What do you do if you love your job, love the place you work, have great work colleagues but an utter ****** (use whichever expletive you fancy) for a boss who you can't get on with and is actually making the job a whole lot more unenjoyable than it should be?

Try and understand why he behaves like a **** , what drives and what motivates him, if this enables you to build a better relationship with him then that’s good. If not then the bloke really is a ****, but sure enough his boss will be watching him.

Make him a brew and put some laxatives in it and jam the toilet door or use up all the loo roll.
Then speak nicely to him and say everyone gets caught short at some time and offer to buy him new pants, and run him home as he is obviously unwell

Do you trust the people you work with enough to be able to talk openly with them without it going any further?

See if anyone else feels similar and what you could about it. Then have a team get together and explain to the manager what his/her behaviour's doing to you all.

If it doesn't change, then you gave them a chance. Assemble your evidence and what you tried to do about, and go over their head

As said above if a talk to him doesn’t improve things. Remember if the team is of the same mind as you there’s more of you to make his life a misery. Be cautious of people saying they will support you then wilting pathetically when needed.

What is he actually doing? Is he incompetent, crap at communication, crap at managing not just you or others, has he breached your organisations workplace policies or even the law??? Have any issues been raised with him infomally or formally as he may not be aware and do you have a union rep? Different issues may require different approaches or remedies.

Ask him why he’s such a knob, or ask him if he has a problem with
Yep, it happened to me a few years ago. I asked him if he had a problem with me, and he said not. Turned out that he'd been having marital issues and I just got in his way wrong place wrong time, he apologised.

Another guy about 10 years earlier was just a knob to everyone. Quite often they back off when you say you'll file a grievance against them with HR if they don't stop being a knob, especially these days. But as Sooty says, be careful that your colleagues don't run a mile and leave you to it. This particular guy got potted eventually, but that hasn't happened very often in my 41 years +.

Love how everyone assumes the boss is a bloke, I don’t think SB actually says.

If everyone under the boss feels the same way then collectively you can make them look incompetent which might draw attention to their performance.

Watch The Pact on BBC1 (started Monday, also on iplayer).

That may give you an idea.

Yep, I’d go down the communication route of asking him if he has any issues with you or your work. See what comes of that and go from there. But fight your corner if he starts chatting sh*te and tell him how you feel !

Just say, 'I feel sorry for your wife/girl friend/boy friend.'
He'll say 'Why', you say 'Because your a 'C***/T***, useless git/ choose your own.
You might get sacked, but you'll feel better for it. 😉

do we work at the same place?! i have the worst manager in the country and its a battle between us everyday. Since he arrived 16 months ago 11 good lads have left which given we have a workforce of about 20 is pretty impressive. He has had 4 grievances against him that the directors found in his favour. However yesterday he got his comeuppance, i received an email from a director who had had a complaint from a customer with regards an underweight drum, we supply drums with a nett weight of 220 kgs yet the customer alleged the drum only weighed half this amount and given the product we make costs about £900 a drum they were not happy. They enclosed a copy of the drums date of manufacture and the weight. I did a little investigation and went to visit the director who had sent the email. On my way to see the directors the manager starts a long diatribe about how disgusting and embarrassing it was having to deal with the customer and how i needed to improve to avoid making my mistake again, this was in full earshot and vision of all the directors and office staff. Normally i would not of accepted this but in this instance i let him give it me both barrels, when he finished i just asked him to check the date of manufacture and he confirmed the 4th of may. I then reminded him that it was in fact him who had manufactured the batch that day and he himself that had made the error as i was on holiday and thus could not of been responsible. The look on his face was brilliant but more importantly the smile i got from the office girls as i left was an absolute joy!
