O/T Film 1917 - bit too nice?

Just watched this. What a brilliant piece of cinematography. All shot as one piece. Incredible.

Good story. Extremely engaging. Can't deny that. But I kept thinking the reality must have been far far worse than depicted. Maybe it was a quiet day.

I still loved the film. If you haven't seen it do.

Plan to go and watch it this week - no doubt after it's swept up at the Oscars, there'll be long queues! Our resident Barry Norman Curryman gave the first review of it, so he might comment?

It's quite dream like, rather than in your face gory. The objective was not to show the full horror of combat in close up, I suspect. There isn't a huge amount of fighting, it's more about being there, travelling through it, not knowing what is going to happen next. I really liked it, I thought it had the feel of the state of mind you can be in during intense experiences, a mindful quality, perhaps. A mate of mine was really disappointed, thought it was bland and dull. Different strokes.

Are there are any tearful bits in it? Sometimes even tough macho men like us get a lump in the throat and a tear in the eye. I need to be prepared for that. 😭

Like 'Dunkirk' it was based on a small sub-plot within an epic event. Superbly shot though and a much better film imo.
It will be interesting to see how it fares at the Oscars with zero american content.

Fabulous film, loved the cinematography of the ruined city at night, only thing I’m not sure of is how clean the trenches looked at the end, weren’t they horrendous with soldiers getting trench foot

Without spoiling it too much there was plenty of bits far from “too nice”

Granted you didn’t see people getting blown to bits but I thought it still highlighted the hell of the trenches and war in general

The scariest WW1 stuff is Dan Carlin's epic podcast series, honestly that'll give you frickin nightmares.
