We’ve got damp coming through one of the walls in the bedroom, I’ve been told if you put kitchen foil on the wall then the wallpaper it will contain the damp? Anyone heard of this before?

I’m far from a diy”er but even I can manage this if it does the job albeit temporarily?

You need to ascertain what is causing the damp first. Is it penetrating, coming from outside, is it rising damp, or is it condensation.
Rising damp can only show about a max 1m from the ground floor. Penetrating may be several causes, but needs investigation & remeding first.
Condensation is purely water vapour in the air condensing on a cold surface. Heat & ventilation is key here..

Mix some bleach and water and it will wipe off most houses get a bit of damp.
When I paint wet areas like bathroom and kitchen walls I use outdoor paint and never get any damp.

Use a product called damp stop. It’s a really thick gloss like paint. We have a bit of flashing around the chimney that lets a bit of water in - this has cured it, albeit temporarily until I can get a reliable roofer out to repair.

You can actually buy tins of damp proof paint. Clean the damp off first with bleach then towel dry the problem wall then a coat or two of the damp proof paint (which stinks) will do the trick then paint over as normal
We had this done in one of the hotel bedrooms and it has reared its ugly head since
it is actually called Damp proof paint
Hope this helps

Thanks guys used the damp like paint stuff. I think the damp is coming from next doors gutter as I can see a lot of moss etc - I’m assuming that could cause it.

it was just the decorating shop that got us onto the tin foil scenario.

Yes if their gutter is full of moss and soil it will cause water to spill over and run down the walls as it has to escape somewhere and I’ve seen this actually happen
Hope the damp proof paint works
Also the foil on the wall before paper also works

Fix the gutters, if upstairs bedroom won't be rising damp, water getting through somewhere.

Yeah Hazi it’s next doors that is coming onto/into ours, going around tomorrow to inform them. Think the gutters just need cleaning out and hopefully that should help
