Phil Neville

"Phil Neville is to leave his role as England Women's manager next summer. The former Manchester United defender led the Lionesses to a fourth-placed finish at the World Cup last summer."

For all the Neville brothers talk a good game, neither could really cut it at management.

Gary Neville took a massive risk - perhaps that should be opportunity or challenge - in taking on a massive football club in decline in a foreign land without being able to speak the lingo and limited experience.

I don't want to come across as a defender of all things Neville but I think people are now being a bit harsh on Phil now, in the same way that they were overhyping his achievements at the start of his tenure and touting him for big jobs in the mens game on the back of a few meaningless victories against limited opposition.

I think it's fair to say that Phil's record is not dissimilar to that of Gareth Southgate in that he has won most of the matches he was expected to win and failed to win most of those he was expected to lose.

That is certainly the case if we consider major championships where they both just won the matches they were expected to win yet Phil gets slaughtered and Southgate is suddenly a genius.

I know that there are fine lines in all walks of life but I can't help but feel that if the Americans had suffered a shock defeat in the quarter finals of the womens world cup that folk might be calling for Phil to be knighted rather than ridiculing him.

Good managers maximise the talent of their squad through good man or woman management and coaching, when the big matches come their teams play up to their maximum potential and are not fearful, intimidated or overawed.

I n this country the last international manager who exhibited those qualities was Terry Venables and it was a great shame he resigned after the Euros in `96. Also a few at club level too like Clough Ferguson and Paisley .Southgate and Phil Neville look no better than ordinary managers and their teams results when the big matches come will continue to underline that with Southgate probably slightly ahead of Neville.

Maybe it's just me but I feel he hasn't got enough raw talent available to beat the top women's sides in the world right now. That would apply whoever managed the side or how good they were, it may be different in the future as we do have some exciting young talent coming through.

I also believe that the players available to him are just not good enough to be the best. Whenever they play a decent side such as USA and the Netherlands they are simply behind in quality and technique. Replacing Neville will make no difference.

True but there's a national female coach who they reckon was nailed on for the job,who had a better idea of younger up and coming players.
I always felt they wanted a name for the job and PN didn't have any managerial experience either,so for me he was destined to fail.

What big match did Venables win? One against an average Dutch team? Didn't beat Spain or Germany. Southgate has beaten Spain in Spain.

A bit harsh on Southgate that 50s . . . I was disappointed when he was given the job but think he's done a decent job so far.

Has the potential to be the best England manager since Bobby Robson . . . possibly there already.

Venables in a home tournament against mediocre opposition...we rode our luck a bit and were second best against Spain in honesty. I was gutted we got knocked out but I think you give Venables too much credit

We came within an inch of Gazza`s toe of beating the tournament winners Germany in the semi final, were very unlucky to lose and only went out on penalties when Southgate missed one after the first 5 had all scored .

We played superbly when beating Holland 4-1 or 4-2 earlier in the tournament and I`ve seen players like Shearer and Sheringham since say they felt England were about to really go places at that time under Venables and were very disappointed when he left, as I was at that time.

I`m inclined to think they knew what they were talking about.

Southgate did all right in the WC but let`s be honest we got a very soft draw, lost to Belgium and when we finally came up against a fairly good team in Croatia we went out pretty tamely.Ok we did have a good win in Spain later but then when we got to the tournament of the last four last four we went out with a feeble performance.

As I said earlier it`s particularly in the really big matches that you find out how good your manager is.If you go out to a better team, or with no luck as happened in 1996 ,despite playing your best you can live with that but that`s not what`s happened under Southgate. We underperformed in the two biggest games that he has been in charge.

I thought this was about the younger Neville? 😁

tbf i thought Venables was a very decent coach who played football. Dont forget he followed a very poor showing from GT
I think Southgate is doing well. Smart guy, Fresh ideas. I would say he is the best England manager for a long time. (probably since hoddle who was a bit unlucky).
He is an inexperienced manager learning the ropes. Ive certainly been impressed. Dont forget before him a lot of more experienced ones didnt do great including big name/money imports like Sven & Fabio.

Im just so glad Big Sam got hoofed.

As for Phillip Nev meh Its womens football.

Southgate is head & shoulders above on a totally different level.
