OT : Local Golf Courses

Probably value for money is Knott End,it’s in excellent condition and financially is in a very good condition, owning the course and the land surrounding it they are in a fare better position than most

As a rule of thumb, I would join where I thought it will be enjoyable, do not listen to someone off here with a chip on his shoulder, which is affecting his elbow. 😂😂😂

Not a golfer but when I lived in Troon in the early 90s a friend came up from England for a few days and got a day ticket for the municipal course. Apparently it was a good course - £17 for the day back then.

Calm down... he only said he’d heard that they were struggling.. I heard North Shore was struggling big time and they were close to being in trouble. ??? The pro left and members have left en masse.
I believe the pro didn’t leave of his own volition, he wanted to stay. Good guy sadly missed.

A great pro but couldnt come to an agreement with the club, retainer plus other add ons were earning him plenty when others, like greenkeeper and secretary took a cut. Last time I spoke to him,he was glad to be out of it and enjoying his new roles, teaching and being an abassaddor of a golf travel firm.

Been at fleetwood for 30+ years and wouldn't really join anywhere else
Lowest annual fees on the Fylde coast I believe too plus you get all year round golf
Course is in great shape at the moment
Don't understand the comment about issues booking times..... Allembers can book 7 days in advance and its not normally full and competition on Saturdays are done on a Thursday night 10 days before.... Never had an issue with it

All depends whether you like to play links or parkland courses.
Parkland....
For the money they've spent on it Green Drive its very expensive seeing as it's only oper 7/8 months of the year.
Staining is a farmers field with some golf holes on it, as it matures it may get better.
Blackpool park (Stanley park) the only municipal golf course on the fylde that gives starters and casual golfer the chance to play at an affordable price.
Only problem, the clowncil are hell bent on taking it away from the Blackpool public 🤷‍♂️
Fairhaven, cost brewsters and long waiting list. Lovely course.
Poulton, 9 holer. Not played it for 30 years so don't really know what it's like nowadays.

Links......

Royal, great if you are a business man with loads of cash who is not interested in playing competition golf. If you join never leave as you'll never be able to rejoin!!
St Anne's Old links, (royal lytham wannabees) big fees long waiting list, far too penal for your average club golfer (quote members)
Fleetwood, for some reason very difficult for long standing members to book times. If you're a junior or new member though it's not a problem. Decent course.
North Shore, the only true links in Blackpool as they like to advertise themselves. The most pointless course on the fylde and have had somewhat of an exodus of players recently. Big open field where you can blast it anywhere.

Links/parkland

Knott end. Lovely course but out at the back of beyond, have heard they're experiencing financial difficulties at moment.

American holiday type.

Herons reach (de vere) Great if you want to talk about how big your house is, how fast and expensive your car is or how well your business is doing. No clubhouse and you'll have to fit in around the hotel guests if you want to play at the weekend.
Ha-ha. Probably quite accurate too.

No. I get that... The biggest issue I have is how bad some golf clubs are at communicating. It took a month to get a reply from one club, 2 weeks for another. 1 didn’t even bother!!!
Fleetwood to be fair, replied in 10 minutes!!!
Fancy naming them? I’m a life member to a W Yorkshire club but am considering applying now I live here. But which?

Yep. Fairhaven didn’t bother, Old Links took a month, both are full so obviously didn’t trouble themselves!!!!
Herons Reach is straight in and to be fair it’s a better course than people give credit for. They’re a funny set up though as they never publish prices on their website but I have the price info if you need it.

That’s what I thought. I’m on the waiting list there now, but will probably be March before I get in!!!

Could you post prices please.

Thanks for that. Fairhaven is my favourite on the coast. St Annes (obviously) is nearest but the layout (15holes) are subject to a prevailing wind that pushes all my drives into the rough. N Shore is looking weary but it’s still ok. “Royal” no chance, not even if I won the lottery! The Park is still a decent course and, for me, the easiest on the coast. Must have a day on Herons. I’m led to believe it’s less than a grand? Not considered the others. Appreciate the reply.

As an alternative to joining a specific club take a look at www.playmore.golf. For a subscription of £325 you get a designated number of points to use at 260 clubs nationwide including Poulton, Knott End, Staining and Herons Reach locally. Can be worth it financially if not looking to commit to playing on a regular basis. If you then decide to play more regularly more points may be purchased

Play more golf points are not particularly good value for money, and you only get 20 away points, and 80 home points. IE, Herons reach Sunday morning 8 points , (£28) . If your not a member of PMG or anywhere else and play with a full member, it will only set you back £20. however, if you play after 6pm on a weekday, it will cost you 2 points, so it does have some value.

Yes he’s organising a trip to Loch Lomond GC next year but way beyond my means!

I haven't played golf over there since my dad passed away 13 years ago, we used to love Old Links and Fairhaven, but we just played when we visited and I know they are expensive. You could always go into enemy territory and play Fulwood, that used to be a really nice parkland course unless it's changed?

@Stony Hill , played DD on Monday. In great nick at the moment. Really enjoyed it.
Glad you enjoyed it. Played the Captain’s Charity there, few weeks ago and it was spot on. The ‘greens staff’ do a great job. I miss the ‘roll ups’ - you just turn up and your name goes in the draw. Great way to meet people. I haven’t come across anything like it over here.
Where you having pre-game pint this season?

The Armfield Club will be the venue of choice.

We played garstang last week, first time for about 12 years, course was in cracking condition but fkin ell, they need to crack down a bit on dress code, first hole walking down a buggie came out the trees from the 9th, no tops on, sports shorts and trainers, large groups of what looked like prestons finest dressed the same all over the course

My mates a member at pleasington so play it often, they have done a lot of work over winter, played the other week and was in decent nick
Used to play in the Pleasington Antlers and Pleasington Stag back in the 70/80’s, lovely course

Anyone know what’s happening at Blackpool Park? Last I heard the company developing the part of the course near the hospital have gone missing.
Good course that I hoped would have been protected by a preservation order being a Mackenzie course

They haven't gone missing, it's just that they haven't amassed any money to develop the area they want to.
The clowncil are still letting them run the golf course (badly) rent free.
If only there was someone to invest and tend to the course properly then the Park could get back to somewhere near to how it was in the '80's

The council didn't have a problem with the course when it was propping up failed ventures like the Zoo and the Sandcastle (both sold on to people who knew how to run a business properly)
Get someone in at the Park (the Ian Woosnam business was interested) to run it properly and the council could still reap a decent rent from the course.

It isnt really rocket science but the council seem hell bent on selling the towns silver.
Once it's gone it's gone.
What do they sell next?
