o/t Computer Stuff kids today wouldn't get

Asteroids.

What a game with great graphics.🤣

Then Galaxian came along and things were never the same again.

Yep same as TangerineSeasider - loading games from an old cassettte tape. I had one on my Commodore 64 that took nearly 15 minutes to load. You’d wait that long then find out it hadn’t loaded and you had to start all over again. The joys of playing Siren City though eventually outweighed the frustration.

Typing GWBASIC at the DOS Prompt (or even WIN at the DOS prompt to start Windows or even the DOS Prompt!!)

And of course Seasiders.net mailing lists run by Steve Melrose (off the back of his works server at one time and then getting flooded by SPAM emails, sent by a disgruntled Gills fan as I recall)

Ohh forgot, the joy of the free disc on the front of Computer Weekly magazine which sometimes had “games” on them, and trying to unsubscribe from AOL

Could never afford a BBC Micro....had to settle for an Acorn Electron.

Could the Electron load the greatest game ever made? Talking ELITE here, complete with smuggling, space pirates and buying extra shields and missiles after docking with a spinning hexagon manually because you could never afford the auto-dock - sod it, I’m off to fire up the old BEEB B the b&w telly and ... bloody hell, anyone got a cassette player?

Some great computer games for the time they were made, broke a few joysticks playing Daley Thompson decathlon.

Couple of old favourites Manic Miner, Jet Set Willy, Sensible Soccer, Kick off soccer, Championship manager 93.
Loading a game what seemed hours then crashing after 10 minutes, also having to go round your mates to play on the computer rather than online. kids wont get that.

My mate blew up his Spectrum 48K after pouring water on the rubber buttons in an attempt to reduce friction to make faster times on Daley Thompson's Decathlon.

Thinking about the windows xp days, as a kid I got such much entertainment out of the games on that os, especially the pinball one, and solitaire.

Only if you were driving! I had the onorous task of pressing fire every few minutes.

The one I never got was Defender, all credit to those who did. My scores were based on whatever was on screen at the time I pressed Smartbomb.

I was at Bispham College in 1982/83. The Refectory had two machines, Lunar Command which was OK and another one that had seven levels, might have been called Astroblaster, that was a great game. There was about 3-4 lads on site who could do all 7 levels, and respectfully hushed crowds would form whenever they were in play.

Over in the Student Union, Missile Command and I think Galaxian as well.

I can’t link it for some reason but there’s a 15 minute video on YouTube of someone playing Siren City, top nostalgia.
Another favourite old arcade machine was that early racing game where you had an overhead view of the track, seem to remember they had one in the hotel when we went to Rimini in 81 was it? We spent many happy hour on it.

Talking of dial up. Ringing your mate on home phone obviously (as didn't have a mobile in them days ) to meet up for a beer... only to find mate on Internet and line constantly engaged!!

Revenge of the Mutant Camels

Wrote my first Basic programme in 1970, Dad put it on cards at work and ran it.

Apricot "portable" computers at work used for training

Commodore 64, cost me £199 at Boots in Hounslow

I play piano and had a very quick, but soft, index and middle finger alternating technique that used to wind my mate up something rotten who was furiously bashing away at those rubbery keys to within an inch of their life. Ha ha ha.

Hmm don't remember that driving game. It was bad enough losing to you at table tennis

The frustration when this happened and the choice language that often occurred...
Like the ‘disaster’ of the internet going off for today’s youngsters!
