Part of our history.

Ps. and slightly O/T but as I was trying to find an old picture of Raikes Hall stadium I somehow stumbled upon New Brighton (Wirral) Tower. In my 30-odd years I have never known about this now demolished rival to Blackpool's tower until today!
I stood right there next to the photographer when that was taken - he then shared it with me and somehow it ended up in the press

The New Brighton Tower was built 1898-1900, some 5-6 years after ours and was taller (173m) as against (158m).

Here's the team from the 77/78 season in front of the Kop with its roof.

That is a great read, probably worth a new thread on its own.

Fantastic but very sad read that. l remember it all too painfully like it was only yesterday!

I had a photo off the web that I wanted to post and it did the same thing. Took a screenshot of the photo and it allowed it, so I assumed it was a file size issue.

It was demolished after the end of WW1.
New Brighton Tower was neglected during WW1 and the owners couldn't afford the cost of renovation. Dismantling began in 1919. Blackpool Tower was also neglected to the point that it was somewhat rusty by the early 1920s. It was decided to replace much of the iron work and paint it in anti-rust, red-lead paint. Hence it's now famous colour.
