Been reading about the Redskins pressure to change their name and understand why,but not sure that its an insult to indigenous Americans given its a much loved sporting institution.
I guess locally there will be renewed concerns over Uncle Toms Cabin but just wondering where collectively the world is going with this

Wonder if the Cleveland Indians baseball team be thinking the same?
 
Difficult one. Again erasing history. But if it's the right thing to do and everyone is in agreement then so be it.

I think renames for all clubs with the prefix "Reds" should be changed. "Red Devils", "The Red Men"..........LOL!
 
I went to see the 49ers win there last October and they were brilliant home fans that are used to legions of away fans invading their stadium. When I told the bloke next to me that The Guardian calls them Washington Professional Football Team he thought it was hilarious....

I think redskins are considered more derogatory whereas Indians could be framed as well-intentioned. Similar to the chiefs and the braves. Though I imagine aspects of those organizations like the tomahawk chop celebration aren't going to survive this recontextualization.
 
I watched a US Cavalry/cowboy and indian film a couple of days ago and for the first time I saw a viewers warning before it started....
 
I startyed loosing interest in the sport 2 or 3 years ago..........................I don't think I'll bother even bother looking at the results now.
 
Many US sports names seem stupid anyway.
Why dont they just make them all more sensible.
I understand they cant have simple united City and Towns like we do in football but they need to find a compromise and not think that giving teams a 'jazzy' name is so important.

What about Washington Wetwipes?
Denver Dullards etc
Will the yanks stop watching in their teams dont have such silly names? 😙

It's the suffix that's important. That's the franchise. The city is irrelevant. Look at the Raiders.

When I lived in America, I had conversations with a few sports oriented people Who couldn’t understand the use of the term ‘United’ for a sports team.
They used to ask which team isn’t united?

Yeah i suppose that is the concept that is alien to many of us with regards to US sport. The fact Its a franchise rather than a competive league structure. At least the raiders only moved to vegas rather than St Louis👍.
 
At least our nicknames are either a geographical confirmation or a fruit. No problem there, unless a group of shadists start to insist that all varieties of Orange should be recognised under one Orange banner.

Like the Bradford Bulls or Lancashire Lightening, I suppose.
 
Probably use an animal native to Washington State.

"White-tailed deer and mule deer, as well as black bears and mountain goats, are also found in Washington. Predators include the cougar (or mountain lion), Canada lynx, coyote, and red fox. Mammals such as the orca and harbor seal are found in coastal waters."

You can rule out black bears, for obvious reasons.
White-tailed deer sounds like a race thing again.
Cougars has a different meaning.
Lynx is a deodorant.
Orca will upset the many overweight Americans.

Not easy this.

Bulls are mainly powerful black beasts that are often slaughtered so the name likely has racist connotations. It really should be changed!
The other sounds like a fkin weather forecast. Who is the stadium announcer Fred Talbot?

There’s no argument. Plenty of light hearted banter.
I happen to agree with this one. It’s clearly a racial thing and they’ve been thinking about changing their name for years. Recent events have just brought it to a head.
So now they will go with either: Red Wolves, Red Tails or Warriors.
