him or loathe him nut case or entertainer I don’t know but he’s just played probably the best tennis match of his life to beat the 4th seed Greek who’s name I cannot pronounce. 🤣

Let’s go bad boy Nick. 👍
Glad he won that, Tippy Taps is the biggest cheating knobhead in the sport.

For all that he has some good tennis in him, Kyrgios is cynically unsporting and thoroughly dislikeable. I was disappointed that so much of the crowd applauded his bad boy tactics.

The crowds applauded McEnroe in his day he was an entertainer as well as being a brat but one hell of a tennis player.
And kyrgios reminds me of McEnroe and the fans (granted not the majority) loved to see him entertain.

Not a big tennis fan but dipped in at 1 set each to see what all the fuss is about. I was glued, it was box office. Question for anyone in the know, the under arm serve, never seen that before at the top level, is it a ploy often used and is it in line with etiquette?

He’s become a parody of himself.

No body would talk about No. 29 in the world if he didn’t act like a spoilt 13 year old.

Perfectly legal and more players (including Andy Murray) have started trying it since Kygrios did it. However definitely a feeling that it is unsportsmanlike… a little like the ‘Mankad’ in cricket - within the rules but frowned upon.

An entertainer and thank God! Sport these days is full of boring, vanilla dullards whose names I never remember. Bring back the characters.

Connors, McEnroe and Nastase brought a great deal to tennis and probably helped make it the box office it is today. Good luck to Nick as he brings some fun back into the game.

Tipytapy was ranked 4 I believe? 😉
I meant the top four or five players, your Nadals, Federers, Djokovics, Murrays...the big dogs who won't get bullied, not the seeds, Tippy Taps has never won anything and isn't a popular fella anyway and should have been defaulted for hitting the ball in to the crowd, coz dems da rulez.

Not illegal, Chang was the first I saw do it 30+ years ago, it used to be frowned upon, Hingis was next against Graf, but that was in France and she got booed to buggery for it.

The moaning and griping in tennis started with Connors, McEnroe, and Nastase, but the authorities, more or less, let them get away with it.
Footballers throughout the years have got away with it too.
There is too much effing and jeffing in sport. Don't get me wrong, I do a bit of it when watching The Mighty Pool, but would try to hold it back if I was a professional player.
Going back to tennis, Murray isn't backwards in coming forward when it comes to whingeing and whining, but Kyrgios is bordering on seriously deranged. It's such a shame because some of his point winning shots are absolutely outstanding. If he could channel all his effort on the tennis and cut out the antics, I think he would paste anybody in this years Wimbledon.

Yeah. But he doesn’t.

He’s even said in past interviews that he doesn’t train or give tennis the attention the other top players do. Bit of an enigma, clearly needs to feel under pressure and perceive an enemy during the match to perform.
He’s good entertainment, it would be good for him to back it up by winning a major tournament.

I dont like the guy at all, but find myself watching more of his matches than anyone else's because he's gaurenteed entertainment. That's why every tournament want him to play, he brings in good TV numbers. Look at the numbers on social media, on Wimbledon Twitter page, Rafa winning has 2,800 likes and 600 retweets, Kyrgios has 13,000 likes and 2,400 retweets. He brings in the numbers so tournaments and sponsors love him.

He did try to bully Nadal about 3 years back in a 5 setter at Wimbledon. He was taking the piss at Nadals mannerisms before each serve and complained about Nadals slow play. He even threw a couple of underarm serves in.
The crowd stuck behind Nadal in the main and as you say I've not seen him try it on as much against the higher ranked players since then.

Kyrgios is a fairly average player whose biggest weapon is intimidation of his opponents. As Tsitsipas said, he's a bully. The worst part of this is that he's a role model and kids will think it's good to copy him. It's tough for umpires to deal with and should be down to the tennis authorities. Yesterday he told the umpire that people came to see him play, not to see the umpire. Arrogant twit.

To play his best tennis he winds himself up more than the opposition, which McEnroe did as well. He was quick to apologise for a couple of shots that hit the net and trickled over and he did not deliberately aim to hit his opponent.
Big server but far more to his game than just serving and it is the players who score nearly all their points from Aces or impossible to return serves that do my head in.

I saw a tweet before that said if Kyrgios were a footballer he'd have played for QPR in 2012-13. Can't think of a better way to sum him up.

Not really seen much of him but just looked at a few clips on the BBC web site and seems like a real natural talent in the Paul Gascoigne mould.

Cocky for sure but tennis is littered with dull players so great to see someone that gets people excited.
