Northampton Town v Blackpool Official Matchday Thread 01.05.21

Think we’ll be too strong for them and they will be relegated on their own patch. 3-0 Pool.

I'd be happy with a point. 3 points would probably see us in the POs albeit not mathematically confirmed.

First goal is crucial. The Cobblers have to win. If they get it, they will try to park the bus and, for us, it will be Rochdale/Shrewsbury revisited.
If we score first, they will have to attack and we can hit them on the break.
I think Jerry Yates will get us on the way early in the piece and we will run out comfortable winners, maybe 3-0.

On other thread gone for 0 3. As they have to go for it there is no chance it will end 0 0. Think could be Yates 1st hatrick for us :)

Anything other than a win for the cobblers will virtually relegate them, barring a big turn around in goal difference on the last day, so given they have to go for it, it will leave spaces for us hit them on the break so see us running out comfortable 3-1 winners.

1-1. They’re fighting for their lives so it’ll be a much harder game than Sunderland

They are down at the bottom and play a direct style, if we have the same energy and movement as at Sunderland and Lincoln we'll win, if we don't and play like we did at Rochdale we won't.

If we haven’t learnt anything from the Rochdale and Shrewsbury games nor a sense of belief after the Sunderland game then nothing less than a win is acceptable to me, expectations high here in FY5 “BELIEVE” 0 - 2 to The Seasiders.

I’m going to have a lie down now, I don’t know where you glass half full types get the energy, I’m exhausted!

If Northampton still play a direct style , just thinking maybe bring big Marv into replace Thorniley , not that Thorniley not played well , more for Marv’s height ?

This will be just as tough as Sunderland, if not more so, they have to win to stay up. League position doesn't mean anything as the recent loss to Rochdale showed. I would go 5-3-2 again and pretty much the same team if Ward and Kai Kai are fit. Win this and depending on other results it may just be enough. It would be great if we had some breathing space for the last two games at home and could rotate the squad but we are Blackpool and it's never easy.

I suspect that Kai Kai and Ward will miss out tomorrow. Embleton will come in for the former, but it’s anybody’s guess who replaces the latter : Simms, and change the shape, Stewart, and play another holding midfield player, or Mitchell , who has done quite well when asked ?

I think they will play and suspect it was just cramp, i do expect Stewart to come in, id like to see us play the same system as last time. Ward put in such an effort i think his legs just cramped up.

Ward had an achilles problem - I would be surprised if he plays. If it was just a kick on the achilles he might be back for next week - anything worse and we won't see him again this season.

2 - 0 to the Mighty, please. Could be a banana skin, fighting for their lives. As they need 3 points, they have to come at us, should leave opportunities for goals.

I hope we go for it. They need points more than we do and we're a better team. They can't simply sit in, so I think my team talk would be.

"Right, if you look at all complacent, Colin will fuck you over at half time, but other than that, go and get at them, what is to be fear? We're better than them, go and show that. Go and get at them. If we concede, heads up, we'll score three for every one they get and if we lose, it's on me because I've misjudged them, which I haven't. Don't come back in here if you haven't had 15 shots per half"

Gaz, be a dear and put something upbeat on the ghetto blaster"

Press high up on them for the whole match. We always play better when we do and also look more like scoring

Our rivals would love to swap places with us right now. Prob need 3-4 pts from three games to be certain, two of the games against teams who are rock bottom of form table for last 10 games (one of whom is already relegated), and today's game against a team who over 44 games is in the bottom four.

It’s a must win game for them so they can’t sit back...they have to go for it....no parking the bus unless they score early of course...can’t see beyond us winning....🤣🤞

The Seasiders have often been generous to those in the relegation zone, while thrashing the top teams, but today we'll set that tradition aside. We'll see a ruthless dissection of a struggling team. As someone else said, "They are there for a reason."

4-0 to the Pool. 🍊 🍊 🍊 🍊

Not confident about this at all today. Exactly the sort of opponent we’ve been underperforming against all season.

They have beaten Ipswich, Shrewsbury, Oxford and Portsmouth recently, some conclusively.
Ipswich found themselves 2-down at H/T and Portsmouth 4-down. So they will come out fast and we need to be bang up for it from the whistle - another thing we can improve on.

Love to see us secure that playoff spot today, but I suspect we might have to wait.

Interesting to see what team/formation we have out today, we must of gotten great belief from the last match, although i do think this team is mentally strong and do not get too down with loses or carried away with wins, they are a professional bunch. When we add some magic to the team then we will have the next level, for now so pleasing to have a season like this with a bright future ahead and a great set up.

They will have to attack us and that is what we want.
They are not in the relegation zone by being fired up for games, so I'm going for a 3-0 win today, maybe more if we can upset them early.

I'll say it again.
Whilst this might be the most difficult of our remaining fixtures as nothing more than a win will keep them in League One, they're in that position for a reason.
If we wish to stake a claim for the Championship, we've got to win games like this.
I cant understand why Critchley bigs up our opponents every week....He makes it sound like we are playing Barcelona every week and like you say they are down there for a reason.

Getting the formation right is going to be critical. If we go with 4-4-2, I'll be worried and it will turn into a dogfight. If we go with a fluid 3-5-2, we should control the midfield and win comfortably. Also, by adopting the same formation as Sunderland, it would make the two possible enforced changes easy to do, Stewart for Ward and Embleton for KK. Both like for like...

Team: Maxwell, Turton, Ballard, Thorniley, Husband, Garbutt, Dougall, Robson, Kaikai, Simms, Yates

Subs: Moore, Gabriel, Ekpiteta, Mitchell, Anderson, Embleton, Holmes

Great to see Kaikai playing, gutted Ward is out, but Robson has been excellent the last 2 games and he must be chuffed to have a place in the team. Great to see Keshi on the bench too.
