O/T - Prison sentences

Following today’s stabbings in Streatham and the fact the extremist who carried out the attack and was shot dead had been let out halfway through a 40 month prison sentence for terror offences begs the question as to why do we fanny about with giving a sentence at court for it to immediately be reduced by at least a third apart from the most serious offences.

Isnt it about time that if a judge sentences someone to 40 months in prison that they should serve 40 months? He may still have come out after that time and done the exact same thing or worse, but at least he’s would have serve his full term.

I realise the prison population is way over capacity, but hat shouldn’t put the public in danger. There are too many sentences dished out for petty but persistent offenders who would benefit from support not prison. There should be a number of offences that should carry heavier sentences and not be reduced in length. Terrorist offences, sexual abuse and child sexual abuse and exploitation, violent offences and burglary should all have to serve the full term.

The prisons are becoming dangerous places for prison guards and staff to work with over 10,000 assaults by prisoners on staff in England and Wales in 2018. Who in their right mind would want to do a job with those risks?

It is a mess and it needs a complete overhaul, you can’t have the tail wagging the dog.

The fact he was under surveillance speaks volumes. I think/hope the sentencing and early release policy will be getting some serious scrutiny now as the two most recent attacks of this nature were early releases.
What’s the point in sticking them in high security Belmarsh to then release them early without any confidence they are remotely reformed or non threatening.

They have just admitted that the removal of IPP sentencing was because the prisons couldn't cope with the amount of people in the system. That, surely, cannot be treason to set dangerous criminals free?

It is so obvious. Extend sentences for violent, terrorist, and sexual offences and anyone who is convicted serves a full term unless a parole board says they can come out a bit earlier. Have IPP sentencing so really dangerous offenders may never be released. Then stop locking up petty criminals and prolific offenders, often dependent on class A drugs and deal with the problem. There are far too many people in prison who just shouldn't be there and too many who should be in there a lot longer!!

The problem is that the probation service is completely fcuked, it was decimated by the Tories when they got rid of masses of trained probation officers and replaced them with a security company, truly shocking, all about money. Then the prisons are at breaking point, poor pay and conditions, high risk of assault and massive stress levels. It needs someone to take it in hand and do a complete overhaul. Lock up those who are a danger and release the petty criminals.
