O/T Hip replacement

I'm pencilled in for a hip replacement op on on 10th May [hopefully]. Just wondering if other posters have had this op and their thoughts, recovery time etc. By then I hope we've confirmed our place in the play offs.

Ballargh i had my right hip replaced.....4 days later crossed my legs and dislocated it 😫...... do NOT do that lol...... 9 weeks later had my left hip replaced....id say it took me 6 months to get back to normal after having both done.

I have had one and a half knees done and had it quite easy compared to a lot of others I know.
I pushed myself hard from early on through a bit of pain and the pain subsided quickly, whereas others I know didn't and had problems with prolonged pain and restricted movement for longer.

If the advice given post-surgery is to get up and about, then have a good go at it.

Good luck 🤗👍

Need my left one done but am too young so they have palmed me off with pain killers for another 12 months.

Good luck.
Mac i had mine done 6 years ago when i was 50.....i just insisted i was was in severe pain....mind you the x rays showed i had bone on bone rubbing away...so had them both replaced.

Mrs Jimbo has been fobbed off for about 4 years as she’s “too young” for the op. She can barely walk at times because of it but nobody seems to want to do anything apart from an injection every 6 months, which offers about a weeks mild relief.

Hope it goes well and you are able to get a good pre--season in so you can be back in time for 2021/22 in the Championship.
Where are you having it done?

No experience at all. But all the best for the op and hope it brings you a better quality of life 👍

Hi Insider, hoping to be fit for the 20/21 season, having it done at the Highfield Hospital, Rochdale.
I know it well, it's within limping distance of Spotland. 😃
I have a few friends at the gym (that I used to go to in the olden days) that have had a replacement and were back in action within a couple of months.

I had mine done three years ago at Wrightington. I had their top consultant do it as I wanted it done in a new way which is where they don't detach the muscle and operate from thd front a kind of micro surgery. Quicker recovery time , much less chance of dislocation.
However I am now lopsided as my new hip us about 1 /2 inch bigger than the left. The consultant says its the size it was before wear and tear and they will level me up when they eventually do the other side.
I am in no pain and walk without limping. However my hip looks and feels swollen, even 3 yrs on. I put it down to them stretching the ligaments by making the hip longer. Its slowly getting better.
Re the op. I had it with a spinal tap. Nothing to worry about there. No pain , nothing and no sore throat or after effects of the anaesthetic. I just told the anaesthetist that I didnt want to be awake and aware of what was happening. I dont know what sedative I was given but it worked!
You are sore for a week or two and then its a slowish process of walking further and further each day. Some recover quicker than others.
If you are used to the Monday morning pain after playing on a Saturday and a Sunday and general football knocks you will be fine.

Good to hear. Think I've one coming up as its creaking a bit but cant really afford the time off work, but going in for a sort out soon.
Hope you make a full recovery anyway.

My mum has had both hips done at Wrightington.
Not as painful as knee op, but longer recovery time.
Really need to be careful about not dislocating it in the first few months. You need to read up on it. There’s even a decent video on YouTube by a Dr explaining what you should / shouldn’t do (like cross your leg). Best to shuffle. Might need some cushions or a runner for bed to stop you lying on side. And you’re not meant to sit on anything lower than 18” - so that means chairs, sofa, car seats, toilets, everything should be measured or fixed with risers, cushions etc. Keep a tape measure handy. If you dislocate it, you can be in big trouble. Need to be v careful.

I know at least half a dozen guys here in Cambridge have had hip replacements and they recovered very quickly and all playing golf with a new zest for life. Seemingly the operation has come on leaps and bounds (excuse the pun) and isn’t as complicated as it used to be and the recovery time is much less. One guy who walked with bandy legs had a double hip replacement done on the same day and he’s now walking like a youngster and carrying his own clubs! So hopefully you'll be just fine

Had my left hip done at Wrightington june 2010 , was told by the porters that Brett Ormerod had just been operated on . They kept that quiet. I was in a lot of pain beforehand, and unable to sleep , that went virtually immediately. Hip still good , and able to walk perfectly. Apparently it helps if you have good muscle tone in your thigh , and make sure you don't neglect to exercise ( walk ) a lot after the OP. Good luck .

Is needing joints replacing hereditary?

My late mum has crippling arthritis in her 30's, two of my sister's have it need it, both feeling it from their mid thirties. So far, I'm feeling ok, but it does concern me that it could creep up.

Anyway, it's not about me, hopefully it's straightforward, you have s good recuperation and can get back to a pain free life.

Oi Ballargh.
Are you still going under the knife tomorrow?
Good luck if you are, I hope all goes well and in case you haven't heard we made the playoffs. 😉

Cheers Insider, yes Into The Highfield later today for the op [Monday}. Great that we're in the play-offs but I'll be a bag
of nerves, hope we make it.

Can I ask you when you first had hip problems gents? A few years back I had really bad swollen glands down there which caused my hips and thighs to seize up and they’ve never really relaxed since, I recently tried jogging to strengthen the muscle and maybe allow it to relax but it had the opposite effect. Got swollen glands again a few weeks ago and since then my hips have got a lot worse again, snapping every time I turn a corner. Not really sure what to do, but I would give my left nut just to feel my hips relax again (though not sure the science is there for that yet!)

Are these hip/knee replacements free or do they cost. Some may have caused early damage to joints so should pay full cost.
Aye ok, and how do you measure that? So if I've been a keen footballer, marathon runner and golfer whilst being a postman and worn my knees out, I should pay? What a strange comment on a thread someone has posted asking for advice.

To the OP, good luck with the op 👍

My mum & dad have both had replacements. My dad's had 2. The first was 20-odd years ago and the second far more recent (autumn 2019). The technology and recovery has come on a lot. What I can tell you is that once you're over the initial surgery etc...you'll really notice the difference. My dad's gone from someone who really couldn't walk distances without huge amounts of pain to now walking 6/7 miles per day, pain free. He's also talking about getting back on the golf course.

Good luck with it. 👍

You really need to have a X-ray and MRI, and talk to a specialist / consultant. The hospitals will be mainly interested in your X-rays. Your problem might be something else. Quite drastic having a hip replacement if there’s an easier fix.
