On one of the VHS highlights videos, the camera is following the play right to left....Briggsy appears for a split second on screen and takes out one of the forwards, full body smash. I'm surprised the poor sod didn't end up in hospital. He didn't see him coming and it was like being hit by a train.

I have fond memories of a game at Wigan in 1985, where we drew 1-1 thanks to a brilliant Eamonn O'Keefe goal. He ran from the halfway line and beat Tunks in style to send the Tangerine Army (seen in the top left pic) wild in the autumn sun. Colin Greenall, Nicky Law, Mike Conroy and Steve Hetzke are also some of the players on these pics; not forgotten.
I remember this game well, mainly due to the fact that hardly any bugger who lived in Wigan seemed to know that a football team existed outside of Wigan RLFC Central Park.

The 1986-87 team should've done better; on its day, it was unstoppable. We hit Swindon, Bristol Rovers and Port Vale for six; these 2 images are of our veteran defenders at Vale Park in what was a weird game. We might have been behind after they initially dominated but then we ran riot in the second half.

Here we see The Ginger Pele, Mike Davies, steaming in to a challenge with Skully Methven in the background. I shall never forget Ozzy raging at Davies for not playing in Paul Stewart for what would have been a seventh...

Maybe a lack of squad depth was to blame?. The forward line of Madden,Walwyn,Cunningham and Taylor for our 87/88 Centenary season should definitely done better than mid table.

Not the best of images, but I have this down as v Huddersfield 23/02/02. I thought this was the fixture for the opening of the North and West stands.

Wikipedia seems to differ!? Can anyone confirm one way or the other?

That Huddersfield game was definitely the first game in the new North and West. Ian Marshall scored for us and John O'Kane was outjumped by 5'5 Leon Knight at the far post for him to score the winner in the last minute. I think Wikipedia refers to the "official" opening which took place in the summer.

Was that the one where there was an evacuation drill and we all trouped down onto the pitch?

And we beat them 5-0 at The Dell, but still went down.
5-1. I was at a reserve game the same day and no one could believe the score line as it was being updated on the board by the steward with the white numbered tiles:.️1-⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽😀

One of my Top-5 away games was a 3-1 win at Middlesbrough on 11 Oct 86. They were flying, and we were building momentum. Paul Stewart and Mark Taylor were brilliant that day, and our defence held firm in what was a superb day in a VERY hostile ground.

In those days, the Gazette didn't bother to send a photographer to most away games, and this fantastic win only merited a few paragraphs.

Note Alex Dyer tracking back in the top right and lower pictures. How good was he? Brian Butler, Mike Walsh, Skully Methven and Nicky Law are also on these pictures; solid Seasiders that did their bit....

I was at that game. Very intimidating they even had to bring our coaches into the ground. Think Alan Mayes scored during an impressive loan spell & was shite when we signed him. Think they got revenge in an FA Cup tie later that season.

Agree about it being one of the legendary away games. Mentioned on here a few times. I was 16 and went on one of three supporters coaches. Shortly after kick off 50 of their lads came into the away end and ran at the Pool fans. They got put into the Paddock next to us, and along with hundreds of others spent most of the game threatening to climb back in with us. The coaches reversed into the ground behind the unused stand behind the goal for our own safety. I dont remember too many Pool having to walk outside to cars etc. Wouldn't of fancied that walk after our 3-1 win.

Alex Dyer got dogs abuse on the wing all game, but played a blinder. Went again a month later in the FA Cup, we took a few more but not many. I remember the Gazette quoted a brave 500 made the effort, and they said it was no surprise that there wasn't more bearing in mind the welcome received in the League a few weeks earlier. That game followed on from Middlesbrough rioting in Darlington the week before with multiple stabbings and dozens of arrests. A hairy place to visit back in the day.

I remember a lad with MFC tattooed on his head stood next to me.

I remember a bald lad with a red sweatshirt on, looked like Duncan Goodhew, he was one of the first in, and I knew when a few more began to follow him, it was looking dodgy. Saw some of the same faces on Revoe Park at the home game later that season.

it looks like that page is from the 'middlesbrough evening gazette', not the 'west lancashire evening gazette'. slightly ironic considering there's not too many gazettes about.

however, it's possible our gazette didn't send tony quested and paid a local agency for a report and pics, as was the norm back then.

First game back in the top league . Lost 3-0 , went on the special train from North Station.
Went on a coach. On way back just outside Huddersfield two Pool fans started fighting each other and the coach driver ejected them from the vehicle and told them to walk home. Crikey is it really 52 years ago ?!
