O/T. Relocating gas and electric metres.

Anyone had experience of moving your gas and electric meters
I’m having a small extension done which will require both metres to be moved about 3 metres.
I’ve had one builder who has used his own spark and plumber to do the work across the road from me and he says it is all above board and a hell of a lot cheaper than using the gas and electric boards to do the work.
However on the flip side I have had 2 builders who have said they wouldn’t attempt to do it and suggested I get in touch with my provider which I have done but got no reply yet.

You have to go through your supplier. Doing it any other way could lead to problems later on with certificates etc

Provided the sparky and gas engineer are properly qualified, it shouldn't be a problem, they're not going to risk their livelihoods by undertaking work they're not permitted to do.

Had it done recently, an electrician absolutely CAN NOT legally move your meter, they can end up going to prison, fact, only the network operator can shift it more than a metre, not the supplier, so Electricity North West, and it costs more than it should, over a grand if I remember.

That's right. You contact the supplier who will sort it out.

Thanks for the responses and apologies if this post appears again.
Spookily enough, just as I posted this the builder called round and explained it
The guy who does it works for Cadent so all work is above board, entered on a database and officially passed.
Must do it as a kind of foreigner I assume but it saves money.

When you say he does it as a foreigner, it sounds like it will not be authorised or certified by the network operator. I personally wouldn't risk it on that basis as you could be liable if anything goes wrong.

Still can't do your electric though?

If you want to play safe go through your supplier even though they charge about £250,000 it hurts the old wallet but it's for the best.

Can’t advise beyond one point and that is if you use someone not empowered ( note the pun) to do it and something goes wrong as a result of a fault with either the gas or electric you will find your house and contents insurance were you to make a claim would no doubt 100% be rejected which would be potentially a lot more expense for you.
Don’t believe for one moment that Insurance Companies would be sympathetic and trying to recover it from the non compliant installer, well good luck with that.
Better safer than sorry.

To be fair apparently it's a piece of piss job for any competent electrician, it's only illegal because it's not your property to move.

I got chapter and verse on all this from varies trades when we shifted ours.
