Our Nine Injuries

Sean McKinley's article lists all of our injured players and their prognosis. It's an astonishing read.

Questions that arise for me are:

- Is it normal for a club to have this many injuries?

- Have we hired injury-prone players in the hope they'll make a full recovery?

- Are we just unlucky?

Injuries happen. Only a few concern me. Main concern is stewart that I think was born injured and I think, unless he makes some kind of miraculous turnaround long term recovery, we would do well do get rid of. Husband seems to be injured too often along with Gabriel as well. Anderson also getting to be a bit of a sicknote... the rest I think are one-offs like I say, injuries happen.

However there does seem to be a few stress fractures. I know SG has been upgraded tremendously but could it be a problem with the pitches/facilities there still?

Add Garbutt to that list

So, Stewart, Husband, Gabriel, Anderson and Garbutt have been mentioned so far as long-term injury risks.

I'd agree with all of those except Gabriel - he's young and, I hope, can heal from injuries better than some of the older ones. Also improved training from Appleton and the physio team could prevent future injuries. There's a lot of hope involved in that, I know, but I can't give up on Gabriel yet.

I wouldn't be surprised if the relic pitches from the Oyston era were causing injuries. But again, I'm hopeful they're much improved now.

Husband has 33 and 36 appearances in the last 2 seasons. Not too shabby. Was a great free signing in my opinion.

I think its partly the modern game perhaps? Its very high intensity and players pick up injuries everywhere, and only play if fully fit, no playing with a knock, as of old.
I'm hoping it's the last of his hamstring injuries if he's had an op to fix it now, but we'll see. Usually seems to miss time just before the start of the season and then after January depending on his workload.

You were one of them and there was quite a few others asking if it was the best idea to name an unchanged line up at Hartlepool when the teamsheet came out before a cold midday kick of. After playing on through Xmas/NY when everyone else had their covid holiday. And sure enough the snipers were out for him and Keshi before 30 mins and we lost both for months. So I wonder if risk management on injuries is maybe the best it could be at times considering they all seemed to be wired up, tracked and monitored nowadays. Is there anyone just saying 'he looks like he could do with a rest?'.

Indeed i was. But generally speaking Critch rotated pretty well and was vocal about protecting players from heavy workloads as much as possible.

He tried to but I was never sure of the gains of that policy and whether it was disrupting the wrong players at the wrong time or not. Great for keeping everyone on board and at a level where they could come in and do a job for you though. I think that's what got the 61 points.

Maxwell constantly picking up injuries as well...

We need to have more of Connolly's (and earlier Turton) in our squad, always available, and can play in different positions.
Absolutely VITAL for a team!

Out of interest, how do you 'get rid of' a player? Would you have to pay him off?

If his contract isn't finished then yeah I think it would be a pay out, in which case the club may as well keep him on the off chance he's fit for 15mins a year.

Or they could terminate by mutual consent and that would mean no pay out.

I was more meaning to run his contract down and not renew it as there's just not enough games in him in a season.

Stewart has 30 appearances in his 18 months here. Signed january 2021. Its not great, and only 14 last season, but not a total waste of money like Nuttall and Lubala. Helped us get promoted. Might get 20 games from this season, you never know. If Jamaica have a tournament that might get him back fit again!

Wasn't Lubala top scorer pre-season?

Yes but i wouldn't put too much store on that. He doesn't look Championship level to me, might be wrong, time will tell. Suspect he'll go out on loan. Has the club even forgiven him for not beong up front?

Gabriel, Tharme, Husband and Keogh should be back soon.

So that should take it down to 5.

Keogh still struggling but Gabriel and Husband both making good progress - obviously Beesley and Anderson out for a while and not sure about the rest.

Remember last season Madine did not get a squad place till he proved his fitness. Think 2 or 3 of our injured may not get a squad place till fully fit and spare places might instead go to deadline day signings if quality players become available.
