Oxford United v Blackpool Official Matchnight Thread 18.04.21

3-1 pool , Yates to score first, been doing it all season but I’ve got a good feeling, the last time it came in was posh & got £405 off a £5 bet so fingers crossed although I don’t care about losing the bet obviously if we get a good result

Maxwell
Turton Ballard Thorniley Garbutt
Mitchell Stewart Dougall Anderson
Simms Yates

not personally a fan of a Stewart, Dougall midfield partnership but needs must

Will the 1st leg be live on TV?
In the Radio Times it just says 'one of the play-off matches' for Tuesday.
Which one, are both games on at the same time?
BTW I have Sky Sports etc.

Just watched the away game where we beat them 2-0, garbutt and kaikai's set pieces were crucial but we really bossed them , their comms were bricking themselves about Garbutts set pieces , they rated him from his loan there . Put my nerves to rest a bit

I noticed that they started using goal line technology for all play off games from 2018. Haven’t seen anything about it for this season but, presumably, they will be using it

I dreamt last night we won 3-0. Yates pen for the 3rd.
Had that weird moment for a few seconds when I woke up thinking it was real.

Sorry to spoil the good vibes and eternal optimism but I've got real bad feelings about playing Oxford. Of all the teams it was possible for us to play these were the ones I really wanted to avoid. They are a very well sorted side on an extremely good run, scoring for fun and playing teams off the park. As well as being beaten finalists last year.
At our best I think we could do them but we've seen many times this season we have spells in virtually every game where we are off the boil, not competing and giving the ball away far too easy. A team like Oxford can damage us quickly and ruthlessly. 3 - 1 Oxford first leg, we score 1st and have plenty of chances to get another but wilt under pressure early 2nd half to go behind and concede a late goal.

2nd leg could be totally different and hopefully and we hammer them 3 - 0.

If it's not to be this season next season will be brilliant because we will be the 12 man and we will go up as champions.

p.s my predictions for the Pool are always abysmal and I rarely ever bet on them to win as I am a very very poor gambler.

Anyone but Lincoln in The semis for me. We can probably do them in the final when they get overawed but over two games I’m not feeling it. We can do Oxford.

According to my Patent Foolproof Scientific Score Prediction Methodology* Blackpool will draw 1 - 1 in the away leg but run out 3 - 1 winners at home to take the tie to a 4 - 2 aggregate.

*I kick a tennis ball and if it goes up in the air and Big Lab catches it cleanly then a sequence begins, if the next ball is caught that is a goal, this is repeated till either he fails to catch or I fail to get any lift on the ball and that sequence ends. Process is repeated, if Blackpool away they have the second sequence, home then the first, and this was the result of this mornings test.

Of course if the result isn’t favourable to Blackpool then the test is scrapped and Big Lab gets no biscuit!

I don't get this being wary of them because 'they're on a good run'. What, as opposed to winning four on the trot without conceding a goal, including one game away to a play off rival? Oxford are good - you don't finish sixth if you're not. But they're not without deficiencies themselves, which clearly the top sides have been able to exploit regularly this season judging by their record against them.

Dave, it's on Sky Sports Football (Ch403) from 5.30pm on Tuesday. Same channel on Friday from 7pm for the second leg.

I've heard that this system is now used worldwide to determine the outcome of major sports events.

The Oxford Mail reports that everyone who applied for tickets has got them. That's pretty poor support from them.

Two years ago I said Oxford were the best team I had seen at Bloomfield Road in years.

That is not the same team we will be facing in the play offs, and we have put the Oxford away hoodoo to bed by outclassing them at their place.

If we work hard and turn up for both legs I am confident that we have got this.

Anyone else going through waves of feeling fairly confident, then next minute immensely nervous, then a mixture of the two? I’ve been listening to a lot of podcasts with the various fans on, each teams fans seems to fear us. Oxford have scored 3+ goals over 10 times this season, but never against a side in the top 10. They sound fairly confident, as they should on the back of 6-1 and 4-0 victories. But by the sound of it their playing of the season Long, the right back, is out with a hamstring issue and Henry who they play centre mid could be a doubt. Also interesting to hear that they started the season with Gorrin the deepest of a midfield 3, he got injured and they started playing Cameron Branagan there who’s a very good player but more of an attacking player, I thought anyway. So it’s an attacking set up, they’ve got a good defence but they do concede.

Regardless of what happens, it’s important to remind ourselves how far we’ve come. Our last playoff campaign I remember being in the pub for the Luton away game, I was half watching and couldn’t even muster as much as a fist pump when we scored. I’m not a nervous wreck. But I love it.

Up the pool!!!
