I was there having only returned from Italy hours earlier . And feeling ever so slightly “ tired and emotional “
What a sad contrast. From a wonderful cup final win on foreign soil to Ian Gore
I was in Talbot Sq that day with my mate to see the team attended the Town Hall reception. We got there late and didn't see the team arriving, but my absolute best memory from that day was John Craven hanging out of an upstairs window, trophy in his hand waving it to the crowd,. Jacket off - shirt unbuttoned - tie fastened round his head (Rambo style) obviously the big fella had sampled far toooooo much of the 'refreshment' provided by the Mayor

Even our press pictures were ropey back then... the only one you didn't get has a first name of Bobby...and he scored a great goal vs the W Wanderers at Burnden.Billy O'Rourke and Scull in the background of Kev Stonehouse pic

Yep, Bobby ThomsonIs it Bobby Thompson?
I used to stand in the South Paddock and do exactly the sameI used to sit in the west corner for reserve matches and everyone held there breath when the phone rang because it meant a goal had been scored in the first team match.
The guy came out to put the score up on the half time score board we all held our breath and a big cheer went up if we'd scored and a funeral silence if we were losing. Great days
Me too.I used to sit in the west corner for reserve matches and everyone held there breath when the phone rang because it meant a goal had been scored in the first team match.

It's a Jethro Tull song, written by Ian Anderson who was a genuine sand grown 'un. It was on their seminal album 'Living In The Past' released in 1971.
Up the Pool by Roy Harper
He is a City fan but used to love watching The Pool and sings of 'Matthews on the wing' elsewhere
Thanks for putting this up. Still remember. I was10. An amazing time to be a Pool supporter1953 from the gazette View attachment 25506View attachment 25507

Yes as we had just being relegated I went down to the town hall wondering how many fans would turn up. It was a magic Atmosphere celebrating a great Anglo Italian winI was in Talbot Sq that day with my mate to see the team attended the Town Hall reception. I was there with my dad whilst the first team were at Sunderland needing a win to get promoted back to Div 1. 1-0 up & then that bloody phone rangI used to sit in the west corner for reserve matches and everyone held there breath when the phone rang because it meant a goal had been scored in the first team match.

Brilliant pictures. Just look at the clothes in May, very formal, ties waistcoats, overcoats and stiff collars. A couple of years later came the Teenage revolution with your own money and you no longer had to dress like your parents and grandparents. At 15 I sported brothel creeper shoes, drainpipe trousers, luminous socks, bootlace ties, and a white sports coat, all in colour and set off with a quiff and a DA haircut from Fabians or Greaves' barbers. I'm now 82 and 11/12ths and I expect others on here even older than I did the same. Liberation but not for long
No nylon though. So no anoraks. You'd still have to hold out in an overcoat in winter.Brilliant pictures. Just look at the clothes in May, very formal, ties waistcoats, overcoats and stiff collars.
